IRC it says the child identify as a boy only when the father is around. There is no indication that he would allow the child to explore their own gender at their own household.
This was all posted in the news stories. The issue was that the doctors on both sides, per the articles, said he did not feel distress over his gender, which is part of the diagnostic criteria.

I take it, you never met a Transgender. It a lot different that a child wanting to be a dolphin. Its not even comparable. That goes away. Transgenders people don't . In the past Transgender female, were forced to dress male. Even getting caught when they dressed in dress. They would get in trouble. But it never went away. Eventually they move out on their own. And dressed like a woman and get bottom surgery . And get their driver's license changed to female. Even though many family members disown them for it. It way different than a child seeing a cartoon. And wanting to be a whale for a few weaks .
The world loves its own , so the world loves it when people want what is wrong, and the world will say and even "prove" (with deception) that "it does not go away" , or even that it is there to start with ! (it may not be the self-human at all (the cause) , and maybe may be driven away or changed by prayer and fasting ) ...
