O'Malley was deathly ill and was sequestered in a small room in the attic to recover. His drinking buddies squeezed through the small door, equipped with a plentiful supply of whiskey, to cheer him up. After several hours of drinking they stumbled out through the narrow exit with words of encouragement,

"Ya'll be up in nootime O'Malley", and "We'll see ya doon at the tavern soon, O'Malley.

The last man, bumping his head on the low door frame muttered,

"Thay'll naver get the coffin through the door."

Obviously by your own testimony you have started drinking alcohol. The question is, can you stop it ? Don't deceive yourself, you either drink alcohol or you don't drink alcohol.

What constitutes having "started drinking alcohol"? I first had it while in Africa at age 10. Gin and tonic have historically been used to treat malarial infections because it contains quinine. I didn't actually have malaria but it was served quite routinely, even to children as a precaution.

When I was an infant I contracted chickenpox and it caused sepsis that was absolutely savage, permanently harming much of my body, including my stomach. My vagus nerve was damaged. Sometimes alcohol is actually soothing to me. Other times it feels like I have a dragon living in my stomach and I've enraged it. But it gets angered by coffee, orange juice, and a bunch of other things too, unfortunately. So yeah, I can definitely stop drinking alcohol since I never actually incorporated it into my life anyways.

I've never really started drinking so it's not something that I have to put effort into giving it up. I have to be careful because a thimble full will make me tipsy. My dad collects tequila, they do come in amazing bottles but they taste like torture to me. The only alcohol I actually like are ones that don't taste like alcohol at all, but then you discover that they pack a punch after you already feel knocked out. I'm amazed you've never been drunk in the whole of your life! Wow. I have most of my life ahead of me and I've already had that happen, unintentionally. The only positive is that I'm fairly certain I'll never develop a habit because it scares me to lose control.

I do understand the challenge of giving up something you used to enjoy. I had to cut out coffee this year and it was seriously difficult.

Tequila can be pretty dang expensive. Lol I like that your dad collects that instead of wine which is more typical.

The alcohol probably hits you so hard on account of you being so thin. From the vids / pics you've shared I think my pinkie finger is heavier than all of you, lol. Jk. You look fit & fine but weight really is a big factor in how alcohol impacts you.

Do y'all have much of a "drinking culture" at Stanford? I don't like the term but well it's the one most used, lol.

I hasten to add I have never been drunk in the whole of my life. I used to drink in strict moderation and well within the recommended guidelines of what one should drink weekly. However, I used to take statins for a very high familial cholesterol level, which were damaging my liver, I was taken off them by my doctor. Although it was never suggested I should give up drinking, I decided it would be best if I did. I haven't missed alcohol one little bit, but I will probably have a small glass of wine on special occasions like Christmas Day.

Have other posters given up drinking alcohol?
Why is Christmas day a special occasion? (What happened on that day exactly) As for giving up drinking, I don't think that's possible for me.

Santa Claus pays a visit on Christmas Day.

Maybe you should consider trying to give up drinking, if you are addicted to alcohol.

I really like moderate drinking.

I'm in a couple bands with some complete non-drinkers tho, and have developed a healthy habit of not drinking at shows, or maybe having one beer toward the second half of the night. Any more than one drink and I notice a subtle dip in my performance.

O'Reilly would stumble drunkenly into the boarding house every night waking everyone up as he noisily got sick in the bathroom.
Fed up with this the other residents filled the toilet with chicken intestines in hopes of shocking him into sobriety.

The next morning O' Reilly appeared at the breakfast table pale and sullen.

"I've a confession to make", he offered. "Last night I came home in me oosual drunken state, but this time I was so drunk that I puked me guts up into the toilet."

After a long moment of silence his face brightened and he exclaimed,

"But with the halp 'O the Lord, and a long handled stick, I FINALLY POKED 'EM BACK DOON AGAIN."

I've had two drinks of alcohol my whole life and I am 52. One was a wine cooler and the other was a beer. I took a couple of sips of the beer and poured the rest out and never drank it again. That was 31 years ago

I would likely no sooner give up alcohol than I would
coffee.

However, I'm trying to establish a routine whereby I have
my traditional evening wine just a couple nights a week,
and kava tea the rest of the week.

People who want to quit alcohol entirely will sometimes
use kava in its place, as it has the same benefits of
calming the mind but still retaining good judgment and
functionality and the ability to operate heavy machinery. I
usually drink the Yogi brand's version of the tea. Good
stuff!!

(Disclaimer: Whenever I speak of kava, I like to add the
disclaimer that kava shouldn't be mixed with alcohol
because it's way too hard on the liver (the liver would
probably get right up and walk out of your house,
screaming obscenities all the way ), and it doesn't play
well with certain medications, so check with your doctor
before giving it a go.)

There's only one occasion every year I celebrate. (New year's day) That's it, not even my birthday is anything anymore :D

I can see a wine cooler turning one off drinking for life.
