Faith that is alive will over time produce fruits from that faith. From believing in Christ in a real way, we want to listen to Him and then (because of faith, because of His work on us) begin to do those things He said to us to do.

Here're some valuable verses about this --

"It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do."
Ephesians 2 NIV

1 “I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes a so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned."
...
9 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in his love. ... 12My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. ... 17This is my command: Love each other.
John 15 NIV

John 13:35 By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another."

James called these fruits 'works' ('deeds' in some translations), as you see Paul did also just above in Ephesians 2:10.--

14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."
James 2 NIV

As Christ said, we must both listen to what He said and do as He said:

24 “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Look at God's own examples in the Bible. To come into line with the truth and requirements of God's Word is to exercise a living faith; to say you believe when you do not do so is a dead faith. Look at the contrast in these passages below and you have your answer basically. You can likewise contrast every righteous person in the Bible with everyone who claimed to be the Lord's but was actually wicked, and you have many examples of the answer illustrated before your eyes.

James 2:14-26: "14 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,
16 And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? 17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works. 19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble. 20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? 22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect? 23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only. 25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way? 26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."

Romans 1:16-21: "16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; 19 Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: 21 Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened."

Luke 6:46-49: "46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say 47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great."

According to James, living faith is faith that is expressed through good works. James 2:17

Dead Faith: Bob sees that Mary is hungry, and that Mary does not have the means to feed herself. Bob merely believes (as the demons also do) that Jesus Christ is God's Son who died for Bob's sin. Bob also has the means to feed Mary with little cost to himself. Nonetheless, Bob ignores her need and does not help.

Living Faith: Bob sees that Mary is hungry, and that Mary does not have the means to feed herself. Bob has faith in Jesus Christ and also has the means to feed Mary with little cost to himself. Bob joyfully uses his resources and feeds Mary.

What is dead/living faith? Could you give some examples of each? Thanks.
From Scripture, dead faith is faith without works. (directly stated)

True faith is faith with works. (directly stated also, in Scripture).

Men keep continuing to debate what works are, etc .... < shrugs > those debates won't stop until Jesus returns. (although they do stop in some assemblies of Ekklesia who don't even think about debating that - we just do what Jesus and the Father Say to do, in line with Scripture, always in Harmony and in Union (Echad) with Jesus and with the Father )

James is a good book of the Bible that defines what I think you're after. Essentially:
Dead faith is one that's just theory, and has no practical living in it.
Living faith is one that obeys Christ's command to love others.
For starters, I think it's that simple.

One is conditional faith, the other is unconditional.
Conditionality is fear-based and deceptive; e.g., a person needing something for self-will.
Unconditionality is love-based and true; e.g., a person accepting anything from God's will.
