What function does the Holy Spirit have in the hearts of believers?

Oh Dear, the anti Holy Spirit guy has wandered into the room. Repent Dave L while you still breathe.
My post shows many false believers casting out demons and prophesying being rejected by Christ on the last day, never having known them. This profile fits only one brand of Church, and it's not the mainline churches.

Hi again Swordsman1, the passage that I posited about the dispute that arose in Acts 15 appears to be more about procedural concerns with the missionary journeys than with doctrinal matters, but Galatians 2:11, where Paul tells us that he had to rebuke Peter publically, is part of a passage that was concerned with nothing else.

Peter, and others, including Barnabas, decided to join the "party of the circumcision" in Galatia, and they were perverting the Gospel/teaching a different Gospel ("they were not straightforward about the truth of the Gospel" .. Gal 2:14a).

Yours and His,
David

Hi, I wouldn't say Peter's error was one of doctrine. He wasn't giving any teaching, but rather behaving hypocritically by not eating with the gentiles after he taught that they were equal in Christ with the Jews.

OK here is the reference: Joel 2:
28 And afterward, I will pour out My Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your old men will dream dreams,
your young men will see visions.

So, as you say all believers have this...

So all believers will Prophesy.

Is this something else the Holy Spirit does being resident in us?

Not necessarily. Not everything listed in Joel's prophecy occurs at the same time. It talks about the sun turning to darkness and the moon to blood. That doesn't occur until the end of the 'last days'. So some of the things listed may only occur at the beginning of the last days - such as 'Your sons and daughters will prophesy'.

I disagree. The Spirit might say: "You can lead a horse to water..."

So are you saying that the Holy Spirit guided you into the set of doctrines you subscribe to, but everyone who doesn't share your beliefs was given the same guidance but stubbornly refused to obey it?

“Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Matthew 7:22–23 (KJV 1900)
Jesus was clearly speaking these words about the ungodly, not to born again believers!
In using these words to silence those who believe in the ongoing gifts and ministry of the HS, you are accusing us of being unregenerate and ungodly!

I suggest you stop right there, before you stray further outside the forum rules!!

Most translations differ from that:

"But when I saw that their conduct was not in step with the truth of the gospel" ESV

"When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel," NIV

"But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel" ASV

"But when I saw that they weren’t acting consistently with the truth of the gospel" CEB

"But when I saw that they were not acting consistently with the truth of the gospel" ISV

"But when I saw that they walked not uprightly according to the truth of the gospel" KJV

"But when I saw that they were not behaving in a manner consistent with the truth of the gospel" MOUNCE

"But when I saw that they were not behaving consistently with the truth of the gospel" NET

etc, etc

This is the word in question....

Thayer's Greek Lexicon
STRONGS NT 3716: ὀρθοποδέω
ὀρθοποδέω, ὀρθοποδω; (ὀρθόπους with straight feet, going straight; and this from ὀρθός and πούς); to walk in a straight course; metaphorically, to act uprightly, Galatians 2:14 (cf. πρός, I. 3 f.). Not found elsewhere; (cf. Winer's Grammar, 26; 102 (96)).

By whatever means it was being taught or expressed, St. Paul’s concern was the “truth of the Gospel”, that St. Peter, in this case, was teaching against. “He [St. Peter] stood condemned” .. Galatians 2:11.

So I'm saying that the hearts of men are deafened by sin. So I'm saying that I am as susceptible to error as anyone. So I'm saying that this is why we are given the words written by the Prophets and the Apostles, so that the boundaries of what the Spirit is likely to operate in are known.

Peter wasn't teaching another gospel. He stood condemned because his was behaving contrary to the truth which he himself taught. Paul tells us exactly what he was doing. He was being a hypocrite.

I think the point of the passage is not that doing these things is incorrect, but that people failed to do the will of the Father.

Okay, but that doesn't explain why you disagree with my post.

Dave made reference to this scripture, you might like to raise that issue with Him.

Dave.

When the Christians began to experience this in the 70's it was across all mainline churches...

This was not an outpouring. It began at Azusa st. when Wm. Seymour thought his native african voodoo tongues were the same as bible tongues. He tried to mix them into his Wesley Methodism in Anderson Indiana through the Church of God who excommunicated him for it. He tried again in Los Angeles and the Assemblies of God came about because of it. They attracted many at an emotional level as they continue doing today. But it certainly has more to do with voodoo and Wesley Methodism than anything else. Loosley quoted from;

Dave I was at Spreydon Baptist Church for seven years in the seventies and the church exploded with new converts as did other mainline churches. The spirit was moving so remarkably that the pastoral staff flew in missionaries with many years of experience dealing with possession and such to assist in understanding what was genuine or not.

Agan Dave - this thread is not primarily about gifts, I would appreciate if we just talk about what the Holy Spirit's function is in all believers. I believe that potentially the work of the Holy Spirit in any believer is immense and we would well do to appreciate the potential impact of having the Creator of the Universe inside of us as a friend.
