So what is the point of chasing after riches if one is just going to die eventually?

Think about it. We are all born, we live a certain amount of years on this planet, and then we all die.

Death is inevitable.

This is why the Bible calls this world the temporary, because GOD in His wisdom knew that it was vain for us to get up and go to work every day. People have told me that they need to "Get ahead in life." Are they afraid of death? Are they afraid of dying? Do they think they need to eat to survive? Possibly, but all they are keeping alive is their fleshly body. It does nothing for the eternal spirit/soul that dwells inside their flesh. My argument is, what is the point? People work their whole lives for riches, and then they die and leave it to their heirs. Their heirs possess these things until they themselves die eventually. It seems like riches can last for hundreds of years, and be passed down from heir to heir before the riches themselves decay of old age...its just the people themselves that don't last for long, is what I am saying. Some of us live to be 80, I think? Riches don't last, for anyone.

I am 32 right now, and some people still think that is quite young, perhaps I have my whole temporary life ahead of me, lol. But one day I am going to leave this world as well.

Nothing is this life lasts. As switchfoot would say, this life is a thing that does not last for long. How wise they were to make a song like that!

I am still alive, yes, but I do know that I am going to die one day. The life that I am living now, in my flesh, will not last forever. I think everyone who is alive right now knows that this life will eventually be terminated.

I was born into this world poor and it looks like I am going to end my earthly life the same way. My mom and dad did work their whole lives to put food for us on the table, yes, but they never ever got rich from doing any of it. It just goes to show you that someone can work their whole lives to get ahead and still not actually get ahead. The rat race is a struggle to survive that ultimately does not succeed. Everyone goes extinct anyway. Its all in vain.

I believe what GOD said when HE told us that riches are vain. Because he knew that we all eventually die. I think it is in the book of psalms somewhere.

I have since detached myself from my worldly possessions. I don't ever think I have ever really cared that much about them anyhow because of my lack of taking proper care of them. I have some stuff, yes, but it is just stuff. Its not like it is alive or breathing or anything like that.

My mom kind of fusses over it and she does not know why I take better care of my things, and I tell her, "Mom, they are just things." But she is like, the family matriarch or something and I have to do what she tells me to do. I want her to understand that material possessions are not as important as she thinks they are. But, like, whenever I leave my coat on the floor or bring in some plant matter from outside she gets so upset. The way she fusses over me and this stuff has sometimes caused me stress. How do I tell her that I just don't care about my material possessions the way she does? Its like she thinks they actually matter or something.

It sounds like you have much to be thankful for, Jacqueline, as you stated that you live with your parents.

Counting our blessings and thanking God for them puts into perspective a heart condition that pleases God.

God is GOOD, is He not?

I'm just joking. My wife and I are really getting into the minimalist movement- it's about downsizing to the bare essentials. There are great documentaries about the movement and it's a Christian concept. Money would buy freedom though, which means more if you have a soul crushing job.

I think that was Solomon's point in Ecclesiastes. That everything under the sun is chasing after the wind. Yet, he built more stuff that most people all the same

The Preacher had much to say on the subject of the meaningless of this world including telling us to enjoy the fruits of our labor as those are the gift of God. Rather than using that ephemeral nature of the physical existence as an excuse to do nothing he counseled taking that which God gave us in this lifetime and enjoying it. Don't focus on gaining as much as possible nor on the lack of eternal meaning that labor and striving have but instead focus on the joy one can gain while alive and allow God to deal with the eternal question of meaning. Without Christ, that message would appeal only to Hedonists but with Christ in the context it becomes "Take no thought for the morrow.".

I praise the LORD that I woke up today, although I was sick with my stomach problems again when I woke up, another vain day to live my vain life to go about doing vain things for the sake of vanity. Thank you, LORD, for my vain life which I live in vain. Amen.

The minimalist movement? That is like, where you have like, next to no material possessions, right?

I admit that I have been captivated by the beauty of things I saw and then I wanted them, must end that behavior before it leads to covetousness...GOD does not like the greedy desire to have more.

You've gotta' wonder sometimes what the point is, PERIOD. If I'm not 'good enough' then why design me to be imperfect in the first place? "Jesus saved you" - yeah, but from what? A life I didn't even ask for?

I think the bible is basically too smart for 99% of humans. When you FEEL it, it all makes sense, but when a human is preaching, it generally comes off as gobbledegook.

Education is key :pencil:

There is a difference between appreciating what God has given us, by taking care of His gifts, and distaining them as worthless. That's probably one of the things that your Mom has been trying to teach you. But you have a choice; either pick up your clothes or risk tripping over them, and injuring yourself.

The first point of chasing after riches is first to ensure that you have what you need.

The second point is to be able to pass forward what God has given to you. If you have children, it is your responsibility to leave them a Godly inheritance, so that they can live independently, and won't end up becoming someone else's problem.

True, but we're not dead yet. Life is for living.

Little birdy, little birdy, come and sing me your sweet song.

Hie Chris, I take it you and wifey aren't keen on prosperity preachers. I personally do not agree with preachers who base their sermons on material blessings and deliverance i.e job restoration, marriage restoration and healing etc. I feel that type of gospel leads people away from Christ as prosperity becomes our primary focus. However I wouldn't say no to riches and whatnot as long as, The Lord knows I can handle stuff like that.

I understand the points you are making but, regarding your mother... we are supposed to honor our mother and father so even though you don't agree with her attitude about material things, hang up your coat and clean up after yourself. You said your Mom and Dad worked all their lives to put food on the table, honor them by showing them some respect.

So your mom has to clean up after you and you think this is about you not caring about material possessions? You might find that when you’re on your own and have to completely provide for yourself that you value the things you buy more. If you want to live frugally, you have to take care of the things you have so that you don’t have to buy more things.

The pursuit of wealth above all else is dangerous. Laziness and wastefulness are not to be praised either.

Jesus told a Gentile woman, “It is not right to give the children’s bread to dogs.”

Jesus also taught, “Do not toss your pearls to swine.” Matt. 7:6

How many poor people have given much to pets and are still poor?

Funny how most of the prosperity preacher's sermons always seem to circle around to tithing as the true measure of faith.

money is a way people fill a void. It can be pursuing things they never had growing up or, maintaining the life they had growing up which seems to be the more common of the two. The issue with having a high paying job is it often requires so much of your time that you become absent from life, the world, your family, your friends. The best way to get wealthy is invest. I'm stuck in the middle. I typically work 12- 15 hours day with some pushing 20 hours when ever I have shows and it takes a physical toll on me. It's great money and it does support everything I love to do but I rarely get to do them because of it. I'm 30 and never even been on a date. When I'm off, I sleep, go to the spa or sit in a cigar shop and relax...
