The flaming rule is this:
Flaming and Goading
  • Please treat all members with respect and courtesy through civil dialogue.
  • Do not personally attack (insult, belittle, mock, ridicule) other members or groups of members on CF. Address only the content of the post and not the poster.
  • NO Goading. This includes images, cartoons, smileys or post ratings which are clearly meant to goad. Quoting and then editing another members post to change the original meaning, commonly referred to as "fixed it for you" (FIFY), is considered goading.
  • "Calling out" a member is an unsolicited comment about another member in reference to something they may have said, their personal beliefs, their signature, or their avatar (challenging the member in a negative manner). This applies to any thread, whether the called out member is participating in that thread or not. Do not quote, or make comments about another member, in your signature or user title.
  • Offensive derogatory nicknames and egregious inflammatory comments about public figures may be considered goading.
  • Stating or implying that another Christian member, or group of members, are not Christian is not allowed.
  • If you are flamed, do not respond in-kind. Alert staff to the situation by utilizing the report button.
It is not mentioned in the Statement of Purpose. The problem with sarcasm is that it can be really mean and goading. So it is the flaming rule that comes into play and not a specific rule about sarcasm.

Then I was mistaken and if not for the rules people might just call me a liar because I posted something that was not entirely true.

No, just an error.

I think you may have missed the point. We do not want people to call each other liars. That is flaming. "mistaken' or 'confused about it' (our rules get complicated) is fine.

Question!

What if someone starts a thread with a misleading or outright incorrect title? It can be refuted a dozen times over in the actual thread but it's still the first thing people see and sets the tone of the discussion on false pretenses.

You can report the OP and we will look at it.

But it's not against the rules, nor is pushing that same falsehood in subsequent comments.

There's long been an issue around here of folks being disingenuous and/or pushing ideas that have been debunked repeatedly. It's died down somewhat mostly on account of some of the worst offenders no longer being active, but it's still a thing. I would argue that that dishonesty is just as improper, unchristian, and disruptive as labeling someone a liar. I can appreciate that that sort of thing can be hard to police because the line between misguided opinion and careless or deliberate falsehood can be a fuzzy one, but in the 7+ years I've been here, I've never gotten the impression that the staff has even been interested in trying. IMO, it erodes the quality of the discussion and community way more than name calling does.

As an aside, one thing that would be really nice is some kind of feedback regarding the status of reports that we've filed. That can help clarify to the rest of us where the lines are and aren't. Something as simple as a message saying "This report ticket was opened" and then a follow up saying "This post was determined to (not) be in violation because xxxxx".

For those who are unaware, FreeinChrist and I are the Advisors over the Discussion & Debate areas. It works out well since I’m more conservative and she is more liberal. It helps us to keep natural biases from creeping in, and helps us to address the issue when folks from both sides accuse staff of bias.

With that said, we are firmly into the next election cycle. Plus, we have the impeachment inquiry happening. And we are starting to see an increase of inflammatory posts. Let me explain how staff sees this.

If you flame another member, it’s seen as flaming or goading. If you flame a well-known public figure, it’s considered goading because while they aren’t members, they have loyal followers, and it’s seen as an attack on them that they feel needs defending. You can be critical of public figures without inflammatory comments.

So here is how this will go in the coming months.

Please keep debating. We aren’t trying to dictate what cannot be posted or discussed as long as it falls within the current rules. But we will be quicker with warnings and thread closures. In other words, whatever we have to do to keep the level of civility as high as possible we will be doing.

We have a small staff which doesn’t need to be overburdened because some of you cannot seem to be able to debate without getting little digs in. We are a little more lax on Discussion & Debate, but we also don’t want things to spin out of control.

For those who are willing to cooperate, thanks.
Is there an option to hide or ignore certain forums the way you can with users? The idea being you wouldn't see threads posted under that forum in "new threads" or "new posts" and things like that.

That happened when I ignored the OP of a thread.

I think you missed some of the posters that have expressed the opinion that being expected to only say someone is mistaken or confused or wrong is not enough for them. They want to be able to call people liars.

Unfortunately, there isn’t.

It has always been against the rules to call other members names like liars.

That is not going to change.
