Im new here. I read some threads about the unforgivable sin. In the past I struggled with this. But not as much as I do now. I think I did it and don't know what to do.
This comes up frequently and I just commented on something that touches on what you have written today in another post. Below you will find what was posted by me. However, let me first say very clearly...
The only unforgivable sin is the sin of apostasy - renouncing Christ.

Blasphemy and Apostasy are often confused and people overlap the Scriptural truths about both.

Blasphemy

Blasphemy has to be one of the most misunderstood things in Scripture in my view. Many consider blasphemy one thing and one thing only, suicide. I would give anything to understand where that originated. No person has been able to show me Scripture, which supports this view.

The word “blasphemy” appears fourteen times in the King James Bible, which is the text used to trace words back to their original meaning in the Hebrew or Greek Language. Of those, fourteen times it appears twice in the Old Testament and twelve times in the New Testament. The definition for the two times it appears in the Old Testament is the same. The definition for the twelve times it appears in the New Testament is the same, with one exception; Matthew 26:65, which is an account of the same scene with Jesus and this text simply adds more layers to the definition.

Blasphemy against God can be one of the most serious spiritual crimes a person can commit. The only sin Jesus stated there would be no forgiveness for if committed against the Spirit. Hear His words from Matthew 12:31 [Jesus speaking] “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit [KJV reads “against the Holy Ghost”] will not be forgiven men.” Since this act is so grave, please take the time to carefully review all the definitions below so you will have a deep and rich understanding of what blasphemy is and hence, be better equipped to avoid this most grievous sin.

Here is the definition, from the Greek language, of the word “blasphemy” in this verse and its other appearances in the New Testament.

988. blasfhmiva blaspheµmia, blas-fay-me´-ah; from 989; vilification (espec. against God):— blasphemy, evil speaking, railing.

989. blavsfhmo" blaspheµmoás, blas´-fay-mos; from a der. of 984 and 5345; scurrilous, i.e. calumnious (against man), or (spec.) impious (against God):— blasphemer (-mous), railing.

To bring clarity to the words vilification, scurrilous, calumnious, impious, and railing here are the meanings of the words vilify, scurrilous, calumny, impious, and rail .

vilify =

malign somebody: to make malicious and abusive statements about somebody

[15th century. < late Latin vilificare "hold cheap" < Latin vilis "worthless"]

scurrilous

1. abusive or defamatory: containing abusive language or defamatory allegations

2. foul-mouthed or vulgar: using or containing coarse, vulgar, or obscene language

3. wicked: behaving in ways thought to be evil or immoral

calumny

1. defamation: the making of false statements about somebody with malicious intent

2. defamatory statement: a slanderous statement or false accusation

[15th century. < Latin calumnia "false accusation" < calvi "deceive"]

impious

1. showing lack of religious respect: not showing due reverence for God or something holy

2. disrespectful: showing a lack of respect for somebody or something (formal)

rail

denounce or complain bitterly: to denounce, protest against, or attack somebody or something in bitter or harsh language

[15th century. Via French railler "mock, tease" < Old Provençal ralhar "chat, joke" < late Latin ragere "neigh, roar"]

Encarta ® World English Dictionary

Now with a much deeper and fuller understanding of blasphemy let me ask, have you, or anyone you have ever known, been guilty of blasphemy? Additionally, do you believe that the Church, Body of Christ, the world, and Christians really understand what blasphemy truly is and the seriousness of such an act?

Apostasy - Renunciation of Christ

The only unforgivable sin is the sin of apostasy - renouncing Christ.

It has been wrongly taught for years that not accepting Christ as your Savior is the “unforgiveable sin” and yes if you do not accept Christ as your Savior you will go to hell when you die, but it is not “technically” the quote – unquote “unforgivable sin” which is apostasy.

The renunciation of Christ that is apostasy is not something an atheist can do. Many people have a great misunderstanding about what apostasy is and what renouncing Christ is. The only type of person who can commit apostasy, who can truly renounce Christ, is a person who has known Christ. Therefore, a person would have to have been a Christian and then renounced Christ after becoming a Christian in order to commit apostasy.

Apostasy – I John 5 address what we must understand about Christ to be saved, and makes it known that God Himself bears witness of these Truths in our own spirit. Next the issue of praying for those who are in sin is brought into play and we told to pray for all sin except “sin leading to death” a reference to apostasy the highest form of blasphemy against the Holy Ghost because the Spirit has already bore witness in your (a Christian's) spirit of the Truths about Jesus and you (a Christian) later deny them to be true.

True biblical apostasy is a very rare thing to have happen.

Apostasy is a very difficult subject to fully understand and it takes a collection of the Scriptures to address the issue. That said, there is a portion of the book of Hebrews that covers this issue and then in I John 5we are told not to pray for this issue or a person so to speak who has committed apostasy. Note that Hebrews and I John are only a small portion of Scripture that touches on the issue of apostasy.

Please study1 John 5 and Hebrews 5, 6, and 7 with special attention to chapter 6. If you want to better understand it would be best to study the entire book of Hebrews and 1 John.

Im new here. I read some threads about the unforgivable sin. In the past I struggled with this. But not as much as I do now. I think I did it and don't know what to do.

It is intentionally attributing Jesus Christ miracles to Satan and many people believe that I have asked say that the sin can't be committed today since you can't see Jesus perform miracles today the Pharisees seeing the miracle claimed he got his power from Satan and Satan can't cast out Satan. Jesus told them that anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit can't be forgiven in this life or the ages to come it is a scary passage when you deal with OCD Scrupulosity like I deal with. I am worried that I committed in a yellow flickering light but I am mentally ill. There is no Yellow Light that is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. I understand your pain though it is a tough battle and it is hard to forgive yourself it involves getting such a hard heart the fact your asking probably proves that you have not done it. The answer that I get is that I haven't done since I still care about the Holy Spirit, Jesus, and God. He can forgive you if you accidentally mixed them up in a hallucination. I think your okay and just need to trust God and I am struggling with the same issue we need fellowship and to be the Church and unite together and rally and help people cope with fear. We suffer together and bond together!

The bible tells us that "as it is appointed for man to die once, so Christ was offered once for sin". This show us that the cross covers a life time of sins. The previous poster mentioned Hebrews 6, however you have to look closely at Hebrews 6 to determine what Apostacy actually is. Hebrews 6 states that the apostate is "recrucifying Christ" or "chricifying christ again". So let's think about this logically, if the cross of Christ covers a life time of sins, my sins today, and tomorrow. Then the only explanation for the person in Hebrews 6 is that they have died in their sins, or died in unbelief. It is not the case that the person, just made a statement walking away from faith, or went back to sin.

The bible tells us that "if we sin we have an advocate with the Father", if "we confess our sin, he is faithful and just to forgive our sin, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness".

So the question has to be asked, "what is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit"?

The pharisees were stating that the working of the Holy Spirit was the works of demons. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, is as final rejection of the working of the Holy Spirit, where, so we can continue to sin, we would rather say the drawing of the Holy Spirit is from Satan.

It is a state of heart that fully and finally rejects all the leading of the Holy Spirit.

A part of the leading of the Holy Spirit is to restore believers who have strayed from the truth, be that they fell back to sin, or any other sin of blasphemy.

A believer who rejects, fully and finally, a leading to return to God is in danger of the Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

But know that you can return to God, no matter how far you have fallen. For the cross covers our life time of sins.

Thanks this post make me realize that I have not blasphemed the Holy Spirit and that I can get forgiven by Jesus for whatever I did in the Yellow Light/Cross. I have been so scared that I blasphemed in a hallucination but it is not real and I would never intentionally blaspheme the Holy Spirit in the right mind it was schizophrenia induced. Thanks I just read Luke and that encouraged my heart that Jesus can restore me after Satan sifted me like wheat in the hallucination that Jesus is praying me and my name is still in the Lamb's Book of Life.

Look. I woudnt obsess too much.Making fun of Catholics is a very common sin. For your penance say 10 000 Hail Marys and 456 Rosaries. Oh and pray to Saint Pope Francis for forgiveness.
You should be fine then.

There most certainly have been Christians who have walked away from Christ denying him, but have returned to Him. I don't believe apostasy is unforgiveable if the person seeks God again at some pointl

It is an intriguing discussion you would think Jesus would forgive all sins since he died on the cross and rose again three days later. I understand that rejected Jesus all your life being unforgivable but on rest even a Christian can a make a mistake on accident. I had a hallucination and now I worry that I can't get forgiven but I trust Jesus that he can forgive me since it was an accident.

I think I've been apostasy. I've been hospitalised a couple times. In this time I didn't stood up for my faith. I fell in unbelief while I was an adult christian. In my negativety I was looking for ways how I could blaspheme the Holy Spirit. This grew in me and I was looking for what this sin is (I should have stand away from this). I think I did very wrong. It was never my intention to do it. But feel there is no way back. I'm very messed up inside.

Hi Rudolf I am sorry that your struggling with Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit. It is my concern as well as I struggle with lights that tell me I am unforgivable but it isn't biblical it is just mental illness. We must be strong and united as a church. Jesus is very forgiving and willing to forgive mistakes trust Jesus he will forgive.

I hope you all the best. I really do.. What do you mean though?? Mental Illness, OCD.. Because I for sure have OCD I believe.. But what do you mean??? How can you denounce Christ due to OCD? Curious

I will also pray for you brother if you mean no harm.. Perhaps demonic spirits?

Are you a Christian? Is Jesus your Lord and saviour?
If he is why do you assume that you are going to reject him. Do you really believe that you can hate Jesus more than he loves you?
