"Religious freedom for me, but none for thee!" seems to be a common belief among many right wing Christians. Remember when all those conservative Christians threw a fit about the Satan statutes?

And they're still throwing a fit about them every time one of them goes up!

DAY OF THE DEAD – DIA DE LOS MUERTOS, A Celebration of Lives

In front of her was a rather simple yet colorful altar complete with her husband’s pack of unfinished Marlboro’s, a can of his favorite Tecate beer, photos of his rugged mastached face, the ubiquitous orange marigolds, his small plastic comb, frayed photos of his parents with him as a child on a far-away ranch in Mexico, a plate of carne asada, votive candles, a glass of water, paper banners and brightly painted sugar skulls ghoulishly mixed into the display.

Day of the Dead Altars will be displayed Friday Nov. 2 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., in the former Ocotillo Shop next to the Fudge Factory. Mexican folk dancers will perform from the Elementary School and Miss Borrego, Dennise Cecena will sing. Special food items from Pablitos will be on sale and water will be available.

For more information, please call Borrego Springs Unified School District Community Liasion Martha Deichler at 619-948-5900.

We go to Borrego Springs often and know Martha and it is sad to say that their elementary school is giving honor to this so called holiday.

This sort of thing is why we homeschool. Too many people will complain yet do nothing about it, including parents who use these schools.

It is like Halloween. There were images of graveyards, cemeteries, skeletons, ghosts, etc. Perhaps Halloween has been overdone too. Some schools are moving away from Halloween celebrations.
Schools are canceling Halloween celebrations — and some parents call it ‘ridiculous’

We do a Day of the Dead stuff in our middle school’s Spanish class. I helped out with it the year before last. Kids who wanted to participate did, kids who didn’t or who’s parents asked them to be excluded were. Problem solved.

If Christians were wise they would stop sending their kids to godless government schools. It's amazing the excuses believers will make for sending their minor kids to get indoctrinated by Satan for 7 hours a day. Beyond that, the church needs to do a better job of providing Christian education to the children of believers. In the last half century, nearly every denomination has given up on or substantially reduced christian education. The results are unsurprising, the children of believers leave the church in droves.

Question: "What is the Day of the Dead?"

Answer:
The Day of the Dead is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Latin Americans living in the United States and Canada. The holiday occurs in connection with the Catholic holidays that fall on November 1 and 2, All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. On the Day of the Dead, more accurately called the "cult of the dead,” friends and family members of those who have died gather together to pray for them and bring to their graves the deceased’s favorite foods, often including the traditional “sugar skulls” and the “bread of death.” Private altars honoring the deceased are created, and homage is given to them. Origins of the holiday have been traced back thousands of years to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl.

Although many of those who celebrate the Day of the Dead call themselves Christians, there is nothing Christian about such practices. The celebration of the Day of the Dead by pagans is one thing, but for Christians to participate in or condone it is unbiblical, to say the least. We offer this answer in a spirit of gentleness and respect, praying that it may warn others and equip Christians, so that they may be able to reply to those without hope and without Christ in the world (Ephesians 2:12), when they ask us to give a reason for the hope that is within us (1 Peter 3:15).

You probably missed the part regarding tax payers dollars?
Understandable.
They don't put up Christmas trees in classrooms anymore do they?
But, this is ok -- right?
M-Bob
In my town they do put up Christmas trees and other Christmas decorations. Hannukah, also. Maybe it's just a problem where you live.

Public schools don't indoctrinate anyone, much less "for Satan". That's a fantasy world. It's amazing to me that people think that way. The vast majority of people in my Church are able to raise really good Christian kids while sending them through the public school system. Having been through both Christian and public school myself, I know first-hand how much better public school can be than a Christian school. Usually the only decent Christian schools are a select few Catholic schools. Protestant Christian ones like the one I went to don't really care about academics, especially today.

If a parent can't send a kid to public school without him becoming "indoctrinated for Satan" then it's actually the fault of the parent, not the school, plain and simple.

That is a reasonable solution to the issue instead of some Christians complaining about non-Christian holidays being celebrated in secular public schools. If they don't like the holiday, then they have a choice not to participate in it. They should go their own way and mind their own business, IMO.

Yes. In the public schools. In fact, I just spent the weekend hosting my high school friends here in Manhattan and one of them is a high school teacher in the towns neighboring the one we all grew up in. He just went in costume for Halloween and he was talking about how they are prepping with Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations together because Thanksgiving is so late this year. They also had some kind of observance of Diwali (hindu holiday) and most definitely they have hannukah decorations as well. In the public high school. And his wife teaches in the public elementary school in the town we grew up in where they do the same.

Why do you think this is somehow illegal or something?

Government schools celebrate homosexuality, they push an anti-Christian worldview. I agree that a lot of Christian schools don't do a good job with academics, my kids school is an outlier in that it has excellent academics. The broader problem is on the church for not supporting good Christian education.

Beyond that, there is no such thing as neutrality. Your kids are either in class receiving a Christ centered education or they're not. In government schools we all know they're not receiving a Christ centered education.

I don't get it. We celebrated Day of the Dead in my (majority Hispanic) public elementary school, and that was over 30 years ago. Nobody complained about it then, and America was much more Christian by self-identification then than it is now. (Including all the people who celebrated Day of the Dead, since they were all Catholics. Go figure.)

I think this has a lot more do with a feeling from Evangelical Protestants that they've lost their former politically dominant position in society than with anything religious, since again, Christians can and do observe this holiday. You may not think they're very good Christians for doing so, but I can't think of anything that should matter less to what should get taught in public schools.

I'm sorry you can't just complain to the school district and get your way now or whatever. I mean...not really...it didn't work for the Baptists when I was a kid with regard to Halloween, and it's probably not going to work now with regard to this. Maybe learn to pick your battles a bit better, or actually teach your own kids what you want them to learn if the school isn't doing that.

Government schools are secular. If they "celebrate homosexuality" it's because the world does. Eventually your kids are going to have to deal with that. If they deal with it in the public school, so be it. So what? How is this a problem any more than the rest of the world is a problem?

If you're a good parent and raised your kids to be Christians then what's the problem? You can't seem to state what the problem is. Who said anything about "neutrality"? The point is that we all live in the world, and public schools are part of that.

Question: If your kid got a job at Apple, or Microsoft, or IBM, or Exxon, or any other major corporation would you forbid them from going there to work and insist they work for a Christian company? I bet when it comes to $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ you will let your kids do just about anything, but feel free to set me straight on that with your response.

I’m ok with that. I don’t want my kids not learning in school because some fear knowledge. It’s all very weird.

You may not think they're very good Christians for doing so, but I can't think of anything that should matter less to what should get taught in public schools.

It is about evangelical protestants pushing back because they are losing their politically dominant position and influence in our country. I think that's one of the reasons why so many of them have flocked to Trump because he panders to them and woos them. Evangelical Christians have had their own way in this country for so long and have controlled what is acceptable in our society to such an extent that they have been able to impose their own political agendas with little to no challenge.

But these evangelical Christians have been losing substantial political ground in the last few years with the rapidly changing racial demographics, the push for LGBT rights and equality, and the rise of non-Christian religions and liberalism. I think these Christians feel threatened that their political power and influence in society is being challenged and their dominant influence is being dismissed. We see that growing fear manifested now in the complaint about the Day of the Dead celebration in a public school and in the complaint about 'godless' secular public schools pushing an anti-Christian worldview.

The problem is that I want to control the narrative for my young kids when it comes to homosexuality. I don't want the world dictating what they learn and when they learn it.

Beyond that there's no such thing as a secular world that's neutral and plays all sides fairly. There is the Christian world and then there's Satan's world. There is nothing in between. It's frankly shocking that Christians think there is a middle ground, one in which they can save a few dollars and have their kids schooled in.
