The bishop's failure to make the sign of the cross, or even mention Jesus Christ, was a major missed opportunity. Talking about "justice" and "righteousness" is fine and all, but there's nothing distinctly Catholic about Bishop Barron's prayer. If anything, it reminded me of Matthew 10:33: "He that shall deny me before men, I will also deny him before my Father who is in Heaven."

Barron himself has been a critic of "dumbed down" Catholicism, and an advocate for Catholics to bring their faith into the public square. So it makes his avoidance of the most simple expressions of faith- the sign of the cross, a mention of Christ- all the more baffling.

Archbishop Barron has recently stated that we have a reasonable hope that ALL will be saved. See
. Barron takes what he thinks is the middle road between universalism and predestination. See especially 5:30 on the video. I do not accept this. I agree that we should hope that all are saved but it is not reasonable to expect this considering that our Lord Himself said that only few will enter the gate to heaven.

Since Barron believes that all will probably be saved there is no point to pray a Catholic prayer, according to him.

Who was it that picked him to be a bishop?

Yeah - that just fits too well doesn't it?
I asked because I did not know.

So I looked it up. It was pope Francis that chose him. However, cardinal George did call him "one of the Church's best messengers". So maybe not the worst.

Sorry Chevy - I thought you were saying you knew who chose him. But he's a perfect Francis choice.

Tobin is the perfect choice. Or Cupich. Or McElroy. Or Fr. James Martin (yes there is a rumor about him being made a bishop). Bishop Barron did such a good job of his Catholicism series that I'm not eager to throw him under the bus yet.

Let know if Mr. Martin's made a bishop, that would shocking news!

One of the things that I find disturbing is when priests who preside over public prayer in interfaith contexts do not make the sign of the cross or seem too afraid and become politically correct so as not to "offend," yet people from other faiths are able to freely pray according to their tradition without batting an eye.

There is a video of a Franciscan friar who also prayed in that setting. He did make the sign of the cross, but that was about it: he used the "prayer of Saint Francis" (we know there are heavy doubts that this prayer is of his authorship), which is almost a pop culture symbol.

I think both could have done better.
