Airstrike kills Qassim Soleimani, head of Iran's elite Quds Force, at Baghdad airport

General Qassim Soleimani, the head of Iran's elite Quds Force, was killed in an airstrike at Baghdad's international airport early on Friday.

The strike also reportedly killed Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias known as the Popular Mobilization Forces, or PMF.

The killing of Soleimani, which was confirmed by the Revolutionary Guard, is a major blow for Iran. Together with the death of al-Muhandis, the killings could mark a potential turning point in the Middle East and are expected to draw severe retaliation from Iran and the forces it backs in the Middle East against Israel and American interests.

So now the US has targeted and assassinated a General of a country that we are not even at war with. God help us. Praying for our soldiers and US citizens around the globe, especially those in the Middle East, who are now at risk from a likely response from Iran.

But Iran has been at war with us since 1979.

One that cries death to America.
By the way -- they mean it!

Do they not pay attention?

I don't disagree, and I'm not mourning for the Iranians that died. But further escalation could be catastrophic on a human level.
Yes I agree. This seemed to have not only been a retaliatory attack because of the embassy attack, but preemptive of what intelligence gathered on what Suliamani had planned. This the meeting in Iraq.

Nope, when Trump took over the presidency the United States was not in conflict with Iran. Not long after taking office he withdrew from a multilateral diplomatic and reinstated sanctions that he intentionally used to put pressure on the Iranian government. Today he ordered the assassination of the number two man in Iran who was highly respected in that country.

Imagine if a foreign government assassinated a top ranking cabinet member of the US government. I don't think most Americans are prepared for what is likely to come next.

What was wrong with that? Obama paid off Iran and they kept expanding their terror networks.

But it is not like that. Soleimani is the General in charge of the Iranian Quds Guard. They are akin to our special forces. He has planned and executed operations against Americans for over 20 years and is responsible for over 600 US deaths in Iraq alone.

He masterminded an attack on an Iraqi government building where US Forced and Iraqi police we’re securing. Killed 5 American Soldiers and kidnapped 4 and executed them before being engaged by Apache helicopters.

More than the average American and don't get me wrong, I'm not the least bit sad over a bad guy being eliminated; but the United States government assassinating him isn't going to suddenly make everything better in the Middle East. Soleimani's replacement has already been moved up to fill the void and nothing will change regarding how the al Quds forces operate. Iran will retaliate at a time and place(s) of their choosing and they will have their proxies do the bidding that will be hard to trace back to Iran.

But it is not like that. Soleimani is the General in charge of the Iranian Quds Guard. They are akin to our special forces. He has planned and executed operations against Americans for over 20 years and is responsible for over 600 US deaths in Iraq alone.
Let me put it this way then. Imagine if a foreign government assassinated General Richard Clarke.

Once again, the Trump admin just assassinated the second in command of a sovereign nation on the soil of another sovereign nation neither of which we are at war with. Unfortunately American soldiers and even civilians are are going to pay the price for this as a result. I don't think most Americans are prepared for what is likely to come next.

All your other points are valid except Richard Clarke does not have the blood of several nations on his hands.

On what I quoted above. The second in command of PMF is a militia leader. A militia leader who recently on Iranian orders cracked down on fellow Iraqis brutally killing many and many more wounded. These were the Iraqis who were protesting Iranian influence in Iraqi government and also brutal tactics by PMF and Hezbollah in Iraq. These protests were happening in the recent October to November timeframe where Iraqi citizens were burning down Iranian government buildings and putting pressure in the Iraqi government to clean house have new elections and get rid of the Iranian puppets in their government. I believe yesterday’s strike took into account this most interesting strategic information. Not to mention the protests against the regime in Iran and also Lebanon.

I wonder why the Iraqi government allowed him to be there in the first place.

He pretty much was running the Iraqi government.
Well, in the past but Iran's influence has been sharply dwindling over the past 5 or 6 six years. Majority of Iraqis have a bad view of Iran now. Even the Sunnis in Iraq have a bad opinion of Iran.

The influence has been on the rise since ISIS and now firmly embedded in the Iraqi security forces and in Parliament. But you are correct, recently there has been a people's revolt over the Iranian influence and Suleimani came in to 'fix' that last month by ordering his goons to crack down on the protesters even opening fire on crowds, executions in front of families and making them pay for the bullet. Whenever it seemed like the government was going to concede to the protests, he would show up and "strengthen" the government Iran has a strangle hold on.

I guess what I am saying is, the fact Suleimani showed up in Iraq when he did to coordinate with PMF leadership should not be a surprise.

I am also convinced someone inside the Iraqi government confirmed with US intelligence that he would be there. The strike was 'too well coordinated' to be just a "pick up game."

That's not the information that I've seen. The brutality of the ISIS fighters has pushed Sunnis, who felt the wrath in northern Iraq away from the extremist side of Islam. The Shiites have also soured because of broken promises from Iran.

I am also convinced someone inside the Iraqi government confirmed with US intelligence that he would be there. The strike was 'too well coordinated' to be just a "pick up game."
Let's hope so.
