"Putin’s conduct is bound to win sympathy even from some of Russia’s enemies, the ones who feel the international system is not delivering for them. Generally, if you like that system, you will consider Vladimir Putin a menace. If you don’t like it, you will have some sympathy for him. Putin has become a symbol of national sovereignty in its battle with globalism. That turns out to be the big battle of our times. As our last election shows, that’s true even here."

Christopher Caldwell, "How to Think About Vladimir Putin".

I don't disagree with that statement. Putin is going to defend the national interest of Russia. I expect our President to do the same....but he clearly isn't.

Trump was elected for precisely that reason - a country tired of trying to please everybody but themselves. He is the first President since World War II of the view that the burdens of the United States' "global leadership" role outweigh the benefits. The American people, in fact have rarely had the opportunity to elect such a candidate.

The idea is that America is not to be the "leader of the free world". America will simply be America. From that standpoint, America's and Russia's national interests are not in conflict at all. On the contrary, they are quite complimentary. Because Trump, too, is a fighter for national sovereignty and against globalism, Putin is an ally and not an enemy.

US-Republican
A central part of the Republican talking points in defense of Trump is blaming Ukraine for interfering n the 2016 US elections. How far will the Republicans go in supporting Putin's positions? Is this the same party of Ronald Reagan?

As this article highlights:

Sen McConnel's refusal to take up "the DETER Act, a bipartisan bill that would impose sanctions on Russia if it interferes again in 2020"

Sen Richard Burr: “The president can say that they [Ukraine] meddled because they had a preference, the elected officials,”

Rep Devin Nunes repeated the mantra during the Intelligence committee hearings to which Fiona Hill characterized as “a fictional narrative that has been perpetrated and propagated by the Russian security services themselves.”

...and then there is this:

Tucker Carlson took these arguments to new heights on his show Monday night, not only minimizing Russian involvement in 2016 but questioning why the U.S. was opposing its incursion into Ukraine at all. “I think we should probably take the side of Russia if we have to choose between Russia and Ukraine,” Carlson insisted.

The Russification of the Republican Party

President Reagan is rolling over in his grave. God bless his soul.

Russia is blessed with what America lacks: a strong single party system lead by an effective president-for-life.

If we cant be like Russia, maybe we should be Russia and become their vassal state.

Please tell me this is sarcasm.

We don't really know what Ronald Reagan would have thought of Putin. Not that it matters...

I think we can surmise what Reagan thought of the KGB....Putin was a KGB officer in E. Germany when the Berlin Wall came down...

Sen McConnel's refusal to take up "the DETER Act, a bipartisan bill that would impose sanctions on Russia if it interferes again in 2020"

Sen. Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) on Tuesday blocked an attempt by Democrats to pass legislation meant to prevent Russia and other countries from interfering in elections.

Crapo's move came after Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) asked for consent to pass the Defending Elections from Threats by Establishing Redlines, or DETER Act. Van Hollen argued the bill would underscore that there would be a "very tough price to pay" if Moscow meddles in U.S. elections.

Never had a chance of passing. Putin would have vetoed it.
