Ive read statistics in the past that Americans are among the most generous (personal Charity) givers in the world. But my European wife reminds me the higher taxes is socialist countries are redistributed to poorer people, which is a form of charity, which can make some disinclined to donate.

If paying taxes is a form of charity then at best
it is the lowest form of charity.

In this case, Trump supporters seem to be the champions with respect to hurt feelings and revisionist historians.

Is there a law that says "revisionist historians" are wrong?

A week ago I would have argued with the OP (I've been blessed to live and visit in Western Europe and traveled a lot) but I just got back from a weeks vacation in Zion National Park in Utah. Now I'm a changed man. 'USA USA USA:musicalscore:.' :) America rocks if you don't get sick before age 65 and if you aren't underemployed. There are really several Americas (for the rich, middle class (shrinking rapidly they say,) and poor) and we all live next to each other but experience the country quite differently.

Yes, I agree America has National Parks with the best rocks : ) (Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, etc)

LOL! There's a law that says that sometimes they're wrong. :) In this case I was thinking of notorious right-wing hacks like David Barton and Dinesh D'Souza.

Your political system is not free and democratic. Your political candidates seems to be heavily biased towards the wealthy.

I once read that you cannot be president unless you have huge financial backers.

In the 2016 campaign, eventual winner Republican Donald Trump and runner-up Democratic nominee Hilary Clinton spent a combined $1.16 billion; including all other candidates, a total of $2.4 billion was spent.
(investopedia)

That kind of financial support must be paid back by the successful winners. In the form of Government contracts and legislation. So governments decisions are obviously skewed towards to these financial supporters.

More than likely the American political system is deeply corrupt.

All I can say at this moment is that if we Canadians had been more well informed between 1750 to 1783 America could have been even more free and even more prosperous.

My attempt here at an apology is no joke......

We Canadians like to think of ourselves as good allies to our neighbours to the south but wow..... we were so under informed as to what was really going on during the time of the American Revolutionary War!!!!!

Do we Canadians owe America an apology for 1750 - 1783?

Alain Pilote:
We are in 1750. The United States of America does not yet exist; it is the 13 Colonies of the American continent, forming "New England", a possession of the motherland, England. Benjamin Franklin wrote about the population of that time: "Impossible to find a happier and more prosperous population on all the surface of the globe." Going over to England to represent the interests of the Colonies, Franklin was asked how he accounted for the prosperous conditions prevailing in the Colonies, while poverty was rife in the motherland:

"That is simple," Franklin replied. "In the Colonies we issue our own money. It is called Colonial Scrip. We issue it in proper proportion to make the products pass easily from the producers to the consumers. In this manner, creating ourselves our own paper money, we control its purchasing power, and we have no interest to pay to no one."

The English bankers, being informed of that, had a law passed by the British Parliament prohibiting the Colonies from issuing their own money, and ordering them to use only the gold or silver debt-money that was provided in insufficient quantity by the English bankers. The circulating medium of exchange was thus reduced by half.

"In one year," Franklin stated, "the conditions were so reversed that the era of prosperity ended, and a depression set in, to such an extent that the streets of the Colonies were filled with unemployed."

Then the Revolutionary War was launched against England, and was followed by the Declaration of Independence in 1776. History textbooks erroneously teach that it was the tax on tea that triggered the American Revolution. But Franklin clearly stated:

"The Colonies would gladly have borne the little tax on tea and other matters, had it not been the poverty caused by the bad influence of the English bankers on the Parliament: which has caused in the Colonies hatred of England, and the Revolutionary War."

The Founding Fathers of the United States, bearing all these facts in mind, and to protect themselves against the exploitation of the International Bankers, took good care to expressly declare, in the American Constitution, signed at Philadelphia in 1787, Article 1, Section 8, paragraph 5:

"Congress shall have the power to coin money and to regulate the value thereof."

But people are free to climb our rocks…

Groan.

Even in America, I believe there are laws to do with trespassing on land. Consider the climbing ban on Uluru a prevention of trespass on a site sacred to the land's traditional owners.

There are plenty of rocks you can climb here.

The idea that there is one “best” country seems naive to me. No one country is beat at everything, and people have different ideas of what is important to be best at. Plus people def not even agree what qualities would make a country the “best.”

Narcissism is a bad quality for a person, and for a country as well.

I wouldn’t say that the United States (America includes Canada, Mexico, and a bunch of other countries) is the best country, the most prosperous, or the most free country on earth. There are other countries that have better health care, more prosperity, somewhat better freedoms, but taken as a whole, there is no other place that I would rather live.

I spent 26 years in the Armed Forces defending the country and had the opportunity to live in several countries, Panama, Columbia, Hong Kong (during UK control), South Korea, Japan, Australia, Germany, United Kingdom, Israel, and United Arab Emirates. I am not counting Cuba, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, or Saudi Arabia because they were on strictly military bases and had little normal interaction with the civilian population nor am I counting countries that I just visited for a few days.

Funny story, in 1996 the Australian Army came to a base I was stationed at in California; they came to get mountain training in the Sierra Nevada mountains. They were from Toowoomba, the town where my Mother grew up. I had a great time with them. There was another poster here from Brisbane but haven’t seen him around.

Hmm. There are a few other folks from Queensland around, but I can't immediately recall another from Brisbane.

It is Tanj, and he is still around.
