My good friend Screwtape has become quite powerful in the Lowerarchy. He has assigned hand picked field devils to all of you for your failure to mention the book about him.

I would say Hell hath no fury like a devil scorned, but technically his fury is from Hell.
^_^ Yeah, that would be a good movie if it would be done correctly.

I still kind of like the BBC productions of The Narnia Chronicles - the white witch was great and terrifying.
Do you mean The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe.? Yes she was quite terrifying. But not match for Aslan.

Despite the advanced animatronics I never found the depiction of Aslan was all that convincing. Others may disagree.

Which movie? LOTR or The Hobbit?

In a way both really. So, here's how things went back in the late seventies and early 80s with the first attempts to render the Hobbit and LOTR in animated forms.

The Hobbit was released by Rankin/Bass in 1977 (I think), and while that was going on Ralph Bakshi worked on what amounted to more or less the first half or two-thirds of the LOTR and that movie was released in theaters in 1978, to a less than rave review.

There was supposed to be a sequel, but because the 1978 movie failed at the box-office, Rankin/Bass came a few years later in the early 80's and essentially did a kind of "finish up" of what Ralph Bakshi tried to do. Of course, needless to say, Rankin/Bass, being the children's animator company that it has been, made it's version of the Return of the King in a way that was more accessible for children.

Anyway, that was the animated mess of the Hobbit and LOTR of the late 70s and 80s. Then, as we all know, Peter Jackson came along and did a wonderful job of doing the new movies that came out beginning in 2001.

And that's that, in a nutshell.

I enjoyed The Screwtape Letters. The audio version by John Cleese is great. Although Tolkien’s work was produced at different intervals. There’s an ideal reading order available. I started with The Silmarillion, then Children of Hurin, and followed with The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I’ll read The Unfinished Tales this winter.

Christopher Tolkien holds the rights for The Silmarillion and hasn’t sold them. No movie is under production at present. He’s retired and that may open the door later on.

However, Amazon is producing a television adaptation of The Lord of the Rings focusing on young Aragorn.

Really? What didn't you like about it?

Some of the flying scenes and the something of a cuddly toy appearance - but some scenes were better than others. It was advanced for the time I'll grant and I'm sure it wowed younger children, but I was 16 or 17 when it was screened so it didn't convince me so much. Looking at it again just now, its not too bad and quite effective in some places but I found I couldn't quite believe the voice was coming from Aslan.

I agree! The movies didn’t cover his life but the books address it. I’m still holding out for a film. ;)

I don't remember reading a story about young Aragon in the books. Do you remember which book addressed it? I can dust off my copies lol.

They addressed some of the back story in The Silmarillion when discussing the history of Númenor and the Dúnedain. We don’t learn of his childhood. But I recall his arrival in Rivendell.

I’m guessing they’re filling in the gaps. I’d need to read The History of Middle-Earth to be certain. I’ll tackle that after The Unfinished Tales!

Oh, OK! I do remember reading about Numenor(I don't know how to affix the apostrophe) in the Silmarillion, but I need to read it again. It has been so many years since I read it, I have pretty much forgotten the details of the story. I remember they caused the world to be bent.

Here’s a nice recap. :)

I remember thinking Melkor was incredibly evil! Beyond anything I’d encountered. Purely bad to the bone! :p

He was! LOTR movies do not tell that Sauron was a disciple of Melkor. That was the one thing that they left out that I always thought was very important.

I agree. That was probably saved for other films. But in truth, The Silmarillion should have been first. That would have provided a sense of continuity to the films.

Rowling had the benefit of Tolkien’s example (and greater brevity!); she’s pursuing a similar course.
