Write down some practical ways we might help young people choose God’s way in the area of sex. (Question taken from a bible study I'm doing)
Be around people that will keep you accountable. This is why church is important. To be constantly around others that:
1. Sharpen you
Iron sharpens iron,
and one man sharpens another.
2. Correct you in love
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness.
- Galatians 6:1
3. Remind you of the purpose of sex & the context in which it is beneficial
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
But because of the temptation to sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife and each woman her own husband.
You may think there’s no harm in having sex before marriage; but you created neither yourself nor sex so you can’t give yourself or any activity objective purpose. If there is no God it’s all relative. Everyone has moral absolutes. Any time you use the word should you remove relative morality. The word should appeals to a standard outside of us & you act as if it’s real. Society cannot create this as society is constantly changing, therefore societies morals aren’t absolute.
The grass withers, the flower fades,
but the word of our God will stand forever.
You may think it’s changed over time, which it has to an extent, but the core principles remain the same. The language has been modernised so that it’s easier to understand for different cultures, but the morals are never changing. The covenants are different throughout the bible. The old covenants lead people to the end of themselves, to recognise their need for a saviour. Jesus said in Matthew 5:17:
Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them.
2 Corinthians 5:16-21 explains the transition from the old law to the new after Jesus resurrection:
16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Furthermore exemplified in Romans 3:21-27:
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith.
