The crux of the matter here is that the news media today lack or more accurately lost even the basic journalistic principle of fact checking. Pushing stories out first & fast. Accuracy can be verified later. Retraction and corrections are an option also for later.

It erodes trust. Plain and simple. Can you imagine telling the IRS you made a slight mistake in filing your taxes and expect them to let you refile again later without penalty?

There will always be fake news. Use to be called yellow journalism. Saying that a private individual posting false or incorrect information to justify the error (deliberate or otherwise) of giant news companies is cognitive dissonance.

It's like saying a professional baseball player missing most hits is equal to your 10 year old kid missing most hits.

QFT!

Care to address any of the posts specifically? Because I don't see anybody defending ABC here.

Hard to argue with this:

The only thing fake about any of that was whether or not that video showed Turkey.

Well, what do you think the topic of the thread is about?

That is an interesting way to defend ABC for publishing a fake video.

They let you go without even a slap on the wrist? In my country you get a penalty regardless.

It depends on if you owe or are owed generally. ;)

To me it is less about human mistake and owning up. It's about failing the basics of your profession. I'm an IT consultant and if I don't even know how to do a simple ping command, I shouldn't have any business in IT. It is different than a retiree not knowing how to ping.

Have you never pinged the wrong address by mistake? Deployed something incorrectly?

So as a news company if you can't verify facts before posting than maybe you shouldn't be in this line of business. Wrong news information can cause massive repercussion.
Are we to believe you expect perfection from anything other then God? We are still human no matter how hard we try.

We must hold the media companies to a higher standard compared to a edgy teenager posting memes on 4chan. Well to be honest I trust edgy memes more than news nowadays LOL :D

We do hold them to higher standards. I just don't think we should hold them to impossible standards.

Just the Mockingbird Media disseminating the desired propaganda from the M.I.C./Deep State to herd the masses towards supporting evermore war that our presence only prolongs.
Do you even understand what Project Mockingbird was?

Nothing to see here, folks.
I agree with this completely unironically.

Hard to argue with this:

You're right. It is hard to argue with that, because I was right.

Well, what do you think the topic of the thread is about?

That is an interesting way to defend ABC for publishing a fake video.

Perhaps it would help you understand my point a little better if you took the time to read my entire post as well as the one to which I was responding. This is the post to which I was responding:

Yes...I heard about this and well quite frankly with all the other lies that the MSM media drums out...I'm not surprised they attempted another fake news story to try and smear the POTUS...I suspect it will not be the last one either.

And this is my response:

Lol, wut? Turkey IS attacking the Kurds. That war is actually happening. That's on Trump. The only thing fake about any of that was whether or not that video showed Turkey.

Here's some real video from the region. Does this not smear Trump so much?

<video with actual footage>

To clarify: the story about the war isn't fake. There is a real war. Turkey really is attacking the Kurds. It really is the result of Trump's hasty troop withdrawal. That much is a fact and would be a fact no matter what video they'd put up there. They could've put up a cat video, or a re-run of Teletubbies or no video at all and the war still would've been real. That ABC used bogus video does not negate the realities of the war that is actually happening.

Nowhere in this thread have I defended ABC; in fact I've repeatedly criticized them for this. In that post, I was only rebutting @Zanting's absurd claim that this is a fake news story designed to smear Trump. This is a real story and Trump smeared himself with his own actions.

People are able to discuss more than one thing at a time.

In this case sloppy journalism is getting to the point of being the norm, and it can disturb people along with world events.

People shouldn't be prohibited from being concerned over just one topic. What is happening in Turkey/Syria is very serious, and so is lack of proper information on a continuous basis.
I agree. Frankly, I find the error by ABC to be appalling. If it was a deliberate act of falsification it was ludicrously dumb. However, the tenor of many posts from the OP suggests an agenda based on attacking the press, not because they make errors, but because he does not like some of the well based facts they generate that paint the President in a negative light.

That's a pity, since it creates a partisan atmosphere in which we cannot objectively discuss the issue, or certainly cannot do so easily.

In short, the media should be held to account for the accuracy and objectivity of their reporting.
The same applies to the President. At the moment - regrettably - I see very little to make me trust anything that comes out of the President's mouth.
Here is some advice. America is Great when it works with its friends and allies globally. Get yourself a President who understands this and does not treat those friends and allies with contempt. Then we can focus on questioning imbecilic levels of reporting.

Two things can be right at the same time. We want better standards in news media and being informed about current events.
I agree, but see above.

Same can be ask about you on many other issues that are not within your immediate location or interest. World is running out of helium which is used for more than just filling up balloons. Many homeless people will go hungry tonight. A woman is currently being assaulted in a part of the world. You are going to sleep well knowing these facts I gander.
I readily acknowledge these issues. All I see from the OP is a single-minded attack on the media (tinged with conspiracy theory) as a means of defending Trump.

ABC News ‘slaughter in Syria’ footage appears to come from a Kentucky gun range

ABC aired supposedly shocking footage Monday and Sunday purporting to be from the frontline battle between the Syrian Kurds and the invading Turks. The only problem is, the footage appears to come from a nighttime machine gun demonstration at the Knob Creek Gun Range in West Point, Kentucky.

“This video, obtained by ABC News, appears to show the fury of the Turkish attack on the border town of Tal Abyad,” senior foreign correspondent Ian Pannell, who is in Syria, said Monday on Good Morning America

Earlier, on Sunday, ABC News anchor Tom Llamas also aired the allegedly shocking footage, claiming it showed a fierce Turkish attack on Kurdish civilians.

“The situation rapidly spiraling out of control in northern Syria. One week since President Trump ordered U.S. forces out of that region, effectively abandoning America’s allies in the fight against [the Islamic State],” he said.

Llamas then described the video as it aired on-screen.

“This video right here appearing to show Turkey’s military bombing Kurdish civilians in a Syrian border town. The Kurds, who fought alongside the U.S. against ISIS. Now, horrific reports of atrocities committed by Turkish-backed fighters on those very allies,” he added.

The intro to the show he anchored, ABC World News Tonight, also claimed of the footage: “A border town, bombarded by Turkey’s military!”

How can you believe anything from them?

Hardly earth shattering. What difference does it make to the story?

Giving the enormous output of news every day occasional errors are inevitable. If you think fractional errors in any area of anything are so vital you should basically stop doing pretty much anything at all, and trust no-one, nothing and nowt.

They made a mistake and withdrew the video after questions about the accuracy were raised. It happens.

Lol! Was not a "mistake"! It was an intentional attempt to manipulate viewers. Shame, shame, shame.

Archangl86;

You can't really be that naive, right? How does a mistake like this make it through every editor, producer, fact-checker & so on in the process of making a piece that a dozen or so people would have had a hand in, and no one catches it?

Ok, they're not malevolent actors. They're just so stupid that even occams razor thinks they're lying.

And somehow people still go to them for information.

This doesn't change the fake news reporting by CNN in any stretch of the imagination or their intention...in fact...it's reminds me of the mockery of the house and due process Adam Schiff displayed with his "parody " of the phone transcript.

And seriously...how is it that MSM wants to spin this as being on the POTUS...there has always been friction between the people of Syria and Turkey...they have been fighting amongst themselves for hundreds of years???

I don't like the press for a numerous reasons, and it has nothing to do with the President. They make to many errors in the rush to get out headlines, and correct themselves afterwards. It's not so much the reporters fault, but the powers that be that need that bottom line to be healthy. In the meantime, we have many that don't catch the errors - due to being busy, not keep up, Life Happens, etc - and will believe it to their dying day. Heck, I have found many stories from the media that repeat their 'error' they claimed was truth later on.

I have had issued with them for many years, and that was prior to this administration. The media has known there are trust issues with their tactics at times, and half hearted admitted it and then justified it later on. lol something they would act like attack dogs if someone else did this.

When 'news' decides they want truth more than profit? We might get back to something a bit more normal. You will ALWAYS have a slight slant - we are humans after all. Yet, when you really just want the facts and not the spin? You have a hard time finding it today. Clickbait to make sure those headlines look juicy, but the content doesn't have to be? It's all the rage today.

I'm glad you were amused. Sadly, I've found little that is amusing in your posts and much that is disturbing in the points you choose not to address.
(By the way, my "focus" on the President arises purely as a response to the obsession of those who seek to defend his disgraceful and shameful behaviour. At the moment I place you firmly in that category. You can show me to be mistaken by posting some information critical of the President.)

The lying press lied. It happens.

What other instances like this have happened with ABC?

They were caught this time. How many times were they not caught?

Actually, what was being said wasn't between Turkey and Syria. It was the fight with the Kurds.

Nope, the Kurds are not a state, the media's incessantly calling them "our allies" notwithstanding.

The U.S. has many International "allies" over the years who are not states. I'm not sure what your point is.
