I know this is a subject that can upset emotions. Let's try to be kind to each other. Let people have their say, listen to each orher and try to be understanding while replying. After all we are brothers and sisters in Christ, and we should try to act accordingly. So if you get upset, take a break and come back when you are calm and can respond constructively.

John 13:35
By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.

There are a few words that is used to describe Jesus sacrifice for us.

- Atonement
- Reconciliation
- Propitiation
- Mercy seat

Any more?

1. How would you describe each of these words?

2. What verses would you use to describe the objective side of the atonement? By objective side I mean what is done (to us, to the world or to God) before we have faith.

I think I started a similar thread some time ago, yet I didn't get the answer I was looking for.

Christ love,
P

So then, can you clarify some what answer are you looking for ?

Thanks for asking! I'm trying to understand if the sacrifice of Christ was an atoning sacrifice, as giving atonement to us when we come to faith in him, or if the atonement of us happened before we came to faith, for us to receive through faith.

John seems to have understood it this way: He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. 1 John 2

There are the words
hilastērion - propitiation/mercy seat
hilasmós - propitiation
katallássō - reconcile

Hilasterion and hilasmos seems to be the objective side, the sacrifice that atones and katallasso seems to be the subjectice side of atonement, being atoned.

Christ love,
P
This is a huge topic and I have enough notes on the subject to write a big book.

Atonement is one of those religious concepts which is best understood through experiencing it, then trying to explain it. Unfortunately, the new Christian is filled with ideas about atonement prior to experiencing it, so they are brain washed into trying to feel something that does not happen and quenching what should happen.

One of the advantages the Jews before Christ’s sacrifice had with atonement was personally going through the atonement process for very minor sins (unintentional sins). Lev. 5 explains why and what sinner goes through in the atonement process and might be a good place to start, since Lev. 4-5 is where we first have atonement being described. There is also the advantage of the Lev. 5 atonement being for the individuals personal and for actual sins.

We might be able to take the atonement process for very minor sins and extrapolate up to what it could be like for rebellious disobedience directly towards God requiring death for the sinner with no atonement possible under the Old Law.

It would be best to imagen yourself as a first century (BC) Jewish man who just accidently touched a dead unclean animal. If you are real poor you are going to have to work an extra job help someone else for money to buy a sack of flour. If you live in the city and have money you are going to have to go out and buy a lamb and some grain to feed it. You are not a shepherd, so you will have to drag or carry a balling, thirsty and hungry lamb to the altar. You get up early to hike into Jerusalem wait in line for hours to hand the flour or lamb to the priest and watch them go through their part of the atonement process which if you all did everything right will result in God forgiving you and you feeling forgiven.

There is more to what and why this happens which we can find in Lev. 5:

5…they must confess in what way they have sinned. (which we need to do in the atonement process)

6 As a penalty for the sin they have committed… Here the reason for atonement is given “as a penalty” (punishment but better translated disciplining).

If the sacrifice was made as a “payment” for a sin: these sins are all the same and God considers all people the same, so the sacrifice would need to be the same (a lamb for all or doves for all or flour for all) but the sacrifices are not the same. The different values of the sacrifices, is an attempt to equalize the hardship/penalty (disciplining) on the sinners and does not suggest a payment being made to God especially a payment to forgive a sin. God does not need a bag of flour to forgive sins.

The intention of the sinner going through all this, would be, all the benefits that come from being Lovingly disciplined.

We really need to go through every verse relating to atonement and sacrifice to gleam a true understanding, but you asked for other word used to describe Jesus’ sacrifice:

Jesus, Paul, Peter, John and the writer of Hebrews all describe Christ torturous, humiliating murder as a ransom payment.

When we talk to nonbelievers, we are not trying to get them to believe some book, words, doctrine or philosophy, but we want them to accept through faith Jesus Christ and Him crucified. If that nonbeliever trust (has faith) in Christ and Him crucified a child is released and allowed to enter the kingdom where God the Father is, but if the nonbeliever refuses for lack of faith in Jesus Christ and Him crucified, a child is not set free to go to the Father.

Does this not sound very much like a kidnapping scenario with a ransom being offered?

“Jesus Christ and Him crucified” is described in scripture as the ransom payment?

Would the sinner holding a child of God out of the Kingdom of God describe a kidnapper?

“Jesus Christ and Him crucified” is a huge sacrificial payment, like you find with children being ransomed?

God is not a criminal undeserving kidnapper holding His own children and satan is not changeable nor has he the power to hold God’s child back from God, so the unbeliever is the only excellent fit for the kidnapper in the atonement process. Are at least some of the unbelieving sinner the same person who goes to be with God or do some unbelieving sinners experience a new birth to become a new person which can now enter the Kingdom?

Verse we need to really review heavily would be Ro. 3:25, Psalms 22, Is. 53, and lots more, but all the “theories” of atonement right now have huge issues, but the Bible explains it with lots of thinking or experience.

That is my intro.

The post before this one (long post on atonement by bling) was very good, btw.

RE when did it happen ?
It may help to understand as written, that Jesus Died ONCE FOR ALL TIME, and will never die again. Jesus IS the ATONEMENT for our sins. HIS BLOOD is the payment for our sins, ONCE FOR ALL TIME. He will not shed His Blood again, no, not ever.

THus, it is important, since there will never be another sacrifice for our sins, to not become one of those described by Yahuweh in the New Testament who taste of the heavenlies enjoying His Gifts and fellowship, then turn and trample underfoot the gospel or the blood of Jesus ,
FOR WHOM there is NO LONGER ANY sacrifice for their sin. i.e. they cannot be redeemed, saved, or ever enter heaven.

Yahuweh with extravagant generosity is supplied everything needed for abundant life now in this life and in the life to come. Every need for every person was planned and prepared for fully with no lack on God's Part (men/mankind however do often cause lack/ hunger/ thirst/ death/ etc ) ....
Before we even existed, Yahuweh Planned in Perfect Wisdom and Knowledge and Supplied everything we would ever need for this life and eternally.

When the unbelieving sinner is born again he/she becomes another person (you are "born again") and it is that new, born again person, who the sinner is keep out of the Kingdom.
Did you become a new person when you became a Christian and have a different family?
Jesus is both the payer of the ransom and the ransom payment, but I would not call the kidnapper and the kidnapped the same person, just as I am not the same person I was before becoming a Christian.
When Saul became a new person he even changed his name so you do not confuse the two.
Do nonbelieving sinners enter the Kingdom?

Another view of the atonement is recapitulation theory of the atonement

Recapitulation theory of atonement - Wikipedia

and

https://www.theopedia.com/recapitulation-theory-of-atonement

The Recapitulation Theory agrees that God needed to deal with man’s sin. Man was separated from God as a result of the fall and, left to his own devices, was incapable of returning to God. However, Recapitulation sees the model through which God dealt with man’s sin as a hospital rather than a courtroom. Instead of viewing the atonement as Christ paying the price for sin in order to satisfy a wrathful God, Recapitulation teaches that Christ became human to heal mankind by perfectly uniting the human nature to the Divine Nature in His person. Through the Incarnation, Christ took on human nature, becoming the Second Adam, and entered into every stage of humanity, from infancy to adulthood, uniting it to God. He then suffered death to enter Hades and destroy it. After three days, He resurrected and completed His task by destroying death.

By entering each of these stages and remaining perfectly obedient to the Father, Christ recapitulated every aspect of human nature. He said “Yes” where Adam said “No” and healed what Adam’s actions had damaged. This enables all of those who are willing to say yes to God to be perfectly united with the Holy Trinity through Christ’s person. In addition, by destroying death, Christ reversed the consequence of the fall. Now, all can be resurrected. Those who choose to live their life in Christ can be perfectly united to the Holy Trinity, receiving the full love of God as Heavenly bliss. However, those who reject Christ and choose to live their lives chasing after their passions will receive the love of God as hell.

What Is the Eastern Orthodox View of the Atonement?

Just a thought: The "old" person isn't he in bondage with the devil? Isn't it the devil that is the kidnapper? Adam sold his soul to the devil.
This is part of the explanation the real early proponents of the “Ransom Theory” tried to explain the theory. At the time this theory was being developed many Christians seemed to believe there was a war going on in the Spiritual realm with satan winning some battles, but the final victory would be with God winning. Also, going on at this time were kidnappings by pirates, criminal gangs and even nations. People did not have cash readily available, so the enemy would take the key person away (kidnap) and give time for the family to get money together, so paying kidnappers was common practice.

The problem with the “Ransom Theory” where satan holds God’s children is the following:

There is no war going on in the spiritual realm, where good is fighting evil.

To say God is paying satan elevates satan to being almost equal to God at least on the same level when angels can defeat satan.

There is not cosmic “Law” out there that says: “You have to pay the kidnapper”, so there is not reason for God to pay satan, if satan stole/kidnapped man, God owes satan nothing.

Adam did not sell his soul to satan and scripture does not suggest that, we do not know if Adam and Eve repented seeking God’s forgiveness.

Sin does hold the person back, but humbly accepting God’s help/Charity (ransom) will set them free.

People like to think it is someone else’s fault for them heading to hell and satan is a good one to blame, but they can also blame: Adam and Eve, God, bad luck or other people. “The devil made me do it” does not work with God.

All mature adults sin and the sinning makes them a child of satan and the perceived pleasures of sin holds us back, but when we like the prodigal son come to our senses we can turn to God even though we are still held in the pigsty of life.

I have understood reconciliation and atonement is the same.

...God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not reckoning to them their trespasses, and having committed to us the word of reconciliation.
2 Cor. 5:19

And it means, God made a new deal through Jesus with people. He forgives sin and gives the right understanding so that person will be righteous and will be on line with God’s will.

Jesus answered him, "Most assuredly, I tell you, unless one is born anew, he can't see the Kingdom of God." Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born?" Jesus answered, "Most assuredly I tell you, unless one is born of water and spirit, he can't enter into the Kingdom of God! That which is born of the flesh is flesh. That which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Don't marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born anew.'
John 3:3-7

as many as received him, to them he gave the right to become God's children, to those who believe in his name: who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
John 1:12-13

It is the spirit who gives life. The flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and are life.
John 6:63

For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel. After those days," says the Lord; "I will put my laws into their mind, I will also write them on their heart. I will be to them a God, And they will be to me a people. They will not teach every man his fellow citizen, Every man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' For all will know me, From the least of them to the greatest of them. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness. I will remember their sins and lawless deeds no more."

I would not call reconciliation and atonement the “same”, since atonement aids in reconciliation process.

Is there a problem with God’s ability, attitude or Love which keeps man from being reconciled or is it man’s problem?

Was God changed by the cross or was man changed by the cross and even if you say both explain the change made in God?

How have you personally been changed by the cross, since God does the forgiving?
