Since the U.S. release date for the movie "Midway" has just passed, I assume this historical item is a hot ticket at the moment.

There is actually a postlude to Midway, which the movie probably left out: what Midway is like today. In 1942, Midway was attacked by the Japanese. Today, Midway is under attack by plastic:
Midway, a plastic island - CNN Video

Which, ironically, the majority of that plastic probably comes from Asia. Although...a large portion of the plastic which America consumes probably goes in the recycling bin. And where does that "recycled" plastic go? To Asia. And very likely, rather than recycle some of this plastic, they just turn around and dump it in the ocean:
Huge rise in US plastic waste shipments to poor countries following China ban

Midway sits in that big plastic blob in the Pacific. And that is no way to treat a site as venerated to American military history as Midway. This should be grassy fields, filled with crosses and memorial markers. Instead, it's turned into a big plastic blob with 1.5 million birds on it, every single one of whom have ingested some plastic. Many die from it. Except the frustrating thing is, many vets don't care.

Nonetheless, that is the reality: 300 Americans died defending Midway, only for Midway to fall 65 years later to a big blob of plastic.

As far as dumping plastic at sea, the US Navy has rules against it, to the point of searching every can of wet trash that gets dumped, and we did our best to keep things separate as well. However, things do get through, and that is regrettable.

Personally, I despise trash of any type being thrown around, on land, or, at sea.

Wet trash, BTW, are the food scraps left over after meals, and on an Aircraft Carrier 20K (+) meals are prepared daily, so that's a lot of food to search through for plastics.

Midway Island was a functioning military base until the mid 70's, it has a small caretaker staff, and people can visit with a permit. However, getting there would be a problem I think. It is some type of bird sanctuary as well, and flying to the island with all those birds around is dangerous.

Wake Island, the scene of an Alamo situation is still in use by the US Military, it's interesting to visit there as well.

In a rather sad twist, a lot of environmental experts say it's probably better to just throw away your plastics and glass for the time being. They do less damage to the environment in a landfill than the ocean.

Note, that's just plastic and glass. All other recyclables should absolutely be continued.

Back to Midway...

Some fun for the nautical buffs: the wrecks of the Akagi and Kaga were found a few weeks ago. These two Japanese carriers were part of the strike force at Midway. Kaga was the first of the carriers to be hit in the surprise attack the US launched.

Going in to this "AH YEAH! MIDWAY BABY! JAPAN DROOLS!" Coming out "Great plastic..." Plastic isn't that hard to recycle. You can easily smelt it, or use it as fuel. It is better than going to asians.

By the way have you guy seen this video? It's an interesting view point that Americans should see. I'll admit I got goose bumps at the end.
