I have recently been challenged over the question of our mandate to spread the good news to all the world, and whether some of us are active enough in meeting that mandate in our daily lives. But it occurs to me that so very little of what I have to offer anybody (from the point of view of being a Beleiver), is in fact good news.

To a secular world that dislikes and distrusts religion in any form, doubts the very existence of our God or any god and that just wants to get on with day to day life without any mumbo jumbo; what is good about the news that we have to offer?

Well concerning the topic of the title of the thread I really like this book.

Concerning the OP, there is another book that gets more at it.

QUOTE (Robert Webber, Ancient Future Faith)

"During my seminary education, I never felt we really addressed the question: “What does it mean to be a member of the church” Later, when I turned to the early Christian tradition and began, for the first time, to understand what it meant to be a member of the body of Christ, it was like removing blinders that had covered my eyes.
I learned from the early Fathers that the church is intrinsically connected with Christ and his victory over the power of evil. The church is therefore to be regarded as a kind of continuation of the presence of Jesus in the world. Jesus is not only seated at the right hand of the Father, but is visibly and tangibly present in and to the world through the church. This is an incarnational understanding of the church. It is a unique community of people in the world, a community like no other community because it is the presence of the divine in and to the world. This concept of the church has specific relevance to the world of postmodernism.
. . . What this means for the church is that Christians must recover the primacy of being a Christian community. . . .
. . . the church is the primary presence of God’s activity in the world. As we pay attention to what it means to be the church we create an alternative community to the society of the world. This new community, the embodied experience of God’s kingdom, will draw people into itself and nurture them in the faith. In this sense the church and its life in the world will become the new apologetic. People come to the faith not because they see the logic of the argument but because they have experienced a welcoming God in a hospitable and loving community. QUOTE

– Ancient-Future Faith, pp. 70-72"

In general we see a lot of alienation and social break down in society. Our social developments and technology while they have brought us many positive things have also made a lot of problems. But this problem, is an opportunity for churches. Because simple things like hospitality, community life etc. will generally be more appreciated by those outside of the Faith. In some ways, the job of witnessing has gotten easier because it can be done in a more natural way than the past (using various tracts etc.). This is the bright side of things.

The previous book deals with the more negative side, that we live in a PostChristian world and people are naturally more cynical. The author of Common ground compares Evangelism and sharing the Gospel in general to the Parable of the Sower. The ground is harder now than in previous times. Rather than expecting to plant a lot of seeds we should be more geared to till as far as dealing with that kind of cynicism. We need to earn the right to be heard in how we live our lives etc. There is a good chance that you will not see the results of witnessing and other kinds of seed planing, since in the post Christian era people will not be as ready for it as they were in days past (Some other Christian may reap what you have sowed).

What is the good news?

1 Corinthians 15:1-4
1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;

2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.

3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures

If people wish not to heed it, their choice.

Knowing your God is not good news? Man and God once had perfect union, it was taken away by the sinful act of Adam and Eve. Jesus Christ of Nazareth has restored that union to whoever wishes it by His work on the cross. This is the good news! The natural connection once lost has been restored! Amen!

mumbo jumbo
Mumbo jumbo?....I will pray for you.

18“If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’

One more thing. None of us are perfect! We "walk with the Holy Spirit" as best we can. If you are not seeing the fruits of the Holy Spirit then maybe consider not quenching Him. What is impossible for man is possible with God. This is why He gave us His Holy Spirit so that we can garner the fruit that it produces in our lives. So rather than sulk in your sin, repent and find your "First Love" again.
Be blessed.

I have read and studied all of the above. None of it gives me anything new to offer anybody.
I am not looking for theological understanding, an academic drill or even a mystical experience. I am looking for a testimony of the supernatural (that the writers of the Bible speak of ad infinitum) that will be something to testify to. As it is we cannot even get the basic social needs, that all people have in common, met.
Without a testimony of supernatural Love it is all just head knowledge.
So your view of the Gospel is social need? Tell that to the persecuted Christians who are beaten, jailed and murdered for the Hope they have in Christ Jesus.

I’m quite familiar with Liberation Theology being Jesuit educated. The theme is “we have to make Jesus relevant to our current societal needs and if we can’t then Jesus can’t help us.

That’s pretty much what you are telling me here in this thread. And that kind of understanding informs me you are having difficulty actually understanding and communicating the Gospel message.

God reveals Himself and communicates with mankind in His Holy Word. He tells us the Greatest Story ever. How we fallen humans dead in our sins and while we were still sinners Christ died for us. This is His Story of Love and everlasting life with Him.

In order to bring the justice your audience seeks, redemption must first occur. Without Redemption there is no Restoration.

Here’s the Story your audience should hear:

Creation

God
The story begins with God, who has always been. He has always existed, and He has always existed exactly as He is now. If it seems confusing, it’s because He’s beyond what anyone can fully comprehend.

Genesis 1:1 Psalm 90:2

Creation
In the beginning, God spoke and everything came into existence. By His command, the entire universe was created and filled with a dramatic display of galaxies, stars, and planets— including Earth, on which was a perfect garden of paradise called Eden. Of all the beauty He created, the masterpiece was a man and a woman. God made Adam and Eve in His image to reflect Him. They were created with the grand purpose of worshipping Him by loving Him, serving Him, and enjoying relationship with Him.

Harmony
By God’s design, all of creation was in harmony and was exactly the way it was supposed to be. During this time there was no pain, suffering, sickness or death. There was complete love, acceptance, and intimacy between God and man, between Adam and Eve, and throughout creation. But something tragic happened...

The Fall

Disobedience
Adam and Eve were far from being equal to God, yet He lovingly placed them in charge of all He had created in Eden. He gave them the freedom to make decisions and govern the earth with one rule: not to eat fruit from a specific tree. One day, God’s enemy, a fallen angel named Satan, wanted to overthrow God so he took the form of a serpent and lied to Adam and Eve. He deceived them into thinking God was not good and did not have their best interest in mind. As a result, they knowingly disobeyed God. In rebellion, Adam and Eve ate the fruit, deciding that they, not God, would determine right and wrong.

Consequence
The consequences of their actions were devastating! Like a virus, sin entered into all of creation and into the hearts of Adam and Eve. Sin, suffering, and pain were passed down from generation to generation; all of creation was distorted from its original design. We have all read or heard the stories of war, poverty, disease, greed, and scandals that plague our world today. Those are all a result of sin.

Romans 3:10 Romans 3:19

Need
When we think about the perfection and love that existed at the beginning of creation, we realize “we are far more flawed and far more sinful than we can dare imagine.” Just think of the grudges we’ve held, the lies we’ve told, the thoughts we’d never dare say aloud. An honest glance into our own hearts reveals the truth: We are all guilty. Everyone has sinned, and the ultimate consequence, even worse than physical death, is eternal separation from a loving God, in terrible misery and unhappiness. Because of all this, we need to consider the questions: Can anything be done? Is there any hope?

The Rescue

Promise made
God removed Adam and Eve from Eden as a result of their sin but left them with a promise of rescue and hope. He promised them one of their descendants would someday rescue mankind from sin. Over the next centuries, God prepared the way for this person who would become the Savior of the world. Exact details of His birth, life, and death were recorded in the Bible many centuries before His coming. In fact, the whole Bible ultimately points to this one person as the focal point of all human history. His purpose in coming was “to seek and to save what was lost” (Luke 19:10). So who was He?

Promise kept
The promised Savior, simply, was God. God became human in the person of Jesus Christ almost 2,000 years ago, fulfilling all the predictions in the Old Testament. Jesus’ birth was miraculous since His mother was a virgin. His life was unique: He perfectly enjoyed and obeyed God without sin. This ultimately led to His agonizing death on a cross as He willingly, obediently, and sufficiently died to pay for the sins of mankind, according to God’s plan. In the greatest display of mercy and grace the world has ever known, Jesus’ life and death became a substitute for all who would trust in Him. The perfectly innocent died to rescue the hopelessly guilty from sin and Satan.

But the grave couldn’t hold Jesus. Three days later, Jesus emerged from His tomb, fulfilling His earthly mission to defeat sin by dying on the cross and to defeat death by rising from the dead—just as God promised. Forty days later He returned to Heaven where He reigns as the rightful King.

But the story doesn’t end there...

1 Peter 3:18 Galatians 1:4

The Restoration

All Things New
For all those who trust in Jesus alone, God has also promised He will make all things new. The new heaven and new earth will be completely free of sin and selfishness—a place of perfect friendship with God, others, and all creation. No more shattering earthquakes, devastating tsunamis or violent storms will plague the earth. No more pain, broken hearts, sickness or death to trouble us.

Everything will be restored to the way it was meant to be. The new earth will once again be the perfect home God intended for His creation. God’s original purpose will flourish, as those who trust in His rescue will enter into the grand purpose of worshipping Him by loving Him, serving Him, and enjoying relationship with Him forever.

Revelation 21:4

Forever with God
The most wonderful part of this new world is that we will be with God forever, experiencing complete joy. We will be restored to a perfect relationship with the One who created, loved, and died for us. C. S. Lewis, scholar and children’s author, compared the first step into this new world as “Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.”

Rescue by Faith Alone
Faith is simple trust in Jesus Christ alone to save you. It means instead of believing you can rescue yourself from the consequences of sin, you transfer your trust to the rescue He purchased for you by His death. Your allegiance is now to Jesus, The King. Those who place their trust in anything other than Jesus will find themselves forever separated from the loving God who gave His one and only Son to set us free from the bondage of sin. This painful separation is called Hell.

Ephesians 2:8–9

The Response is what gets it all started.

I have been at that point for most of my life and known that just preaching the Gospel at people is a waste of breath, not to mention extremely destructive to a captive community of people.
What does frustrate me though is that as concession people have encouraged me to display the gospel with my life.

Unfortunately this also has been a failure, my life has been absolutely nothing of any use as far as attracting people to the Gospel. Why would anybody want to take on something that consigns a person to years of loneliness and rejection (at the hands of the so called Loving Family of God), followed by screwed up marriages and more loneliness and rejection? I speak of myself but also quite a number of other people I know.

Where is the testimony that Christ spoke of that we would be known by our Love for one another?
I have prayed for you brother. It seems from the above you are caught in a cycle of despair. The only way to break such a cycle is return to your first Love Jesus Christ and the Cross. When we hit rock bottom as children of God that Rock we are laying on is Christ. Seeing Christ at your side looking at your challenges is where you need to be. Not Jesus on the other side of the room with your challenges between you and Him. As a believer He has already conquered your sin and sorrow. Call upon Him and He will be faithful and true.

In Revelation chapter 2 we see this to the church at Ephesus:

Revelation 2: NASB

1“To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:
The One who holds the seven stars in His right hand, the One who walks among the seven golden lampstands, says this:

2‘I know your deeds and your toil and perseverance, and that you cannot tolerate evil men, and you put to the test those who call themselves apostles, and they are not, and you found them to be false; 3and you have perseverance and have endured for My name’s sake, and have not grown weary. 4‘But I have this against you, that you have left your first love.5‘Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place—unless you repent. 6‘Yet this you do have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. 7‘He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will grant to eat of the tree of life which is in the Paradise of God.’

Return to your First Love, Jesus Christ. Go back to the Cross and Empty Tomb where your First Love laid down His life for you and then took it up again by rising from the dead.

I think it was St John Chrysostom who said:

“The Church is a hospital, and not a courtroom, for souls. She does not condemn on behalf of sins, but grants remission of sins.“

Sick people are in hospitals. We should not be surprised to be among fellow “sick” brethren in our churches.

What counter culture? There is a whole lot of talk about a Kingdom of Love but the reality is that to the secular people, at least, it is no where to be seen.
Of course it is not seen. Ours is the counter-culture to the Kingdom. Ours is the culture of self interest and oppression. It is the world WE made when cast out of the Garden which was Kingdom v:1.0.
The slaves, servants and women flocked to Jesus' Gospel of the Kingdom as it offered them hope of a way out and a future, and it showed them how to live in ways that would counteract the traditional ways of man. Selfless vs selfish. Servitude over being served.

Jesus gave us a way of life, not a religion. Religions are man's thing.
I agree, so where is this way of life? Where is the supernatural intervention of a Loving God for His children. He says that if we ask for a fish He won't give us a snake. I have been praying for that fish for over 30 years and needed it for 9 years before that. All I have received is not the fish.

Yes he did say those things. The word "gospel" means "good news". So what good news can we bring? If a person has had a bad run at the hands of religious people and is skeptical of the hand of a Loving God within the Church, or even on the Earth in general; what good news can I give them?

The slaves, servants and women flocked to Jesus' Gospel of the Kingdom as it offered them hope of a way out and a future, and it showed them how to live in ways that would counteract the traditional ways of man. Selfless vs selfish. Servitude over being served.
Nice, so where is it? I have lived like this and continue to aspire to it, laying down my life for my family and the people that come into my life. It has cost me friends and it contributed to the breakdown of my marriage, not to mention the financial cost. But I seem to be alone in that. Now that I have been kicked in the teeth that aloneness is ever more apparent. Where is the hospital when I need it? Where is the help? Where is the Loving community?
