Everyone may be a liar to some degree or another, but not everyone is president or running for president.

Have fun with the new rules, guys. :|
It’s not a new rule.

Posters are defending a figure that is demonstrably uncivil. Not a few rare instances of incivility, but almost a daily occurence through tweets. If Richard Spencer himself was posting here, how civil do you really think the discussion could be? And when other posters start defending the awful things he would say, why would they deserve civility?
If Richard Spencer himself (or any other public figure) were posting here, he would be obliged to follow the rules like everybody else, or he won’t be allowed to continue to post here.

And it’s not a matter of whether people “deserve” civility. Civility is the rule whether or not anybody deserves it.

Advisors may correct any of the above if I’m wrong.

This is after all a Christian Forum and the whole idea behind Grace is that we do not get what we deserve but get much better than we deserve.

I’m not going to make you act in any certain way. We are just explaining what’s going to happen.
Rules are defacto made to make people act a certain way. Posters support a habitual rule breaker according to forum rules, so good luck modding the squaring of that circle.

If Trump himself posted here, I don't think the mods would treat him the same as the rest of us. The backlash if Trump was banned here would be immense.

Locks keep honest people honest. Rules function similarly. ;)

I doubt he’d make it a week.

Just a suggestion ( particularly as someone who has been on staff) may be a good idea to sticky this thread just to prevent it from getting lost ( particularly as more threads begin to be posted.

I suggest that in politics the norm is to tell untruths.

Maybe that does happen a lot, but this is a Christian forum, so there is no excuse for making it normal for us to lie about politics. If you make a false statement, it better be based on not knowing the facts.

Trump himself doesn’t post here, and neither does Spencer for that matter. I suggest we not muddy the waters with “what about” and discuss the topic at hand. Flaming and what’s to be done about it.

People who don’t like the rules at CF have choices. Nobody is being made to do anything. Options are 1. Abide by the rules as stated. 2. Use proper channels to politely make suggestions, while still following the existing rule until and unless it changes. 3. Persistently refuse to comply with the rules, facing the resulting consequences. 4. Possibly begin your own site, where you make the rules.

Nobody is forcing anybody to choose option #1.

I don't argue with that. This is why I would not call another poster a liar as I could never say for a fact that the person did not believe that what he/she was posting was untrue or if that person did not know it was untrue.

You have that backwards. Rules are designed to prevent us from acting a certain way.

Rules are made to keep order. By knowing what the rules are one can avoid acting in certain ways that are against the rules. If one is willing to cooperate and peacefully coexist and exchange opinions with others that may or may not agree with one on a number of issues having rules is helpful. If one is simply interested in demonizing , degrading, defaming or engaging in a monologue with the hope of vanquishing one's opposition through invective, shaming or mocking them then rules are an impediment.

This might be off topic but I have to say it anyway: Try to avoid being sarcastic in debate threads. People on and off the autism spectrum have been confused about whether somebody was serious or not. This, of course, is one reason posters are thought to be liars and flaming occurs.

I think the rules actually do say that sarcasm is supposed to be labelled as such by the poster to avoid such confusion.

The flaming rule is this:
Flaming and Goading
  • Please treat all members with respect and courtesy through civil dialogue.
  • Do not personally attack (insult, belittle, mock, ridicule) other members or groups of members on CF. Address only the content of the post and not the poster.
  • NO Goading. This includes images, cartoons, smileys or post ratings which are clearly meant to goad. Quoting and then editing another members post to change the original meaning, commonly referred to as "fixed it for you" (FIFY), is considered goading.
  • "Calling out" a member is an unsolicited comment about another member in reference to something they may have said, their personal beliefs, their signature, or their avatar (challenging the member in a negative manner). This applies to any thread, whether the called out member is participating in that thread or not. Do not quote, or make comments about another member, in your signature or user title.
  • Offensive derogatory nicknames and egregious inflammatory comments about public figures may be considered goading.
  • Stating or implying that another Christian member, or group of members, are not Christian is not allowed.
  • If you are flamed, do not respond in-kind. Alert staff to the situation by utilizing the report button.
It is not mentioned in the Statement of Purpose. The problem with sarcasm is that it can be really mean and goading. So it is the flaming rule that comes into play and not a specific rule about sarcasm.
