It's not that they refuse to read as much as how they interpret what they read ... due to what we'll call Christendom's religious denominational indoctrination. If all born again Christians were led by the abiding presence of His Spirit there would be a unified body of Believers ... not all these divisive manmade walls of religious denominational indoctrination.

1 John 2:27
As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for
anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true
and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
However, many Christians that wear a theology doctorate on their sleeve or shoulder believe that the nine supernatural Spiritual Gifts passed away around 100 AD. Thus, they contend the need for theologians to teach even Spirit-filled Christians the correct interpretation of scripture.

IMO, a Christian that thinks his/her theological doctorate makes him/her more insigthful of the correct interpretation of scripture is deceived. Just as Paul as a Pharisee at one time thought he could see until he later realized he was spiritually blind. So too with most of today's theologians with their doctorate degree proudly displayed in their office.

Ever heard of the Pharisees and the Saducees or a reference to Judaizers in Paul's letters ?

I believe in certain instances, they refuse to read. It is not re-interpretation of the text at all. If I said that "the sheep jumps over the fence," that is exactly what it means if it fits the context of what I am talking about. There is only one obvious meaning to the really important parts of Scripture that are essential to our faith in the New Covenant. I have shown verses or passages to people, and they are simply not reading the text in what it plainly says. They have a belief, and they ignore what they are reading and or they try to fit their belief somehow into the text when it does not really fit (Kind of like trying to cram a round peg into a square hole).

For many professing believers scripture is merely a nice suggestion and not a rule for life.

I believe a person cannot have or be born again without having an experience with the Bible involving Christ and their forgiveness. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17).

I used the term "professing" deliberately.

You imagine something in th text that is not there. Nowhere does it say that the brother who is to marry the deceased brother is already married. Please point out the text where it says that. It does not say that he shall take another wife, etc.
So what is to become of the deceased's estate if the brother does not take her? Please point out in the text what is supposed to happen if the brother is already married.

FYI - in that society everyone was married at about age 14 or 15. Some were married as young as "nine years plus one day." **

If I can give my two cents here, If this wasn't mentioned earlier in this post(I do apologize if it was), this whole concept of what the bible is, goes far beyond what is shown physically. If you read the bible without being guided by the Holy Spirit, you will be thrown off because you are seeing from a worldly lens, for example some of the situations that happen in the OT. I speak for myself prior to becoming born again christian. I would read verses here and there but nothing would stick, it was more of a checklist to read the bible to say I was a "christian".

Does the Bible speak about this?

Deuteronomy 8:3
He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the Lord.

Matthew 4:4
But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’

I think some people quit reading parts of the Bible because they find it confusing and just read the parts that encourage them.
Some people won't read song of Solomon because they find it too sexy.
Some people won't read the story of Samson for example to their children because they find it too bloody.
Those are just a few examples.

They are probably too scared to read certain parts, because they don't understand it, and sounds scary.

I remember that I didn't like reading parts of the OT because it seemed so dark but God called me to read it all and opened my eyes to understand it better.

Since the Bible wasn't written as a book, then no.

I am glad.

I don’t see how the format of God’s Word has to do with God communicating certain truths by it. While the traditional Holy Bible is a collection of 66 books, they all have a connection to each other. Many of the books can speak collectively about many spiritual truths.

The traditional Holy Bible has more than 66 books. The number varies between the ancient Churches. The trimming down to 66 book, amongst the newer churches, came after the 16th century.

I think a lot of people have a hard time reading Judges. Such as in Judges 11, Jephthah sacrifices his daughter to God, stuff like that.

Because they still consider themselves sinners and not sons.

I would say that we New Covenant believers need to consider ourselves as saints in the fact that we are spiritually changed to the point where we are living like saints (Because of God's grace). For the woman who was truly grateful of God's grace kept kissing Christ's feet as others mocked. The Bible refers to believers as "saints." A sinning "saint" is a contradiction in terms. But many today will say that they are sinners [presently speaking] saved by grace, or they will say that they are sons solely on the basis of the finished work of the cross and it is in nothing that they do (Which implies disobedience of some kind). But God's grace teaches us to deny ungodliness and to live righteously in this present world (Titus 2:11-12). I believe it is for this reason, that many are not really reading the Bible, but they are inserting their belief system into the Bible. I imagine some either must read fast through the portions in the New Testament that are uncomfortable to them, or they skip over certain verses, or they label these verses as "bad" [i.e. It's the Law or Legalism] and so they shut down their mind when reading these verses and they are just reciting the words [in their mind or with their mouth] without any real thought about what they actually say so as to apply it to their life. For when I show certain believers 1 John 1:7 and ask for them to explain it, many of them really cannot do so in light of what the text plainly says. They have to invent something that goes beyond what this verse actually says based upon what their teachers say, and it is not based upon just reading and believing the text plainly as they would read any other English text normally.

The Levite and his concubine in Judges 19 is what did it for me. I had to stop and take a break and just stick to the New Testament for a little while. Granted, I went back to reading of course. I knew that no Word of God can be rejected. There was a message in Judges 19 that even pointed to Christ. The point being that sin is disgusting to GOD and it repulses Him, and that He loved us so much that He sent His Son who suffered in such a way that was beyond our imagining to save us.

The traditional Holy Bible has more than 66 books. The number varies between the ancient Churches. The trimming down to 66 book, amongst the newer churches, came after the 16th century.

The additional books teach that a believer can work magic, it teaches the existence of purgatory (Which is contradictory in terms of Hebrews 9:27 and other verses), and prayers to the dead or contacting or channeling familiar spirits (Which is the same thing as necromancy because the purpose of bringing up the dead or channeling a dead spirit is to communicate with them - as we see in the story of King Saul and the witch of Endor). Also, these extra deuterocanonical books do not have the same evidences backing them as being divine like the rest of the Bible. To see what I am talking about, check out my Blogger article here that shows forth evidences that back up the Bible:

This is a thought provoking question. There was a time i refused and/or avoided reading the book of Job like the plague (i had difficulty reading about his inexplicable suffering)....

but i don't refuse to read parts of the Bible to avoid the "truth" in those difficult books, that get us to praying and delving harder into studying them.

One of the most edifying and blessings that God granted me was in His helping me to understand and embrace what the "fear of the Lord" means. It was like He opened a treasure box when i began studying it, through the study of the book of Job.
