I was just wondering if it was considered satanic or witchcraft for a Christian to play D&D. My Christian boyfriend plays it and some of the characters he describes are pretty creepy. He even skips church to play it most of the time. He says it's not evil and I want to believe him, because he is a Christian, but I need other opinions on this. I'm curious.
People who sound like they're a lot smarter than I am tend to say that new school D&D actually is truly harmless. It's basically high fantasy type stuff that you can read in any zillion of novels.

However, og D&D stuff had actual magic, real demons' names and other items. It's all legit stuff and should be avoided.

Which is which? When does the safe stuff enter the picture? What's risky and what isn't? I wish I knew. But apparently some of it really is okay.

We may as well start calling Candy Crush and Farmville Satanic since it has taken people off going to church more than D&D ever has.
Don't tempt me.. I'm baptist. I just might start calling those things satanic. It's what we do.

No, you do not need opinions from others and you do not need to vilify you bf, before you go find someone more to your liking.

All you need to know is that you feel uncomfortable with it. Therefore you have every right to move on and find someone with hobbies you agree more with?

There is nothing wrong with your bf and what he is doing, and nothing wrong with you not liking what he is doing and wanting something else.

Christians shouldn't play D&D. Nobody should play D&D. Not because it's Satanic(it's not), but because it's super boring. As in, "makes my eyes bleed" boring.

This is actually true and i was going to say that if the TC’s BF is really into it then he must have been playing more than 40 hrs in total because it takes a LONG time for anything to get interesting.

My friends and I played it back in HS and we had to use excel to keep track of a lot of things.. after 4 months of playing every saturday, it was still boring.. it took almost a year for anything exciting (which it became very fun) but then we graduated and had to move to different parts of the world to do college.

It is the mack daddy of all RPG games though.

I saw a friendship destroyed over Dungeons and Dragons they would later get back together some but it definitely has a dark element to it. I always try to avoid the dark.
I think that there are similar interpersonal relations affected in all role playing games. We had two Soldiers duking it out over their characters which one should “marry the princess.” Apparently when the role of the dice went to one guy the other guy took the grudge into IRL.

Lol that was an interesting Article 15 reading.

I used to play D&D back in the 80's. Well, I actually played a horror role playing game that took place in the 1920's more instead. I used to think it was just harmless fun. Most of the times it was that. But when I accepted Jesus as my Savior, I no longer wanted to focus on dark and evil things that were in the game we played anymore. D&D involves magic and or the casting of spells. The Bible talks about how one can sin in their mind. Jesus said that if we look upon a woman in lust, we have committed adultery in our heart and are in danger of hell fire (Matthew 5:28-30). The apostle John says that hating your brother is the equivalent of murder and no murderer has eternal life abiding in them (1 John 3:15). These are mind sins that the Bible condemns. So what is the big deal about sorcery? If a person committed sorcery in the Old Testament, they were to be killed or stoned by God's people. Today, people think that is no big deal to fantasize about magic or wizards, etc.; Little do they realize if they cracked open their Bible, God hates sorcery and witchcraft. But if we fantasize about what God hates, then we are not truly loving God like we should be. We are fantasizing about sinful things that God hates. God would not fantasize about witchcraft. So why should we do so if we claim to be a Christian or Christ follower?

Also, to say that D&D cannot influence you to want to cast spells is simply not true by those who want to make light of D&D. I wanted to cast a spell as a result of D&D and I was not even my favorite role playing game back then. I am glad nothing came of my desire to cast a spell. I am glad I never kept pushing to make that happen by going down the road of the occult. Some people do.

Dungeons and Dragons features magic, which is always going to divide opinions amongst Christians. Some will say that you should have nothing to do with anything that even mentions it, while other will say that it's not really a problem as long as you're able to separate fiction from reality (and if you're not then it's not the depiction of magic that's the problem). Neither side is likely to agree and you're not going to get a clear answer.

But in this case, what both sides will agree on, and it has already been pointed out, is that your boyfriend is skipping church to play it. That's not necessarily a sign that he's gone too far with it - for example if it's the only time the group is able to meet then a once a week activity isn't something he's spending an excessive amount of time on, but it is something to be concerned about, probably more so than the content.

Why would your boyfriend's moral compass even be accurate seeing that he is an idolater who chooses his own pleasure and entertainment over hearing the word of God and fellowship and worship? And any game that involves wickedness which God hates (like sorcery) is evil, even if it were only limited to the realm of fantasy. Wicked fantasy alone will send a person to hell. As has been basically said already, you cannot love God and fantasize over that which He hates. Occult/witchcraft is in the realm of the devil; and not utterly hating everything about it in any form is showing sympathy for the devil.

This Scripture not only deals with the D & D issue, but also speaks to why it's right and essential for you to break off from your relationship with your idolatrous boyfriend.

2 Corinthians 6:14-7:1:
"Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness? And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God."

If you're skipping church for video games (or anything trivial for that matter) there's a problem. I know nothing about the game itself, it's far more concerning that he's forgoing worship and communion with the saints to play games. That suggests to me someone who is spiritually weak and immature, someone you should probably move on from.

I'd avoid it. A lot of folks will argue that it's ok, it's innocent, etc. But if it's rife with demonic and occult imagery, is proving to be kind of addictive, and is causing him to skip church, avoid it.
This is lots of Christian Games and Animations here:

To all:

If a role playing game promotes witchcraft, it would be no different if it was role playing game based on inappropriate contentography. Why would one want to fantasize about evil? Let's say somebody plays a role playing game based on inappropriate content, but they eliminated the inappropriate content aspect. But if other people thought you played a role playing game based on inappropriate content, and yet you changed the rules to not do that, others would think you are doing evil. Paul says avoid to have any appearance of evil. In our culture today, magic is acceptable because we do not have witches running around openly who do bad things in plain site. It is not popularized as being bad. So witchcraft gets a pass. But if it is inappropriate content, and they were to fantasize about that, it would clearly be wrong because such a thing is clearly condemned in the Christian world. But both are grievous sins that lead to spiritual death. Why would a Christ follower want to associate with anything that is of the darkness or sin?

Think.

I played the X-Box variation years ago with my daughter. It was a cool game. Nothing more or less.

We played games growing up. But it was considered entertainment. It wasn’t a label or identity. It was an indoor activity when going out wasn’t an option. We didn’t stay in to play.

I played it for years. It's a game. As with anything, some people can take it too far. I wouldn't worry about it unless he starts thinking he can use magic.

Also, if Jack Chick is against it, it's probably ok.

D&D by itself is just a game. It is not sinful in itself. But anything can become sinful. It would be wrong to skip church to play D&D just like it would be wrong to skip church to watch football.
