Interesting theology in this song.
Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from the side of Christ, wash me
Passion of Christ, strengthen me
O good Jesus, hear me
Within Thy wounds hide me
Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from the side of Christ, wash me
Suffer me not to be separated from Thee
From the malignant enemy defend me
In the hour of my death call me
Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from the side of Christ, wash me
And bid me come unto Thee
That with thy Saints I may praise Thee Forever and ever.
Amen
Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from the side of Christ, wash me

Latin:
Anima Christi, sanctifica me.
Corpus Christi, salva me.
Sanguis Christi, inebria me.
Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.
Passio Christi, conforta me.
O bone Jesu, exaudi me.
Intra tua vulnera absconde me.

Anima Christi, sanctifica me.
Corpus Christi, salva me.
Sanguis Christi, inebria me.
Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.
Ne permittas me separari a te.
Ab hoste maligno defende me.
In hora mortis meae voca me.

Anima Christi, sanctifica me.
Corpus Christi, salva me.
Sanguis Christi, inebria me.
Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.
Et iube me venire ad te,
Ut cum Sanctis tuis laudem te,
In saecula saeculorum.
Amen

Anima Christi, sanctifica me.
Corpus Christi, salva me.
Sanguis Christi, inebria me.
Aqua lateris Christi, lava me.

Too much "me".
When you pray for mercy is it too much me? Biblical prayers, in the psalms for example, often speak in the first person about me and my needs and my enemies and my willingness to serve God. The same applies to Paul's prayers for himself and his requests for prayer. Asking God to be merciful to me, a sinner, is held forth by Jesus as an example of prayer that God answers. So no, I cannot agree with you that it is too much me. It's just the right amount of me when petitioning for mercy.

Usually I use the same criteria for songs as you do. I call it the "I/me" versus "Jesus/God" ratio. If a song says I and me more than Jesus and God, it is not rightly centered. It is promoting self over selflessness. This song is the exception. For every mention of me, it places that me in a humble position and mentions Christ as the Savior of that me. Oddly, the older songs get this right much more often than the contemporary numbers.

Yeah, and even those don't have the same amount of me as this one.

  1. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
  2. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
  3. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
  4. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
  5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
  6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

I know now why it is so popular for Evangelicals. However, I will give you the benefit of the doubt for now

I counted 24 "me". We can agree to disagree though?
We can agree anything we like but the facts will remain facts regardless of our agreements.

Let's count the references to self in this psalm - one of many that speaks of "me" a lot.
(Psalms 27:1-14)
[1] The Lord is my light and my salvation;
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life;
of whom shall I be afraid?
[2] When evildoers assail me
to eat up my flesh,
my adversaries and foes,
it is they who stumble and fall.
[3] Though an army encamp against me,
my heart shall not fear;
though war arise against me,
yet I will be confident.
[4] One thing have I asked of the Lord,
that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple.
[5] For he will hide me in his shelter
in the day of trouble;
he will conceal me under the cover of his tent;
he will lift me high upon a rock.
[6] And now my head shall be lifted up
above my enemies all around me,
and I will offer in his tent
sacrifices with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make melody to the Lord.
[7] Hear, O Lord, when I cry aloud;
be gracious to me and answer me!
[8] You have said, Seek my face.
My heart says to you,
Your face, Lord, do I seek.
[9] Hide not your face from me.
Turn not your servant away in anger,
O you who have been my help.
Cast me not off; forsake me not,
O God of my salvation!
[10] For my father and my mother have forsaken me,
but the Lord will take me in.
[11] Teach me your way, O Lord,
and lead me on a level path
because of my enemies.
[12] Give me not up to the will of my adversaries;
for false witnesses have risen against me,
and they breathe out violence.
[13] I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord
in the land of the living!
[14] Wait for the Lord;
be strong, and let your heart take courage;
wait for the Lord!
The count is 44 me, my, and I in a 14 verse psalm.

It may sound very holy and noble to complain against the presence of "me" and "I" in a hymn or song sung in worship because it is alleged that in our prayers and worship we ought to be God centred and selfless but the examples in the scriptures are far from uniform in their support of such a view.

PS: I am not an evangelical. :)

PPS: Psalm 27 took only 7 verses to reach a total of 24 references to self.
