A bit personal here, and you're free to ignore it if you want, but many years ago in my atheist days I was going to do something bad. Just as I was about to act, "somebody" who looked somewhat like me just appeared, and I went down like a pole-axed bull. The only other person present thought I was dead, or close to it.
I made a complete recovery in short order. At the time though, I had this strange sense of something being pulled aside like a curtain so the other being became visible. "Space-time" perhaps? There's something that stops us perceiving the spiritual world, although the spiritual world can see us with ease. We live cheek by jowl at all times - it just that we can't see "them", although "they" can easily see us.
I think we have guardian angels, but I also think we might have guardian demons, a la CS Lewis "The Screwtape Letters". Lewis wrote that to be fair, he should have written a counterpoint. For example an archangel giving advice to the young chap's guardian angel, instead of the one-sided demonic advice given by Screwtape to Wormwood. Then he added "But who could possibly write it?" Every word would have to smell of heaven.
Maybe the cartoonist's gimmick of yesteryear with a little angel whispering in Daffy Duck's ear, with a little devil whispering in the other ear isn't so far off the mark.
In the case of Adolf Hitler, did he have a guardian angel? Or just a guardian demon? If he had both it's quite easy to see which one gained the upper hand.
