California to legalize eating roadkill

Those wanting to eat the roadkill would need to obtain a salvage permit in exchange for information about the animal, where and how it was killed in an effort to eliminate waste of carcasses and to better understand how to make roads safer for drivers and animals.

&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&

We have some serious problems here in Ca.
Homelessness, rats, overspending, border sewage coming into the United States.

Good to know that we can now
check off the Roadkill issue.

Maybe we need to pass another Bill
making it legal to run over rats?

Hitting deer......but with a purpose. Interesting development.
I envision special auto models with wildlife options.
Maybe variations like "catch and release" or "catch and carry" bumpers?

If I inadvertently harvest a deer with my truck, and the meat is not too mangled , then I would like to be able to fill my freezer with it.

What I don't understand, per the article, is how this is supposed to save lives. The law pertains to post-event activity. There's nothing pre-cautionary about the law. If anything, it will turn roadside, living animals into targets.

There are already similar laws/procedures here in New Hampshire. One can get on the list so the State Police/Department of Transport will call you to salvage roadkill (especially deer and moose moose). It helps keep people safe by removing these large carcasses from the roadway, so they are not hit by other drivers causing another accident, and means the meat doesn’t go to waste. It hasn’t meant that drivers target animals here in this state (car repairs can be costly and inconvenient from hitting a deer, and potentially fatal from hitting moose - and the person salvaging the meat is not necessarily the same person who hit the animal).

That makes sense. I didn't even think about a moose. Those things are massive. Definitely don't want to go out of your way to hit those.

I just looked up the law here in Virginia. We have to report a collision with an animal so they can remove it. If it is in season, we can keep it so long as the law officer can determine it was killed by the collision (or injured to such an extent as it requires death). And that pertains to deer or bear.

§ 29.1-539. Keeping deer or bear struck by motor vehicle; procedure to be followed by driver

This is totally ironic. California voters have passed ballot issues in the past that favored animal welfare. It also became the first state to have a local declawing ban (in West Hollywood). In San Francisco, dogs can walk in public off leash, so this idea would turn canine friends into food.

Did people in California know eating roadkill was illegal? Was the state prosecuting people for "stealing" roadkill off the highway? I can't imagine people getting a permit for this, I imagine most roadkill diners grab their meal in the spur of the moment. That's what it's like here in Michigan where people fairly routinely pick up dead deer off the side of the road.

Maybe informative, maybe tattling on Michiganders

I pulled up the law here in Michigan and apparently hauling away a deer or bear requires a permit. That's a permit almost no one is actually getting, especially the folks who know how to butcher down a deer.
