I do not like coffee myself all that much. Now and then maybe but not routinely. My girlfriend, OTOH, loves coffee. She's been complaining that her coffee maker is acting up. I was looking at those Keurigs and Nespressos as a Christmas gift. There's already some Black Friday sales. They're still kinda pricy. Or maybe just an old-school coffee maker but one that is new. I do like that some come in red, her favorite color.

What do y'all use?

The K-cup is an absolute environmental disaster. And this, from Green Mountain Coffee, which purports to be an ecologically responsible corporation. It does make good coffee, but the disposable K-cups work out to $26 per pound. If you get a Keurig, there are reusable K-cups available for it - good for the pocketbook and the environment.

Not sure a coffee maker is a good idea for a Christmas gift from the boyfriend... Could be wrong in your case. Just sayin...

As far as the machine, no idea. I hate coffee.

Well to clarify it would be one of several presents. Not the only one. Trust me she's got me better trained in gift-giving than that.

My household likes me brewing the coffee in our house. What type of coffee maker was she using and what brand of coffee? Maybe we can help with that information.

Most of my adult life I ground my own beans, but my wife really wanted to try a Keurig and we ended up LOVING it :) (and I don't believe I'd ever go back). I am amazed at how good of a cup of coffee it makes, again and again and again.

Bialetti Mocha Express. Use with espresso grind. It's a sort of espresso maker, though I didn't realize this fact until I had been using it for a while. I just thought it was really strong coffee. It works like a percolator, without recirculating and burning the coffee. Like a french press it avoids the paper filter, which removes some of the flavor, but unlike the french press it doesn't get a lot of grit in the coffee. Unlike a drip coffee maker it doesn't have a water reservoir that never sanitizes with heat. It's not fancy, but for a straight cup of coffee I prefer it best.

I prefer my coffee strong so I use a plunger (aka French press). After breaking several glass plungers I invested in an Avanti stainless steel press with a double wall. Expensive but lasts a lifetime, and keeps the coffee hot while it's brewing.

When I want a short black I can chew, I have a beautiful little stainless steel Vigano stovetop Espresso Maker which uses a drip process where the water boils up from the bottom compartment, travels through the coffee and blurps into the top chamber. The result is a thimblefull of coffee flavoured tar. :)

I prefer a semi automatic for convenience and have a Saeco that performs well. But I no longer drink hot coffee. I grind my own beans and use a French press. I second the recommendation for a stainless steel carafe. And I have a Kitchenaid cold brew maker. The cleanup is easy.

Coffee making is very unique to the individual. I am satisified with the right blends of instant coffees. My sister, on the other hand, likes the latest new-fangled coffee brewing contraptions.

I would get her something like what she had before ... unless she hints that she wants something different.
