When my youngest daughter was about three she came running into the kitchen, grabbed my hand and said "Dad, quick come see. It's a bird with pockets!" I was mystified. She dragged me to the window --- it was a red-wing blackbird!

RWBBs have a very distinct call and they're really loud.
They're not related to crows, and are very aggressive and polygamous; one male may have up to 15 mates at a time.

I'm not a Christian, but I know a good song when I hear it. "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" is a gospel classic. It was originally associated with Ethel Waters. But I like the version by the great Mahalia Jackson. Probably the best gospel singer ever.

Very impressive singer.

Sparrows are often referred to as LBJs (little brown jobs) because there are about 35 different species and many of them look very similar. I couldn't use my air conditioner this last summer because house sparrows built a nest in it. I'm pretty sure they are an invasive species and not covered by the Migratory Act so it would have been OK to evict them, but I couldn't do it.

I think the white-throated sparrow is the most interesting; they effectively have 4 genders.

It depends on the type of sparrow as to whether or not it is considered invasive.

It is written in the book of Isaiah that we will be given wings as an eagle. There are other references as well regarding other birds, for instance, when Elijah was brought something to eat by a raven. Doves are also mentioned many times, as well as sparrows. It is also written that we will be comforted and protected amidst and under the feathers of God.

My wife is a serious bird lover. She worked at a raptor sanctuary for over 10 years. We have multiple feeders in the back yard. And we have an African Grey parrot, and a Goffin's cockatoo.

I hear the parrots are not the easiest birds to care for. I have a canary and some outdoor feeders.

Yes. Parrots are high-maintenance pets. Our birds are medium sized, but they still need separate, floor standing cages. We had to build an addition to our kitcen to make room. They're extremely intelligent. If the cages aren't locked, both birds know how to unlatch the doors and will let themselves out. Casper, our cockatoo, thrives on attention. If he thinks he's being ignored, he'll throw his food out of his cage and scream loud enough to wake the dead. (I can't believe sometimes our neighbors haven't called the cops.) Both birds will talk, but Gracie, our African grey, knows more words and expressions and has a much clearer voice. Parrots are also long-lived. We've had Gracie since she was 5 months old. She's now 29. We adopted Casper when he was 3 years old, so he's now about 7--still a youngster. If they stay healthy, they could both live to their 40s or 50s. Casper could definitely outlive us. Parrots are not for everyone. But they're great fun, very entertaining, and a pet you can love and enjoy for decades.

Sorry for going off-topic.

Birds are never off topic.
I learned the other day that parrots are one the few animals besides humans that truly dance. Lots of animals (especially birds) have mating dances but it's the always the same pattern and tempo regardless of any music being played. Parrots will actually change their moves in time with music.

My canary is a female so she doesn't sing. Every now and then she lets out a slow tweet but otherwise she's very quiet. I wanted low maintenance since she's my first pet bird.

don't have much of an interest in birds. interesting topic nonetheless.

I didn't either until I saw a youtube video about feeding birds in the winter and I thought, "There are no birds around in the winter!". So I bought some black sunflower seed, put it out one morning and a few minutes later, I saw a dozen bluejays lined up on the deck.

So I put more seed out and started keeping track of the different birdy visitors trying to figure out what species they were. Then I started birdwatching out of the yard, took a college ornithology class from Cornell, and now I'm one of those crazy bird people.

Last weekend I was at a fall festival and I was so excited when I saw a red-tailed hawk fly right over head and then so disappointed that no one else even noticed him.

In these parts it is forbidden to feed birds,

that will say in a built up area, many people living close,

There was a case of an 80 year old woman who fed birds from her balcony, this is not about those sweet colorful little things, which are rarely seen.

It is about gulls, crows and rooks,

if someone where to throw out a piece of bread,
there comes swarms, seemingly from nowhere.

The 80 yearold after many complaints from nieghbors
and after being warned, she did not stop.

She was evicted, she took the case to court but lost.

She had to move.

Given the noise level and aggressiveness of the birds, it's not unreasonable for the neighbors to complain, but I wonder if changing the food and feeder type would have been sufficient.
