I'll admit, I'm a bit of a star wars fan myself. I loved that one scene where they're literally combing the desert with giant combs.
No wait, that was a different movie...
I actually liked the first trilogy with episodes 1-3. Despite it's flaws, it still felt like star wars to me. It's hard to complain with episodes 4-6; they were so imaginative and revolutionary that they are still influencing today's culture, even 4 decades later.
However, I hated the Disney sequels, and it seems many others did as well. I knew they would be controversial and thus was cautiously optimistic, but still expected them to be creative and classic star wars. Although, as soon as I heard the intro theme to episode 7 in the theater, I knew it would be disappointing. It lacked the classic "punch" of the original score, and seemed to foreshadow the overall experience from watching the film itself.
They certainly delivered on it being controversial, in more ways than expected, and the plot for both episodes 7 & 8 seemed like lazy rehashes of the previous films. I can understand having throwbacks to those films, but it should have been more subtle, while giving us a completely new experience. The new films did offer some cool scenes and unique situations - such as the subplot of a storm trooper seeking redemption, and looking at the force in a new way. But overall, the stories were subpar to me and were all over the place, parts felt rushed or unnecessary, I felt no connection to the new characters, the controversial elements were completely pointless and distracting, the acting and dialogue made me sad, there was a lot of "telling" instead of "showing", and they even randomly went against the rules established in previous films - i.e., how can you kamikaze with a ship traveling at light speed when you supposedly enter slip-space? When did Leia learn to fly Superman style.....in space? And why was there no buildup to the revealing and destruction of Starkiller Base? The death stars came across as a highly menacing threat. The third time around they're like: "Hey guess what? We gots another one! And it's bigger, but still has the same weakness!" *blows up soon after*
I think the resolution of various elements should have waited until the last movie in the trilogy, such as Finn's redemption as a storm trooper (that climaxes with his defeat of Phasma, reflecting him completely overcoming his past). I would have also liked to see other elements fleshed out more to help establish a connection with the characters, instead of being tossed in at last minute. I guess we'll see how episode 9 goes.
Now to find that long lost, rumored Christmas special.
