For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat."
These people have jobs. It is based on income level. Many in our country are below the poverty level. My sister, who made ends meet with SNAP had to raise 3 children on her own plus day care. Thank God for SNAP. I understand the changes are only for people without children however, poverty exists for them as well.
Be blessed.

EDIT: One may consider the condition of the homeless situation as a gauge before they consider reducing help to the poor. A better scriptural reference to ponder on.

Luke 16:19-31

The Rich Man and Lazarus

19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’
27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Government shouldn't be in the business of dispensing charity with tax money in the first place. Beyond that 2 Thess 3:10 is pretty clear on this matter.

Proverbs 14:31
Whoever oppresses a poor man insults his Maker, but he who is generous to the needy honors him.
Luke 16:19-31

19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

Be blessed.

If you read the guidelines? If they have jobs, and work at least 20 hours a week? They get their SNAP.

If they live in an area in which the jobs aren't available? They get their SNAP.

No one is saying poverty doesn't exist for any group.

I went to the government's website, and read it.

It's not that unreasonable.

Under long-standing rules, adults ages 18 to 49 who are "work eligible" and have no dependents can receive only three months of SNAP benefits during a three-year period if they do not meet the 20-hour-a-week work requirement.

States with high unemployment rates or a demonstrable lack of sufficient jobs, however, can waive those time limits.

So, in areas where the employment rates show there are jobs to be had? You need to work 20 hours to get your SNAP benefits. Otherwise if not, they extend the SNAP benefits.

Then you see this comment from the article:

Yet, the change doesn't begin until April. Since when is April the Christmas season? That's 4 months past the 'Christmas Season" has ended. Either he didn't read the announcement (which I don't believe), or he is being melodramatic for political reasons. I mean the man does know that April isn't the Christmas season right?
Few read those things, few have the attention span to. Remember Pelosi saying we have to vote in Obamacare to see what's in it? Sound bites and memes are what guide most people these days. And that is entirely scary.

Then go ahead and be generous. Expropriation is Satan's take on charity. It fosters corruption, greed, and makes holding office a matter of buying votes with other people's money.

The federal government doesn't even have the right to do this, per the writers of the Constitution. This stuff should be handled at the state level

It's not oppression to deny the poor the right to steal from others using the power of the state.

The United States government as an entity is not a Christian charity and therefore, nothing in the Bible applies to it.

The tenants of the Bible applies only to Christians, personally.

We should always give in charity from our personal excess - the mistake is forcing any government to do what is only an onus on your finances.. that - forcing others - will never count toward your account before God, it absolves you of nothing..

It's also important to take notice of the context of this verse rather than cherry-picking it out of context to "prove" that poor people shouldn't be given food (or refrigerators or anything else.) Many in the Thessalonian church had completely stopped living their normal lives because they believed that Jesus was returning at any moment and so they thought there was no point in doing anything. That's what Paul was disagreeing with, not writing a verse to use as ammunition against the poor in the 21st century.

The principle though is that you have to work, something God gave to us as part of the fall.

It's not a universal principle or else we would also have to work in order to earn our salvation, and that's not the case. Work is a gift, not a burden, and God gave it to us before the fall. "The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it." (Genesis 2:15) God also works and work is a part of our daily lives regardless of whether or not we are paid for it.

Just because someone doesn't have paid employment doesn't mean they aren't working or aren't participating in their lives in some productive way. Again, Paul was not intending what he wrote to be used as ammunition against poor people in the 21st century.

No, but he probably wrote it as ammunition against lazy people in the 21st century, which is why we want ABLE BODIED people with no dependents to support themselves so people that really need it can have it.

Nope, he wrote it tell the people in the Thessalonian church to get on with living their normal lives rather than putting everything on hold for Christ's second coming.

Just because someone doesn't have children doesn't mean they deserve to starve simply because they fell on hard times for a while.

2 Thessalonians 3:8 nor did we eat anyone's food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you.

How is this telling people to live their normal lives? It literally says the Apostles worked for what they ate. Also, it's fine to get help when you fall on hard times, but after 2 or 3 years, you should have figured out how to fix situation.

So, then, when someone turns 4 or 5 years old, they already "should have figured out how to fix situation" ? !

I would submit that Gen. 3:17-19 says the exact opposite about work. As a result of the fall, work isn't a blessing but a curse.

Beyond that, we aren't talking about salvation here we're talking about work here on Earth. We shouldn't confuse the two.
