Hi,

I have a question that I would like to ask you guys. My pastor is very concerned about the technology within the church and he said that we needed to have our devices locked so that way there would be some form of control over what we do on our devices. I followed along believing it was the right thing to do and that it would prevent temptation and hoping my husband would follow along because he has problems with his device. Well, I started to notice about a year ago that some of my conversations or even things I would talk about to my spouse or someone on the phone was being repeated word for word over the pulpit. Or even things I would have listened to that I never talked to with anyone about. It has really started to bother me and make me think something is not right and I am beginning to wonder if my phone could have possibly been tapped? How could I find this out? My hubby keeps saying it’s God speaking through our pastor. I believe God does reveal things to pastors and they do have discernment but I don’t think it should be this often and for things that are not concerning. Like I listened to some tapes called the good old days and it talked about how people lived back when there was no electric and people walked to school and things like that and I was preached to that I wouldn’t really want to live on the old days when there was no electric and that I need to get out of the past and stuff like that. I was almost floored when I had heard that preached because there was no way anyone heard me listening to that and I hadn’t talked to anyone that day. The last straw was last Sunday when my pastor called out over the pulpit something I said to my kids when I was upset before church and it floored me again and my husband was there and he said it’s God talking to you. I don’t want to cause problems within the church but this is really bothering me. I was willing to have my device locked but I wouldn’t want them to hear conversations I have with my husband and things like that. My pastor took an hour to lock my device and I didn’t see what was done on my device. He did not lock my husband’s device.

I don't think God is talking through or to your pastor in this instance. I do think there may be some spying and emotionally manipulative behavior going on here. A cell phone is a private device. Your pastor really shouldn't be on your phone. Or anyone's phone.

Hi EHum92,

I have MAJOR red flags over reading what you have shared. I would immediately take your phone to a specialist who can see what was installed on or done to your phone. Your pastor should NOT have, nor take your phone, and the fact that he had it for an hour is more than concerning. Who knows what he did with it or to it. The things he is repeating from the pulpit is not "God speaking to you." This is creepy. Get it checked out asap. Yesterday wouldn't be soon enough.

I am not sure that what your pastor is doing is actually legal. Some preachers who have claimed to have the gift of the Word of Knowledge have been exposed as receiving information from family members and friends, and then pretending to have "words of knowledge" about the person. I suspect that your pastor could be getting information from your phone in some way and then pretending to have "words of knowledge". This is just downright fraud, and you should get your phone back under your exclusive control, and if necessary, take it to a phone technician to check whether the phone has an app on it that enables the pastor to get information from it. If that is the case, I would go and get advice from the police.

Your phone is your personal and private property. If the pastor is using an app on your phone to get your personal information, then that is a violation of the Privacy Laws, if you have them in your country.

It is interesting that he has not locked your husband's phone. Perhaps there is not the comprehensive "gossip" that he can harvest from his phone.

Be assured, God does not talk through people in the way your husband is telling you. God speaks through His Word the Scriptures. The way that God speaks through a pastor is when he is preaching the Scriptures and explaining what they mean. The Holy Spirit never manipulates people, and so any pastor who is using a tap on a member's phone to provide "words of knowledge" is fraudulent manipulation.

I wouldn't delay. Get back control over your phone, and if your pastor resists you or tried to intimidate you about it, tell him that unless he allows you to take back control of your phone, you will go to the police and a lawyer to get their advice.

Every phone can be reset for factory conditions.
This will solve all your problems.
Another option is to find the tampering, gather all
your members that have had the same issue
anger both his supporters and his victims
and have him removed from his organisation.

Or
you can reset your phone and not make the same mistake again.

Strange things going on there.

And one thing I think to be sure
that ain't God talking to you.

And please note --
I don't make calls like that often --
hardly never.

I would Church shop but,
sounds like your husband is locked in there.

Is this real?
This is so wrong, in so many levels!
I'd change my phone. I don't need anyone keeping tabs on me. I fear God, not men. And even when God talks to me about something going on in my life, He does in private and with grace.

Sounds like you need to do a factory reset. If your pastor asks about it don't say anything and refuse to let him tamper with your phone again.

I would NOT do a factory reset. Do not destroy your evidence.

Take your phone to the cops or a specialist and ask them to determine if he is spying on you. It is illegal for him to spy.

Do not just do a factory reset and leave without speaking up to protect others if he is spying on you. He can be sent to jail for that. It's illegal.

So much church abuse of innocent people is enabled when people just leave without exposing the problem.

If spyware is found, report it to the cops and press charges. It will deter him from ever doing such an evil thing again.... or at least publicize his deeds so others can know rather than be caught in this.

Thank you! I have really been trying to figure out what to do in this situation. I thought about confronting him but what would they say? I really am bothered by it because I don’t want to cause trouble within the church. My pastor has had problems with people just up and leaving in the past and I do not want to be the cause of division. I think it is a worry of his that my family would just leave like the others but really he should not go to this extent to make sure we wouldn’t. I know Satan wants to destroy our pastors within the church. I have a lot of resentment that is building up inside of me because of this and it has caused spiritual issues because I don’t know whether to trust that what he is saying is not just from listening to my device or really from God. There are so many instances that I could say where I was literally floored because I was being preached to very specifically about something I had said or done that day. I really don’t want to speculate but I can’t have all these spiritual problems stacked up on my shoulders and not talk to someone about it. I have only told a few people about it but no one within the church. I do not believe in causing division because God speaks very badly about this. I really want him to know that this is just a trick of Satan to make him fall if he is really doing this and justifying it.

I agree that we should show the utmost respect to leaders, but that does not include allowing them to spiritually abuse, manipulate, or hurt us, or lie in order to impress or control people. Which I fear your pastor is likely doing.

I would not hesitate to share your concerns respectfully but frankly with your husband, and at the *very least*, get a new phone. And give yourself the internal permission to detatch from this pastor emotionally. He does seem to be using technology to scare, control, and impress people under the premise of hearing from God. Which is wrong, and damaging.

I agree that you should not do a factory reset. It could destroy evidence, as Endeavourer said. Go to the police. And doing a factory reset may not remove certain kinds of spyware. The most sophisticated kinds are hard to detect and very hard to remove. That's kind of the point. And be sure to turn off your phone when discussing this matter with the police, in case 'someone' is listening.

I can't imagine your staying at that church. God, not man, should direct your path. It is obvious that this man is obeying Satan. I feel bad when people are gullible like I once was.

I would strongly suggest if not urge her to leave immediately, but for her husband sounding pretty plugged in to all this. So up and leaving right now may not be an option for her, unless she wants all hell to break loose at home.

What I can forsee her safely doing is getting a new phone, not letting her pastor use or touch it, and giving herself internal permission to not be afraid of or believe this pastor's claims, while still respecting him as a man. And beginning to detach herself emotionally from what he says, and claims about himself. While speaking with her husband frankly and clearly about her concerns, and personal skepticism. And pray, deeply, for a way out of this community, for both herself, and her husband.

Ehum:

Exposing bad deeds is not the cause of the division. DOING the bad deeds is the cause of division.

Don't talk to anyone about it. Don't access this thread on this forum with it. Just take it to an expert to find out if there is spyware on it, asap. Also, the advice earlier on this thread that the device should not be near when you are discussing the problem is good. Don't change your behaviors with the phone which might tip him off. Instead, leave your phone in the car while you discuss the problem in your house so the phone can't listen. Some spyware packages give control of the mic to the spy so they can turn it on and listen in.

I believe I'd call the police and explain the situation and ask if there was some way of checking if your phone had been bugged. If it has been, I'd tell them this story and see if any privacy laws had been broken. If you didn't agree to having your phone bugged, it's illegal for someone to do it. And even if it hasn't, a pastor does not have any say over what you do on your phones. That's absolutely an abuse of power. I can see there might be certain instances where someone who has been accessing inappropriate content sites might ask their pastor or a deacon to be an accountability partner, and then make them privy to their phone activity with a program like Covenant Eyes or something. But in that case, the owner of the phone would be in agreement. Trust your instincts. If you're feeling uncomfortable and watched, that's no good.
