I've been struggling with myself for a few days now. I tend to be an outgoing person and always try to help others out. But now I've reached a situation where I don't know how to help.
I've got this cool professor, right? He's always happy. I've never seen him show even a hint of sadness, until the other day. I was bummed out because of stuff going on - and he tried to cheer me up a bit. As the conversation goes on, I ask of his life and I find out he's got some pretty bad things happening in his life.
And I stand there, amazed at how he's able to still smile as he says that. I know it hurts him, even though he smiles.
I have prayed for him in my daily prayers. But this professor is one of my favorites and as I said, I want to help people. I would like to ask him if he would let me sit down with him and quickly pray for him. I listened to a sermon earlier and heard of someone who did this and thought maybe I should try as well. However I do not know whether he is religious, at all.
I just want an opinion. I think my situation is fairly clear. Should I go forward with this if, and only if, he is fine with it? How should I pray for him (or even others) who are going through difficult times? I only wish to spread God's influence.

Well some atheists find it offensive and some just take it a type of good wishes from an acquaintance, coworker or friend . If your prof is an atheist. He might not be. He seemed to want to unburden himself a little on you . I’d ask him if he wants your prayers.

I'd say in the course of asking him how things have been going, ask him if you can pray for him, if you feel led to do so. There are plenty of unbelievers who won't take offense, even if they are otherwise hostile to the Gospel. A few have surprised me with how receptive they are, personally. If he says no, then don't push it, just continue with praying for him on your own.

Just say a private prayer for him. You don't have to involve him in your prayers, unless you're being preachy.

I had a friend in Arkansas that stated he was an unbeliever a couple of times. I heard he was in a nursing home with a terminal illness. I knew his wife, a believer, and told her I would visit him in the nursing home.

When I got ready to leave, I told him I would pray for him if he didn't mind. He then shared with me he had come to believe in God and wanted my prayers. It paid off not being pushy with that man.

It is a very good thing to pray for the hurting. It is also very wise to keep a Godly guard up so you don't get attracted to him or caught off guard and end up in a compromised situation. If you have a friend who could meet you with him to pray and witness, maybe, but even then pray up over it and follow the Lord's guidance. Introduce him to a Christian male friend who could be there for him too. Keep it all above reproach or hint of wrong. God bless you in this decision. =)
