Non-Christian here.

I'm an Agnostic interested in good discussion. What I'm hoping for is to understand Christians (yes I know there's lots of varieties) a little bit better and to be made to think.

Thanks for having me.

Hi, nice to have you here.

I hope you find this to be a place of learning.

Christians are those who have faith in Jesus Christ. Christianity is a religion based upon faith. I personally am Lutheran. I believe in the solas of the reformation; that is Grace Alone, Faith Alone, Scripture Alone, etc. As a Lutheran the word of God is very important to me. Ultimately my faith is in the gospel, that is the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

I am here to answer any questions you may have.

God Bless you!

Hello, Doubting Brutus! I just joined the forum and am delighted to see your message. A prophet named Isaiah wrote, “‘Come now, let us reason together,’ says the Lord.” You need not check your brain at the door to become a Christian - quite the opposite! You will find the Bible provides good reasons for what you see in the world. Despite what evolution claims, you are no chance of fate. You were made with a purpose by someone who deeply loves you!

God explains himself and his plans for mankind, and gave many prophecies to prove he is who he claims to be: the Creator and Lord. Just one quick example... Download a Bible app and take a look at the 23rd chapter of the book of Jeremiah, in verses 7 and 7 (i.e., Jeremiah 23:7-8). You will see a prophecy that says Israel would be reborn as a nation, written thousands of years before it happened on May 14, 1948. Never before has a people kept their national identity and been reborn after such a long time!

If you would like to understand Christianity, please start reading the Bible. I recommend starting with the book of John. And please feel free to ask questions!!! Do not believe anything anyone tells you unless they can back up their beliefs with scripture. My nickname for this forum (Berean_Christian) comes from Acts 17:11 where it says the people in Berea received the message with great eagerness, but examined the Scriptures every day to see if what they had been told was true.

It will be a joy helping you understand who we are - and more importantly, helping you understand who you are and who God is! Welcome!

Thank you for the warm welcome.

Its important for me to say up front that I am not a blank slate (who is?). I come here with my own thoughts, beliefs, assumptions, experiences and biases. I'm not new to the ideas of Christianity (I'm from England, so its kind of culturally ingrained) but it recently dawned on me that apart from when I was a child and too young to understand I've never really had a chat with a Christian. I've never been able to ask questions or have my own beliefs challenged. Its what I'm hoping I find here.

welcome to CF. What is it you want to understand about Christians?

Hmmm. Huge question. In general why you believe and I don't. I don't mean in a neurological sense. I mean it in an intellectual sense. I'm fascinated by the phenomenon of subjectivity. Where two people can look at the same thing and come to two radically different conclusions. I've read the NT and it didn't undermine or alter my beliefs or perceptions. I find that curious and fascinating.

Is there a more suitable forum or thread where I can unpack this? It feels a bit weird doing it in the Welcome thread.

So... my first foray into the forum did not go so well. I was raked over the coals by the mods for being in the wrong place, talking about the wrong things and talking about them in the wrong way.

I was advised to check out the philosophy and debate forums if I didn't want to get banned but both appear to not only be read only but to have been read only for a long, long time.

Is there anywhere that Christians and seeking agnostics can actually have conversations on here?

I'm sorry about my tone in the previous post, I'm just more than a little annoyed. We were having such a great conversation. Thoughtful, respectful and, I felt, very honest and candid. I'm really disappointed that the thread was lost and not really sure if I'm being asked in a round about way to get lost by the mods.

Hello again Brutus,

As far as I know, you could potentially post in several areas.

Thanks for the reply. Could you suggest an active forum where the conversation we were having could be continued?

Yes, it would be the Christian Apologetics forum in the 'Outreach' section. However, unlike the other several areas you could post in right now, you have to 'earn' your way into participation in that specific forum.

So, you have some options open to you.

Welcome to CF. Sorry to see that your thread got closed. It's not your fault that Christians started arguing with each other within it.

That said, breaching a topic such as homosexuality is a tricky maneuver due to the fact that it will often cause Christians to argue with each other, and they are only allowed to do that in the parts of the forum that you, as a non-Christian, are not allowed into. One of the places where it may be do-able would be "The Kitchen Sink," since there are fewer rules there. (That said, keep in mind that there is a side-wide rule against promoting homosexuality, same-sex marriage, etc.)
