I want to put bluntly that life is not fair and sometimes people even die without ever having got their way in this world. It's just not fair. God and his creation of the rules of operation and their consequences in this world is not fair. I have this thought a lot myself and I'm not the only person. Even after we die, it doesn't end for eternity and we are still bound to the rule and will of this celestial king. We can never seem to avoid it. We only have the two choices for eternity given for us.

I'm in a kind of heated mood typing this right now. It can be hard to type sometimes. I don't want to hear about how I should "get right" in this thread right now.

Thank you.

I got what I wanted a few times in life. Then I cared less about it. Or I wanted more. Or I wanted something else. Getting what you want is not what it's cracked up to be.

Why do some of us die without ever getting what we want?
  1. That is not why we were created.
  2. Because of the Fall, humanity is operating under less-than-optimal conditions.
  3. Because of #2, our dreams/goals/desires aren't always compatible with our personal best interests.
Here is what the Bible promises believers,

Jesus said,
"If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you." John 15:7 NKJV

and

Paul wrote,
"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose." Romans 8:28 NKJV

That is the best that one can expect in this life, under these circumstances.
I don't want to hear about how I should "get right" in this thread right now.
Then, do not complain about the consequences of such disregard.

God is not our Jeanie in a bottle. If life were fair all of us would burn in hell for eternity. God created us for Him, not visa versa. Many times if we got what we wanted we'd be worse off 'cause we are finite, ignorant, immature, and foolishly sighted; God infinite sighted. Rest upon Matthew 11:28-29 and Proverbs 3:5-6. Life is NOT supposed to be about things and what we want. It is about relationships, starting first with ours with God. The kind of love God wants us to feel and give is described in 1 Cor 13-https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+Corinthians+13&version=NIV. This shows us that life is not about us but rather us unselfishly giving to and caring for others.

I figured I would ask, what do you want that you've not been given?

John 12:25

Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

John 15:19

If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

James 4:4

Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

1 John 2:15

Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

1 Corinthians 4:11

Even unto this present hour we both hunger, and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwelling place; 12 And labor, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it: 13 Being defamed, we entreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the off scouring of all things unto this day. 14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you."

Matthew 5:3

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. 6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. 10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

Luke 6:20

“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. 23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets. 24 “But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. 25 Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. 26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.

2 Corinthians 12:10

That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

Matthew 10:22

You will be hated by everyone because of Me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.

Philippians 1:21

For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith

1 Thessalonians 3:7

Therefore, brothers and sisters, in all our distress and persecution we were encouraged about you because of your faith. 8 For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.

I have gotten what I wanted, but I was not right for it.

And then I trusted in Jesus, and now I am getting better than what I have wanted and prayed for.

So, it's not fair how Jesus gives us more than we deserve, but it is good :)

You've answered your own question. It's not much consolation, but the truth is not obliged to be consoling.

It's easy to look around and see what we don't have and what we wish we had. There's always somebody who we think has it better than us. "Why can't I be like that guy?"

The Bible is full of stories about people who had those same thoughts.

What always helps me when I'm feeling like that is to count blessings. Every day that I wake up is a blessing. And every good thing that I have is what God gave me. If I had nothing at all, I'd still have family, friends and my very life. Each day is another opportunity to turn my life in a better direction. The creation itself is a blessing. A beautiful sunset, a giant hanging moon, a bunch of sparrows fighting over a crust of bread and singing with joy and flitting about without a care in the world. Every breath I take, the clothes on my back, the shoes on my feet, the food that I eat, the water I drink.

Every time I count my blessings and realize that they're all gifts from God, it changes my whole outlook. There are too many to count. It's always a fun exercise and I do it every time I start to feel down and it always changes me.

For someone who says he does not know whether there is a God this is an interesting thing to say.

The problem is he does not believe what he has said.
If he did then he would be seeking to follow that celestial king and would not have the fear of what will or will not happen in this life or the next.

Thank you.

I know the feeling.

It is helpful to accept the hand of Providence even when it seems unfair. (I have my own issues where it seems like I got the short end of the stick compared to others in my family. etc. as far as blessings and success goes)

If you really scrutinize your life you can find some occasions where things worked out better than they should have. (God orchestrated things to help you).

As far as the people who died to young etc. I don not believe they are worse off, but better off. I for one do not believe that God would cause a baby to die without giving it a chance to go to heaven etc. He is much more merciful and just than any human! I actually believe those people who died that way actually were removed early from a life of temptation and potential damnation.

Maybe that scenario you envisioned is not the case at all. Maybe we're simply "ruled" by cause & effect, and we suffer the effects of the causes we make, and suffer because of desire. The external circumstances wouldn't matter if we were at peace and happy in ourselves.

You are right and there have been times where I felt things worked out one way or another.

I was just in a stressed mood when I wrote my OP.

What do YOU want?

Life is a roller coaster...once you get to the top of the hills, throw your hands up in the air going and enjoy the ride!
