This is where it pays to dig into the original languages, or at least to compare several translations, because the verb tenses can be so important. Here is my rendering of that verse:

For if we are sinning willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, -Heb 10:26

Notice that the verb sin is in the present participle, indicating ongoing present action. The Disciple's Literal says the same thing a different way:

For while we are willfully sinning after the receiving of the knowledge of the truth, a sacrifice no longer remains for sins,

And very accurate mainstream versions such as ESV and NASB concur by rendering it "if we go on sinning..." NIV, LEX, NET say the same thing in slightly different ways.

The accurate sense of the verse is that while you are in unrepentant sin you are in big trouble. It is not saying that once you sin you cannot repent, confess, and return.

BTW, the same thing is true of the verse about looking back from the plow causing one to be unfit for the Kingdom. It's not a "look back once and you're fried" situation, like Lot's wife. Rather, it's "you can't plow straight rows unless you're looking ahead in the direction in which you're going".

Whatever your sin was, you obviously regret it now. Make your repentance formal by confessing it to the Lord. Do it with faith in His goodness and kindness, that He will graciously receive you back, like the father of the prodigal son at Luke 15. Remember, this same author of Hebrews only a few verses later describes what is needed in order to please God:

And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him. -Heb 11.6

Paul, you have a great name! I feel as if the Holy Spirit has left me, and I am wondering if the HS has left, if I am able to repent. I believe in Jesus, his life, death and resurrection....but so do the demons. I want to believe I am forgiven, yet I find that I am constantly reminded of my past. I am having a hard time getting myself to forgive the past and move forward. Any help would be appreciated.

I would stop obsessing on it and move forward. Repent, confess, and start being faithful to the light you have; more will be given, according to the stewardship parables. One of those parables even tells us to be faithful with unrighteous riches. So if your riches feel unrighteous, so what? Be faithful anyway. Trust in God. Christ has done the work already. What a shame if you were not locked out but counted yourself as such and behaved accordingly, bringing judgment on yourself for lack of faith. Do give the enemy any more of your time.

Plenty of saints have felt devoid of the HS. John of the Cross wrote a book about it, as have others. Feelings are unreliable and cannot always be trusted. Get back into the Word, particularly the faithfulness and promises of God, and stop letting the devil eat your lunch (2Cor 2.1-11; Php 1.6). (I just dealt with this in another thread, if you care to check my posting history.)

Hello, sorry if I am about to repeat anything, but I didn't get a chance to read everyone's responses!

Okay! Hello, my name is Tyffani :) I was raised in the Church since I was 3 years old, accepted Christ as my Savior at the age of 7 and am still in Church today. Through my High School to early 20's years, I fell away from the Church, HARD! I began hanging out with the wrong crowds and began experimenting with drugs and sex. My father was a Youth Pastor at the time, so it's not like I didn't know what I was doing.

Just like you, I reached a point where I felt like the Holy Spirit had left me, and I had done too much and fallen too far for Him to even want to try and reach me. What I thought was my "Unforgivable Sin" was the fact that I got Pregnant before getting married. I was very depressed and almost reached suicidal at one point. What changed everything for me was a Song that led me to a very important Passage in the Bible.

"Restore to Me" By Mac Powell was a song inspired by Psalm 51

The Lyrics are incredibly powerful alone, but when you read Psalm 51 to gain the context, it becomes such a beautiful plea from one of the Bible's Greats. (I really suggest listening and reading both of these on your own :) )

Here is a link to a Testimonial I posted on here a while back:

The Lord's Prodigal Daughter!

I give a summary of the above. I do hope this helps you and anyone else reading to gain a little perspective. :)

Just know one thing, God will never leave you, nor forsake you. It is on us to allow Him in and work in us according to His Purpose. He doesn't care who we were or where we came from, all that matters is where we go from here. My Pastor always starts his services by saying "if you are here today and worried you are not good enough to be apart of this whole "God-thing", welcome! You are among an imperfect family made perfect only through the blood of Jesus Christ. No perfect people are allowed in this family, so dive on in!"

God Bless!

Did your heart feel cold and hardened? Mine does. I listened to the song, and ironically, this is the Psalm I continue to recite in my mind, yet it does not seem to help me. I feel so helpless and so hopeless. Any more words would be great to hear from you.

I believe I have committed the unforgivable sin. I believe I have been apostate for quite some time. I felt like the Holy Spirit left me 8 months ago and I want to repent, but I don't seem to have the help of the HS. I am so depressed and feel hopeless. I am having a hard time going to church because I dont feel I belong any more. I believe I made a commitment to the Lord in 1985, but my lifestyle was not always in step. When my wife asked for a divorce, I got bitter and turned away from going to church, started dating a non-Christian, and was living in sin. I felt promted by the Spirit to leave the relationship, and I did not do it right when I was prompted and I felt like the HS left me. I am desperate.....Any words would be helpful.
According to Mark 3:28-30, the unforgivable sin is saying that the Holy Spirit is evil. The teachers of the law said Jesus had an evil spirit.

Did your heart feel cold and hardened?

I did feel like that at times.

The problem I think we, as sinful beings, have is that we tend to imagine God as this overly strict judge that is unwilling to allow second chances. Even though we hear the Salvation story and its all about second chances, I think we find it hard to comprehend that, because humans are far less loving and forgiving. We can't say for sure how God would react in any given situation, because we haven't seen Him standing in front of our eyes. The closest thing we have to even try to imagine Him is our parents and the people we come into contact with everyday. We don't think these people are God, but what we experience on Earth shapes our psychological view point of Him. We see heart break, rejection and run into few people we can trust. We see awful things happening in the World, and it can make it hard to imaging that there really is a higher being that is freely willing to accept you just as you are. You don't have to fix a single thing about yourself to come to God. You just go to Him, broken and vulnerable to be fixed in His Love.

It's INSANELY hard to comprehend anyone being that way towards you, let alone the one who created everything you see and knows all that has been, is, and ever will be. But it really is that simple. God created us to obey, love and serve Him. That's all He wants from us and it's just on us to surrender into it. Through Devotion, Prayer, and building relationships with fellow Christians that will be there to help you through the toughest times of it all.

Now, it's a simple concept, but it will be hard to follow and live in. Just know, it's not like quitting an addiction. No one expects you to turn full circle and become a sinless Jesus clone. It's gonna be tough at times, because the enemy doesn't want things to work out for us. That's why you have your circle of close Christian friends to help keep you grounded when it feels like you can't seem to do it on your own.

TRUST ME, I know how easy it is to hear all this advice, even when it comes from someone who has been through something similar, but it is MUCH HARDER to actually do it. It took a while for me to have my moment of realization, but it will come as long as you are honestly seeking God with all of you.

Nothing we do can ever separate us from His love, most times, it's us holding ourselves back and holding God at arms length.

Just really think about Psalm 51 and everything leading up to that passage. I have heard that passage before. Multiple times. But the significance didn't sink in immediately. David, the man known in the Bible as "a man after God's heart" had done something that would be considered "unforgivable" by our standards. He committed adultery and got Bathsheba pregnant. In order to cover it up, he sent for her husband to come home immediately to sleep with her so he would think it was his child and not David's, but her husband died on the front-lines. David did everything he could to cover it all up, but was confronted by Nathan. Nathan revealed his own sin to him, and he realized he had fallen so far from that young man that lived every breath for the Lord. He says himself that he is so scared that the Holy Spirit has left him. So this King, put in place by God himself, falls to his knees and begins to plead for the restoration of his soul. He goes to God, just as he is, and is totally vulnerable. God, being the forgiving machine He is, forgave David and restored Him. Now, He didn't make David perfect, David went on to continue to make mistakes here and there (documented or not), but He restored that fire in David because he had a moment of true surrender.

i hope that helps some :) let me know if there's anything else I can do! (sorry for the long post, there is so much that can be said on this subject lol)

read the whole context of "willful sin" it is talking about apostacy, if a Jewish Christian counted the blood of Christ a common thing not able to cleanse from sin and go back to moses. that is the willful sin, not small sins. etc if the verse is used out of context it produces condemnation. many today are careless in interpreting scripture they pull verses out of context and make false absolutes out of them. this is one case it leaves a person feeling hopeless. that is the enemy not the Holy Spirit.

I feel so lost, and that I cannot get back, as I feel the Holy Spirit has left me. I feel so hopeless, and I now know that Satan himself deceived me as he deceived Eve in the Garden. I have been slowly letting the devil deceive me to the point that I have lost all sensitivity to the conviction of the Holy Spirit. I want to have the faith of a mustard seed, and this is my only hope. I believe in Jesus, and it says in the Bible that even the demons believe. I so want to repent, but feeling as if the HS has left me, I do not think I can repent on my own. I feel like Esau, wanting to get back to God, but unable to do so. I could go on, but if you would reply, that would be great. Thanks!

I so want to repent, but feeling as if the HS has left me, I do not think I can repent on my own.

Okay, now I say this out of the deepest love, I PROMISE!

That is the silliest thing I have ever heard :) (again, out of love).

When a New Believer comes to Christ for the first time, they are supposed to admit they are a sinner and repent. Just as we are to continue to do as Christians. When a new believer does this, they do not have the Holy Spirit in them initially. By what you said, their repentance is useless and no one can ever become a Christian because the Holy Spirit is not in us in the beginning. Just try to understand the logic there.

We ask for the Holy Spirit to enter us. It is only through our surrender and obedience that this can happen. If you feel like the Holy Spirit has really "left", then you need to come at this from the perspective of a new believer.

I feel so hopeless, and I now know that Satan himself deceived me as he deceived Eve in the Garden.

You seem to be able to Quote the Bible fairly well, but I think this is another stumbling block you are placing in front of yourself. It's great to be able to Quote verses, but what good is any of it if you don't really understand the whole point behind all of them? The Bible has so many different stories in it, but they all fall under the one true purpose behind the Book even existing.

I think you need to let go of everything you "know" right now and come at the Bible with fresh eyes. The Bible talks numerous times about how the smartest and richest people in the world will have the hardest time with this whole Salvation thing. It's because when you are rich you already have everything, so what need do you have for God? and when you are smart, you already "know" everything, so again, what need do you have for God?

Everything you have quoted to me has been used a little out of context (not sure if this is the right word I'm looking for here). In the sense that, you are finding the parts of the Bible that reveal to you who you really are:

A sinner who deserves to spend eternity separated by God.

But that is only a third of the story. You are missing the whole point here. We are sinners and that will not change whether we accept Christ or curse His name. You were born a sinner and will die a sinner. But that's what makes God so amazing! The rest of the story is that He sent Jesus to die for ALL of our sins. Not just the ones that we think He will forgive, but ALL of them!

PAST>PRESENT>FUTURE

God doesn't have a diary of every sin ever committed by every person ever to live. He let's it all go.

Look at Paul, he was born Saul and spent a good portion of his life tracking and killing Christians. When he was transformed by the Blood, he became the man to literally start the Church. He devoted the rest of his life to God and the Kingdom Plan. God gave him everything he needed to do this too.

Do you think you are worse than Paul? Did you devote the first part of your life to killing Christians and doing everything possible to stop God's Kingdom? No? Then I think you need to cut yourself some slack man :)

Life is too short for us to spend the whole time dwelling on all the things we have, are, and will mess up. Let it go. RIGHT NOW. God HIMSELF already did, so what makes you better than Him to say you can't?

We make the choice every day. So starting right this second, you can choose to stay in your misery and do nothing to forward your part in the Kingdom, or you can look at your whole current perspective and tell yourself that you are being silly! You are going to slip up, that's inevitable, unfortunately. BUT, God knows that and STILL doesn't care! He just wants you!

So PLEASE, for your own sake and sanity:

Just let it all go :)

I feel as if I have gone too far....
I thought I was chosen, but I guess I was not. I believe I was a false convert. I would like to think otherwise, and I am trying to believe otherwise, but I just don't know.

Unforgiveable sin is not falling away. Do you remember David in the old testament who committed adultery and murder? Yes, he suffered but when he repented he found forgiveness. I want to encourage you to call a Christian counseling number: 1-855-382-5433. God loves you.

I have more than fallen away. I have sinned knowingly for a long time and I believe the Holy Spirit has left me. I don't want it to be so at all. I thank you for your kind words and for anything else you might want to share.

I have more than fallen away. I have sinned knowingly for a long time and I believe the Holy Spirit has left me. I don't want it to be so at all. I thank you for your kind words and for anything else you might want to share.

Nothing that anyone of the flesh can tell you will ever be sufficient. You need to go to Jesus for rest. I say this because I have felt the Holy Spirit grow quiet. I knew that the Hand of the Lord was raised against me. I knew it was due to my own rebellion.

I remember one day fornicating. I felt the Holy Spirit move as if to warn me to stop but I didn't listen because I was in the heat of the moment. I then felt the Spirit grow quiet. I immediately could tell something was wrong. I went to pray and immediately could feel the difference. I could hear my words echoing in the room as though I was in a wide open space with no furniture. I had never felt aline when I prayed until that moment when I felt the Spirit grow quiet.
I immediately was attacked by spirits of fear, depression (the bible calls it heaviness), uncertainty, hopelessness, then I began to get physically sick (spirit of infirmity) and I could find no rest.
God taught me many things during this time.

First, He taught me that there are consequences for rebellion. He is an all consuming fire, after all. As we struggle through trials, He will use the trial to burn off anything that is not like Him. Isaiah 33:14-16 explains how we can dwell with a consuming fire.

The second thing He taught me is to accept His discipline. Proverbs 3:11-12 Do not despise the LORD's instruction, my son, and do not loathe His discipline; for the LORD disciplines the one He loves, just as a father disciplines the son in whom he delights."

I want you to know that I can now feel the Holy Spirit stronger than ever before but it took many months to feel His presence.

Below are the steps I took:
1. I would not sleep if I felt was being attacked by an evil spirit. I would get in my car and drive even if in the middle of the night. I would park close by places with water (lakes or fountains) and read my bible and pray to the Lord for mercy.
2. READ THE BIBLE! I cannot stress this enough. There's a reason why Ephesians 6-10-18 calls the Word of God the sword of the Spirit. You cannot fight the enemy without a sword. You must study every chance you get because God will perfect you in this trial. Reading the bible will cause conviction which will lead to confession. Lay your confessions at the feet of Jesus. If you take them before Him now, your conscience will bear witness and your thoughts will defend you when you stand before God and He judges your secrets through Christ Jesus. Romans 2:12-16
3. Immerse yourself in the things of God. No secular music, movies etc. Go to church or if your not ready for church yet, go to bible studies (that's what I did). Plenty of sources online as well. Concern yourself with things of the Kingdom of Heaven and not so much about yourself. Listen to gospel music and at night play Psalms or spiritual warfare prayers (YouTube has many). Let them play all night long.
3. Fight in the Spirit. Interestingly, it was during this time of silence that God taught me to wage spiritual warfare. I have a "spiritual warfare prayer" I found and modified. I would recite it when I felt the presence of anything not like God. Let me know if you want it and I will post it for you.
4. Surrender to God. Call on the name of Jesus for help! Many times, you will keep trying to fix the situation when really you need to trust God and his decisions. Trust that this too shall pass. Trust that trials are for our good. Exodus 20:20

Hi; that Ephesians passage is very searching indeed, and the Romans 2 passage contains Paul's great treatise on repentance.

Good to see you on the forums.
