Catholics have the "St. Michael the archangel" prayer, and I wasn't so sure about calling angels "saint", and about praying to them.

I know this particular prayer is only 100 years old or so, but my question is on the concept, not this particular one.

Are angels called "saints", and is it proper to pray to angels?

As usual - checking with the Orthodox as they are consistently more orthodox it seems.

Thanks ya'll!

I would assume so, given the existence of troparia written to archangels Michael and Gabriel:

It would be weird to have written troparia concerning those who are somehow not worthy of or allowed to receive intercessory prayers.

We do not pray to angels or worship them as if they were gods...we ask for their intercession. If I ask you to pray for me, it is the same thing.

That make more sense. I wonder about the St. Michael prayer we do as Catholics. It is asking for more than his intercession I'd say, in which case it may not be proper. It goes like this:

aint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.

I have paused with it, feeling it may go beyond intercession.

No you are asking for his help in an adverse situation. You are asking God to let Michael defend you against evil.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Funny - I am comfortable with the answer when it comes from the East, but in my own Catholic setting I feel constantly like I have to test everything.

Thank you for your perspective.

These were some of the more difficult things for me to understand coming from an Evangelical background. That said, it is a beautiful thing to know that God had given every single of us a guardian angel to protect us and to help us through our journey....all ordained by God for us and given to us by His power.

I’m still learning, but I’m thankful for God’s love and provision to us of all tools and assistance in our journey - which includes providing us all with angels to protect and guide us.

"Take heed that ye despise not ye of these little ones, for I say unto you, that their angels do always behold the face of My Father which is in heaven" (Matt 18:10).

Even churches in cities have their own angels! See Revelation the 7 churches in Asia

We ask angels (such as our guardian angel) to intercede for us and I think there are some other prayers addressed to angels as well.

Its important to remember that praying to someone is not indicating worship. If I call my mom and ask her to help me move into my new apartment then I'm technically praying to my mother, yet I'm obviously not worshiping her.

I heard that the idea of guardian angels is false. That it is simply created by the people. Is this true?

We believe verses such as (Matthew 18:10) and (Acts 12:15) are references to ones guardian angel.

I have said the Akathist to St. Michael the Archangel every night for a while now. St. Michael has been very good to me and those I love. He is a great protector of the servants of God! Glory to God!

I found this prayer to your guardian angel in an Orthodox prayer book and I like it a lot

O angel of God, my holy guardian, given to me from heaven, enlighten me this day, and save me from all evil. Instruct me in doing good deeds, and set me on the path of salvation. Amen.

we also pray for "an angel of peace, a faithful guide and guardian of our souls and bodies" at every Liturgy.
