Habakkuk 2:14
For the earth will be filled
with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.

I hear people quote this passage lots and it tends to be mixed in with the great commission. What does this verse mean in context and can it/should it be included in the great commission mandate? When is its fulfillment? What is our responsibility or role in it?

one thing that strikes me from it is the emphasis of "the knowledge of the glory of the Lord". certainly, the glory of the Lord is everywhere and we can do nothing to spread it but this verse perhaps exposes something else that it is the knowledge that is lacking not the glory. So what does it take to spread this knowledge and what does a saturated knowledge of the glory of the Lord look like? Is that the end game?

Good question! It required me to reflect on it in hopes to get the sense of the scripture. In reference to the “knowledge” seems to be reserved for a future date or after a specific event: Battle of Armageddon. After this event, God’s sovereignty will be forever vindicated. (Revelation 16:16) How would it be possible for all of mankind to be educated in God’s way of life in this system of things?

Keep in mind that the scriptures of Habakkuk were inspired by a vision of events in the future. Regardless, it is helpful and important to educated people with an urgency. Doing so my save someone and it certainly keeps us focused and sharp.

God is working in the past, now, and in the future (simultaneously). The idea of 'the future' is from our perspective not His. In this view, the visions Habakkuk has are both of the past, present, and of the future, at the same time.

The knowledge for us comes from the dialogue with God that people have (Habakkuk talks to God and asks questions). This is the only way.

Hope and the journey to God is the point (Habakkuk starts at a low place ends up on a high place). God's purpose is brought forward even with violence and unjust nations as His instruments. God is doing this (was/is/will be) but we are not necessarily privy to the details.

Trusting and worshiping God provides the knowledge for each of us to find in our journey. This requires determination on our part to keep seeking God. We will find Him when we quiet our minds and hearts even with what seems like chaos going on around us (see also Deuteronomy 27:9 regarding discernment and spiritual strength).

All of this requires faith. A faith that we will live by as we grow spiritually. This is the case even when we do not have clear answers regarding how God is working.

This is the path of the just to satisfaction. The unjust will not be satisfied no matter how much they kill and oppress others. The unjust will not only be unsatisfied but they will pay back the just in the end. The actions of the unjust will be their own undoing.

Peace comes for us in an anticipation of God bringing us a victory we can find only in Him. The rest is noise and distraction.
