Teacher salaries in America have fallen in many areas, come up only incrementally in others.

Teacher shortages will solve that problem (supply and demand).

That's why you gave that reaction to the word then. Got it!

I was on that like a duck on a Junebug. :D

Not unless there's an increase in the supply of folks willing to be teachers. Considering how a teaching degree in America is considered to be one of the worst returns on investments of any degree you could get, that's unlikely to happen unless teaching salaries improve dramatically so they are more comparable to the salaries that could be earned with degrees that cost the exact same amount to get.

Exactly why school districts need to be better funded.

Their budget should be determined by their performance. Do a good job educating the kids, get more money.

Not any that had worked in the lifetime of the kids in that trailer, probably not even in the lifetime of many of the teachers. They were so outdated that when we replaced them it took a heck of a lot longer on account of how the standard size had changed since they were installed.

Did you install central air or window units?

Maybe if CEOs and senior level executives curtailed their greed somewhat? A lovely example of that is when Nortelcom collapsed and went into bankruptcy some 10 years ago. It wasn't until about 2 years ago that the workers received their back pay and a pension settlement. Now, here's the kicker --- the senior level executives received their full pay including annual bonuses for that entire time. What is wrong here?

If people are having a problem with executive's pay, stop buying their stuff.

Solve the structural problems first, then worry about pay. Teachers complain about class size. Remove unruly students and presto, problem solved.

When there's 30 kids crammed into a trailer that doesn't have working AC on a day when it's 105 degrees outside, they're going to get unruly. Where exactly do you want the kids removed to?
We were working at an elementary school. Having the parent of a 6 yr old who is acting up face losing her job to come pick up him from school is about as butt-backwards as you can get.

Yeah there's structural problems that need to be fixed. Billionaires shouldn't be allowed to find whatever tax exemption they can exploit to avoid paying taxes. More money going into education would alleviate a lot of the issues.

Sorry, I was looking at the problem more broadly than the one you describe.

Have you considered that the problems you are describing just aren't fixable?

School districts only have so much money. Eliminate anything that doesn't belong in the school budget and they'll have plenty of money for teacher pay.

No air conditioning?

Most of the older school buildings here in Baltimore aren’t air conditioned. Apparently the logic was that it’s not needed since kids don’t attend school in the summer.

My high school was one of the oldest buildings in my city. Cooling was provided by circulating the air through a huge 'catacomb-like' cellar, deep beneath the building. Air movement was unnoticeable as the air moved slowly through doorway size vents in the classrooms. The building was constructed of concrete with 12 inch thick walls that acted as a heat/cool sink.

The janitors would also routinely enter the classrooms to open or close the large windows to take advantage of outside temperatures.

How much do Kentucky teachers make? What to know about educators' pay

What does a teacher make in Kentucky?
The Kentucky Department of Education says the average classroom teacher’s salary this school year is $53,923.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
True, considering they are college educated and have to put up with a lot, that's not the best pay.
Ca. Pays about 20 grand more per year but, the cost of living here is also higher.
I think they all should make 100 g a year.

Schools in poor, rural districts are the hardest hit by nation's growing teacher shortage

There's parts of Kentucky that are nice, where there's mansions even. Then there's parts that are so poor unless you saw it, experienced it with your own eyes, you'd have a hard time believing that it was the US. It looks more like some 3rd world country.

It costs $31,000 a year to go to the University of Kentucky, Bob. Sure many can qualify for some financial aid, but lots have to take out big loans, that they then have to pay off. Some can find some incentives special for teaching positions, but there's usually a lot of strings attached to it. Now if $53K is the average, that's not what the new teachers fresh out of college paying off their student debt are making. For the same cost as it takes to get a teaching degree, somebody could get a degree in another field. For my own degree, from my school, the starting salary is $88,000. Across the country it's pretty high starting out. Once you finish graduate school, it goes way up. That's starting out, age 21-24 on average. Not 44 with a family and a mortgage.

There's folks God gave the gift of teaching to, who'd be great, make a world of difference. But they want to be able to have families, have a decent life. Not be "martyrs in the classroom."

I think schools used to start after Labor Day. But then the start date got moved up on account of how in the spring that's when standardized tests are usually given, so they wanted to get in as many class days as possible before then. When we were in Appalachia in August, the schools had been back in session for a while. The trailers that were used as classrooms were so hot there was a fear of kids passing out in there. So they were teaching in the cafeteria instead, which was a mess on account of how sound traveled like crazy there. It was almost impossible to get the kids to focus on what they needed to learn in their own class. The borders they'd put up were useless in blocking out the noise. The cafeteria also was in awful shape, with a leaky roof that we just did not have the time to get to. It wasn't raining then, but of course it did later on.

I would say (from what I have witnessed) in California the percentage of slacker teachers to be at the very, very most 5%.

That would be less than found doing other jobs in the United States. Seems the US as a whole has about a 20% workers slacker rate?

I don't know about slackers. I just think the school system could be organized a little better. Athletics, and music, are major expenses and an even bigger distraction to education. Cut those programs from the school budget and there will be enough money to pay teachers better.

Really? Cut athletics? I thought you were so big on people being health conscious, and you want to eliminate one of the only few occasions many pupils are forced to exert themselves?
