Why is it if you have an answering machine, and you listen to your messages... (like me, you listen probably in order to delete them all as rapidly as you can, but listen for a few seconds to each just in case someone you know called)
...and in the last year, you hear a rapidly increasing barrage of phone scammers calling people at random, trying to defraud Americans.
That's lawless. And you know there are older people out there getting robbed, over the phone.
Criminals using phones are increasingly operating freely without fear of the law.

Every year, millions of you tell us – and our partners – about the frauds you spotted. Last year, we heard from 3 million of you, and here’s some of what we learned from your reports:
- We collected more than 1.4 million fraud reports, and people said they lost money to the fraud in 25% of those reports. People reported losing $1.48 billion (with a ‘b’) to fraud last year – an increase of 38% over 2017.
