The Christian’s Handbook of Dire Warnings in the New Testament

The reason for this booklet
There are several reasons why the churches have NOT been pointing out
the warnings in the New Testament that our salvation is conditional.
Our salvation is a co-operative effort between us and God!
The New Testament teaches that believers have certain responsibilities
and duties to the Lord God who saved them.
There is a very popular doctrine in the churches these days:
“Once believers are saved, they cannot lose their salvation”
This dangerous false doctrine has such names as:
grace-only, cheap-grace, hyper-grace, easy-believism.
This booklet presents many New Testament verses
which prove that our salvation is conditional.

Prove your salvation is real through your obedience
This is about obedience to Jesus’ teachings and commands.
Continuing obedience is what “being faithful” means!
True believers love Jesus, and want to follow and obey Him!

“If you love Me, obey My commandments … Those who accept
My commandments and obey them are the ones who love Me
… If anyone loves Me, he will obey My word” (John 14:15-23)

Truly, does anyone get into heaven who does not love Jesus?
“When you obey My commandments, you remain in My love” (John 15:10)
“You are truly my disciples, if you remain faithful to My teachings” (John 8:31)
“He who obeys His commandments abides in Him and He in him” (1 John 3:24)
“We can be sure that we know Him, if we obey His commandments.
If someone claims, ‘I know God’, but does NOT obey God’s commandments,
that person is a liar and is NOT living in the truth.” (1 John 2:3-4)
“Loving God means obeying His commandments” (1 John 5:3)
“if you want to receive eternal life, keep the commandments.” (Matthew 19:17)
“I tell you the truth, anyone who obeys my teachings will never die!” (John 8:51)
“So you must live as God’s obedient children.”
(1 Peter 1:14)
JESUS’ WARNING:
“Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord’,
and don’t do the things that I say?”
(Luke 6:46)
HIS JUDGMENT:
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord’
… I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me,
you who break God’s laws!’
” (Matthew 7:21-23)

Prove you are righteous by practicing righteousnesss
Scripture says: one’s righteous standing before God can be lost.
“… let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is
righteous just as He is righteous. He who sins is of the devil
… Whoever has been born of God does NOT sin (habitually)
… In this the children of God and the children of the devil
are manifest: whoever does NOT practice righteousness is
NOT of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.” (1 John 3:7-10)

Believers who are “faithful” will be obedient to
Jesus’ commandments, and will practice righteousness!
Therefore, they will have a righteous standing before the Lord.

“… you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.” (1 John 2:29)
But, do all believers who are born of God practice righteousness?
“who fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him” (Acts 10:35)
“For it would have been better if they had never known
the way to righteousness than to know it and reject the
command they were given to live a holy life.” (2 Peter 2:21)
____________________________________________________

We are so influenced by our flesh and the things of this world
that we just cannot believe everything in the Bible is true!
Is what Jesus says irrelevant, exaggerations … or to be believed?

“If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you
to enter into life
maimed, instead of having two hands and go
to
hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched” (Mark 9:43)
Every branch in Me that does NOT bear fruit He
takes away
… If anyone does NOT abide in Me … they gather them and
throw them into the fire, and they are burned.” (John 15:2-6)

Ensure your salvation by repenting of your sins
Repent (metanoeo) and believe (pisteou) may be understood as being
opposite sides of the same coin. Repent means to turn from one’s allegiance
to sin and unbelief, whereas believe means to place one’s trust in Christ.
Thus, when one is mentioned the other is implied … John never used the
words repent, repentance, or faith to describe the way people are saved.
Instead, he used believe since this term included all of these ideas.
(The Holman Christian Standard Bible)
“… forgetting that they have been cleansed from their old sins.” (2 Peter 1:9, NLT)
The other translations agree …
old sins (NKJV,RSV) ✸ former sins (NASB,ESV) ✸ past sins (NIV,HCSB)
“… and forgive us our (current) sins as we have forgiven
those who sin against us … if you refuse to forgive others,
your Father will NOT forgive your sins.” (Matthew 6:12-15)
“the pain (from Paul’s rebuke) caused you to repent and change your ways …
For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin
and results in salvation … worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance,
results in spiritual death.” (2 Corinthians 7:8-10)

Paul wrote this to the Corinthian church regarding his previous letter of rebuke,
which he sent to them about a particular grievous sin. They really needed to repent!

“He does not want anyone to be destroyed (perish spiritually)
but wants everyone to repent … what holy and godly lives you
should live … I am warning you ahead of time … be found living
peaceful lives that are pure and blameless” (2 Peter 3:6-14)
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us of
our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

“This is an extremely important verse … all men need to be repeatedly
purified from all unrighteousness, from all their sins … We must confess
our sins and turn from them … we must hate our sins and turn from them.
This is true repentance.” (Applied New Test. Commentary)

Believers were chosen and called to live holy lives
“… before He made the world, God loved us and chose us in
Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.” (Ephesians 1:4)
“God saved us and called us to live a holy life.” (2 Timothy 1:9)

It is God’s will and plan for your life “to present you holy, and
blameless, and above approach in His sight …” (Colossians 1:22)
“God’s will is for you to be holy … live in holiness and honor
… God has called us to live holy lives, not impure lives …
anyone who refuses to live by these rules is rejecting God.” (1 Thessalonians 4:3-8)
“God has given us everything we need to live a godly life …
Work hard to prove that you really are among those God
has called and chosen … It would be better if they had
never known the way to righteousness than to know it,
and then reject the command they were given to
live a holy life” (2 Peter 1:3, 1:10, 2:21)
“God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might
share in his holiness. … work at living a holy life, for those
who are NOT holy will NOT see the Lord … Be careful that
you do not refuse to listen to the One who is speaking.”
(Hebrews 12:10-25)
“He chose them to become like his Son (i.e. righteous and holy)" (Romans 8:29)
“… throw off your old sinful nature … Put on your new nature,
created to be like God – truly righteous and holy … He did this
to present her (the church) to himself as a glorious church without
spot or wrinkle, or any other blemish.” (Ephesians 4:22-24, 5:27)
“… perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” (2 Corinthians 7:1)

Your faith must endure until the end of your life
In the NT, the Greek indicates that “believe” is a present tense imperative verb!
Yes, a continuing belief-faith is necessary for continuing salvation-eternal life!

Note the famous John 3:16 …
“… whoever believes [present tense: continues to believe] in Him
may have
[present tense: may continue to have] eternal life.
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son,
that whoever believes
[present tense: continues to believe] in Him
should not perish but have
[present tense: continue to have] eternal life.”
Some Christians call these “CONDITIONAL SALVATION” verses …
“… to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in
His sight — IF indeed you continue in the faith … and are not
moved away from the hope of the gospel” (Colossians 1:22-23)
“It is this Good News (the gospel) that saves you, IF you continue
to believe the message I told you” (1 Corinthians 15:1-2)
“… every act of disobedience was punished. So what makes
us think we can escape, IF we ignore this great salvation” (Hebrews 2:1-3)
“And we are God’s house, IF we keep our courage and remain
confident in our hope in Christ … For IF we are faithful to
the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed,
we will share in all that belongs to Christ.” (Hebrews 3:6,14)
“And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season
we shall reap (eternal life), IF we do not lose heart.“ (Galatians 6:9)
“IF we endure, we shall also reign with Him.” (2 Timothy 2:12)
“… follow the example of those who are going to inherit God’s
promises because of their faith and endurance.” (Hebrews 6:12)
“the one who endures to the end will be saved.“
(Matthew 10:22)

Believers must forgive unconditionally
“… and forgive us our (current) sins, as we have forgiven
those who sin against us … if you refuse to forgive others,
your Father will NOT forgive your sins.” (Matthew 6:12-15)
“… if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that
your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.
But
if you do NOT forgive, neither will your Father in heaven
forgive your trespasses.”
(Mark 11:25-26)
If Father God does NOT forgive you, will you get into heaven?

Do those believing in “grace only” fear the Lord?
Grace-only, cheap-grace, hyper-grace, easy-believism … are called antinomianism!
This is the notion that a one-time justification saves apart from sanctification.
But, this is an incomplete understanding of God’s wonderful free gift of grace.
The problem with easy-believism is that it allows those who are NOT walking
in obedience to live comfortably with …
a false sense of assurance
leading to the tragedy described in Matthew 7:21-23 (for example).
It encourages people living in hypocrisy, disobedience, and sin to have a false assurance!

“… some ungodly people have wormed their way into your churches,
saying that God’s marvelous grace allows us to live immoral lives
(Jude 4)
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul.
But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.”
(Matthew 10:28 & Luke 12:5)
This proves that “fear” of the Lord goes beyond reverence!
“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7, 9:10)
“Work hard to show the results of your salvation,
obeying God with deep reverence and fear.” (Philippians 2:12)

More of the many dire warnings in New Testaments
“Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as
as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey,
either (slaves) of sin which leads to (eternal) death,
OR (slaves) of obedience which leads too righteousness …
so now present your members as slaves of righteousness
which leads to holiness” (Romans 6:16-19)
“For you are a slave to whatever controls you.”
(2 Peter 2:19)
“… whoever commits sin is a slave of sin.”
(Jesus, John 8:34)
“For if you live by its dictates, you will die (eternally).
But if through the power of the Holy Spirit you
put to death the deeds of your sinful nature,
you will live (eternally).”
(Romans 8:12-14)
We always have a free-will choice!
“But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own
desires and enticed. Then when desire has conceived,
it gives birth to sin, which when it is full-grown,
brings forth (eternal) death.”
(James 1:14-16)
“You have become estranged from Christ
you have fallen from grace.”
(Galatians 5:4)
Believers can fall from God's grace!
‘Now the just shall live by faith; but if anyone draws back,
My soul has no pleasure in him.’ But we are not of
those who draw back to perdition …” (Hebrews 10:38-39)
“Not everyone who says to Me,
‘Lord, Lord’, shall enter the kingdom of heaven,
but he who
does the will of My Father … then I will declare to them,
‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!
”(Matthew 7:21-23)
Sinning Christians will NOT enter the kingdom of God.
Proof: 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Galatians 5:19-24, Ephesians 5:3-6

Hi, BCsenior. Thanks for your love for evangelism. I have an somewhat disagreement about salvation. I believe we can lose our salvation but we can leave our salvation. Here is proof.

“Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica” (2 Timothy 4:10).

Demas had salvation but left his salvation for the world and the pleasures of the world.

Jesus lived the perfect and obedient life that no one couldn't. That is why we have grace. We are human and we are proned to sin on a daily basis but we have grace because He died for us Who again lived the perfect life. If we do sin we have a advocate who is Jesus Christ our savior. Let's continue this discussion if you please. God bless.

Hi Scott,
IMO, there are better proofs, such as:
-- being estranged from Christ and falling from grace (Galatians 5:4)
-- drawing back to perdition (Hebrews 10:36-39)
Christians who are habitual sinners are NOT in a saved state.
Christians who sin occasionally can confess and repent.
God bless.
