Today in the Western Church we celebrate the Bodily Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is our Queen who stands at the right hand of her Son the King and intercedes constantly for us. She is an example of what will happen to all of us as we will get our bodies back when Christ returns. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ king of endless glory!

Early Fathers of the Church and later saints in the history of the Church like St. Gregory the wonder worker, St. Jerome, St. Hesychius, and St. Anthony of Padua all saw the Assumption of Mary in this Prophetic Psalm.

"Arise, O LORD, and go to thy resting place,
thou and the ark of thy might".(psalm 132:8)

St. Hesychius (lived c. 300)

Arise, Lord, into Thy rest, Thou and the Ark of Thy sanctification, which is very evidently the Virgin Mother of God. For if thou are the pearl, with good reason is she the Ark” (Serm. V. De S. Maria Deip. Patr. Gr. Tom. 93, pp. 460-4) (Blessed Virgin, p. 227).

Blessed be God in his angels and saints.

In the Eastern Orthodox, and I believe in the Oriental Orthodox Church, we celebrate the Feast of the Dormition of the Theotokos today (August 15).

Neither the tomb, nor death could hold the Theotokos, / Who is constant in prayer and our firm hope in her intercessions. / For being the Mother of Life, / She was translated to life by the One who dwelt in her virginal womb.

Joyous Feast!

think I have learned on Twitter that many Protestants have a mangled understanding of the Assumption "myth"

they think the whole fanciful notion was completely made up or borrowed from paganism as one entire unit

whereas I understand that what happened is:
  • Mary "fell completely asleep"
  • the apostles entombed her
  • the apostles returned on the 3rd day only to find the tomb empty
those direct eyewitness testimony reports were passed down orally and eventually written down by the (supposedly) holy spirit guided AF and ECF

for 2000 years:
  • those have been the facts of the case
  • the interpretation has always been that God in heaven must have taken her, because no one can think of anything else to explain the "missing persons" case
nothing was ever completely made up, unless you accuse the apostles of stealing the body and inventing a cover story

otherwise, if we accept their mature adult testimony, then the historic 2000 year old "Assumption" interpretation certainly fits the facts in light of Scripture (Enoch)
