This is the Al Smith Dinner and General Mattis was a guest. It's long but the funny part is at the beginning for about 10 mins. and the rest is serious but is well worth the listen. Enjoy.

Very cool speech and something about it all very much smells like NYC.

Well, folks, it IS the Al Smith dinner we are talking about. The speakers are supposed to crack a bunch of jokes.

Whoever wrote General Mattis' lines did okay, but you notice that most of them received only a smattering of polite, forced laughter from the gathering.

Truth hurts, even as a joke.

Who in attendance do you imagine was "hurt" by those jokes?
I don't know but you mentioned laughter being forced. IMHO that indicates something was hard to swallow or painful.

Donald's ego is going to need some ice cubes for all the burns.

It's more likely that they became a little leery of what the Gen. would say next. At a previous dinner they invited both Trump and Hillary. Trump became so rude and abusive towards Hillary that they actually booed him.
The Al Smith dinner is suppose to be fun with the roastings being good-natured.

I agree.

And that wouldn't be what most people understand by the expression "truth hurts."
