The big question.... I am wondering if they will every come out with a Silmarillion movie? That would be the next JRR Tolkien thing on the menu!

The problem with creating a movie from the Silmarillion would be the fact that it is a collection of short stories. Maybe certain ones could be done, like how Sauron became so evil as a disciple of Melkor.

Yeah, that is the story of how Isildor got the ring of power. That should be very good. But it is only one story in the Silmarrilion.

Till we have Faces by CS Lewis is one of my favourite books. He retells the myth of Psyche from The Golden Ass, but in such an imaginative way, to represent the purpose of myth. I also love Abolition of Man, though not fiction, which seems almost prophetic sometimes.

There are great parts in Narnia, such as when the Lady of the Green Kirtle tries and convince the heroes in the Silver Chair, that her subterranean world is the only world, and Narnia but illusion. Essentially a Plato's Cave, but very well written. The Space Trilogy has some good points, too. All in all though, I much prefer Till we have Faces. His short essays and apologetic work, though not entertainment, are all worthwhile reading.

Not too much a fan of Tolkien. Read the Hobbit and the first Lord of the Rings book, but didn't resonate with me.

An interesting author to check out, another Inkling and close friend of both men and who influenced them as well, is Owen Barfield. His views on meaning and myth thread through their works. Narnia was dedicated to Barfield's daughter Lucy, too.

movie or book do you like (they do promote Christian ideals even tough some do not think so). Please no hatred post of either Christian author.

Big Fan of both authors fantasy works since childhood. And they inspired me to get into fantasy role playing in my teens. Interesting enough on that subject, the Lord of the Rings I think did a lot of good for Christianity. In my last days playing Dungeons and Dragons as a adult, the last time I did it, was for networking for work and other things like keeping job references warm. Basically what some folks do with golf, as an introvert I got to really work at that stuff. So when I learned my immediate boss was a DM I jumped at the chance to join his D&D group hoping to do what I could to break into software testings and software quality assurance in general. While I was in that group, I was the only Christian there out of about 8-10 people showing up most nights. And the times when Christianity came up, it tended to be very negative as far as stereotypes especially with things like Pat Robertson and the Moral Majority. And my fellow players tended to show their skepticism for it, even though they respected me, I was one of the few Christians they knew that they liked apparently.

Anyway when the first movies came out there was this book that came out called something like "Finding Christ in the Lord of the Rings" which covered the kind of typologies of the various characters in the book. Anyway, when that first movie came out, all my fellow players were really raving about it, but it wasn't just that they were actually speaking Christian language using words like "temptation", "salvation" etc. that I never heard them use before! At one time, I was going to point out the origin of those concepts in Tolkien's Faith, but I had trouble getting a word in edgewise, and when the din died down I decided not to thinking maybe them unconsciously entertaining those themes might cultivate them later rethinking their stance on Christianity.

I really like J.R.R. Tolkien's Tales from the Perilous Realm! I really love everything written by Tolkien. I also enjoy C.S. Lewis's works as well. I loved Surprised by Joy. I absolutely love C.S. Lewis's beautiful way with words in his essays. To me, there is no fantasy writer who can even begin to compare to Tolkien's genius. The Lord of the Rings trilogy will always be a favorite of mine.

I wish the JRR Tolkien works would have been published in chronological order. It has been aggrevating for me for the estate to revisit old tales.
Yeah, that is one of the reasons I really appreciate The Silmarillion.

There's another book of Tolkien's called The Children of Hurin, don't recall it having been made into a film, unless I am mistaken. Have a copy but never got round to reading it.

The Silmarillion I have read the creation myth chapter: The Music of the Ainur I think its called.

As regards the Hobbit I may read the book again, but was never really interested in the films - one film would have been sufficient, its a book a quarter of the length of LOTR and didn't need stretched out over three films!!

You know there is an animated version of The Hobbit(1977). I watched it with my children long before the recent versions came out.

Did Barfield write any fiction, do you know?

My good friend Screwtape has become quite powerful in the Lowerarchy. He has assigned hand picked field devils to all of you for your failure to mention the book about him.

I would say Hell hath no fury like a devil scorned, but technically his fury is from Hell.
