I'm Australian, and therefore not au-fait with American politics. I'm also aware Jimmy Carter did not have a reputation as an outstanding American President, although it was a long time ago.

In fairness to him though, he had to endure several crises during his Presidency - the US fuel crisis of 1979, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the Iran crisis, and the continuing Cold War, amongst others. The USA was still coming to terms with it's recent loss in the Vietnam War.

He also irritated me a bit with some of his comments on Catholicism, which weren't always well informed.

Overall though, as a person I think he's a very good and outstanding man.
