A few months ago a well know CF poster (not mentioning any names) posted a picture of homeless people in California which was actually an immigrant detention center in Arizona.

Indeed.

The topic of the post is not about other posters -

Here ya go - you seem to have forgotten

ABC News ‘slaughter in Syria’ footage appears to come from a Kentucky gun range

ABC aired supposedly shocking footage Monday and Sunday purporting to be from the frontline battle between the Syrian Kurds and the invading Turks. The only problem is, the footage appears to come from a nighttime machine gun demonstration at the Knob Creek Gun Range in West Point, Kentucky.

“This video, obtained by ABC News, appears to show the fury of the Turkish attack on the border town of Tal Abyad,” senior foreign correspondent Ian Pannell, who is in Syria, said Monday on Good Morning America

Earlier, on Sunday, ABC News anchor Tom Llamas also aired the allegedly shocking footage, claiming it showed a fierce Turkish attack on Kurdish civilians.

“The situation rapidly spiraling out of control in northern Syria. One week since President Trump ordered U.S. forces out of that region, effectively abandoning America’s allies in the fight against [the Islamic State],” he said.

Llamas then described the video as it aired on-screen.

“This video right here appearing to show Turkey’s military bombing Kurdish civilians in a Syrian border town. The Kurds, who fought alongside the U.S. against ISIS. Now, horrific reports of atrocities committed by Turkish-backed fighters on those very allies,” he added.

The intro to the show he anchored, ABC World News Tonight, also claimed of the footage: “A border town, bombarded by Turkey’s military!”

How can you believe anything from them?

Indeed, the topic was how do you trust someone that posts fake news? Perhaps one way is to look at how they responded to it. As far as I can tell ABC issued a retraction/apology. That seems a mature response to accidentally posting a completely fake item. I think I'd continue to trust a group/person that had the integrity to issue a public apology over the mistake, rather than ignoring it, or just shutting the topic down.

ABC apologizes for mistaking Kentucky gun range video for Turkish bombing of Syria

Thoughts?

The only reason they issued a statement, is because they got caught -

It doesn't address the why or the how a major news organization did not know the difference between footage from a battlefield and a shooting range. Do they not have fact checkers? Where are the standards?

There is a big difference between a poster opening click bait threads (not mentioning names), and an organization that millions of people tune into for news.

Through what means have you determined this?

Any chance another option is that a narrative was being pushed and someone found "scary war footage" to make the footage fit the narrative of the story?

Possible of course, but it would be terribly shortsighted because in this day and age everything can and will be checked especially if the topic is major and controversial.

So either someone messed up , or did his own thing damaging the networks reputation for practically nothing.

It is totally unbelievable, illogical and unreasonable to believe this was some sort of coordinated effort by the ABC news.

There's no evidence of that, but even if there was, so what? It doesn't detract from the fact that when they got caught rather than running away, or "shutting the thread down", so to speak, they posted an apology.

Someone made a mistake, it's not that big a deal.

You remember when Trump stood in front of a parody coat of arms in which the Eagle was holding golf clubs?

Dumb things happen. It's not that big a deal.

Yes...I heard about this and well quite frankly with all the other lies that the MSM media drums out...I'm not surprised they attempted another fake news story to try and smear the POTUS...I suspect it will not be the last one either.

Lol, wut? Turkey IS attacking the Kurds. That war is actually happening. That's on Trump. The only thing fake about any of that was whether or not that video showed Turkey.

Here's some real video from the region. Does this not smear Trump so much?

The crux of the matter here is that the news media today lack or more accurately lost even the basic journalistic principle of fact checking. Pushing stories out first & fast. Accuracy can be verified later. Retraction and corrections are an option also for later.

It erodes trust. Plain and simple. Can you imagine telling the IRS you made a slight mistake in filing your taxes and expect them to let you refile again later without penalty?

There will always be fake news. Use to be called yellow journalism. Saying that a private individual posting false or incorrect information to justify the error (deliberate or otherwise) of giant news companies is cognitive dissonance.

It's like saying a professional baseball player missing most hits is equal to your 10 year old kid missing most hits.

They have not lost the principle of fact checking that I have seen. At least not as far as the major news organizations go. They do rush more then they used to due to how the business has changed. It certainly is no where near as bad as it was at the nations founding.

No, that is not what cognitive dissonance is. Cognitive dissonance is holding two antithetical ideas at the same time. Such as believing in a free press that must be held accountable to the government. That would be cognitive dissonance. :)

No, it is like saying that humans make mistakes and we should hold them accountable for how they handle the mistakes. If they own up to their error and try to correct it is much to be preferred over never acknowledging their errors.

They made a mistake and withdrew the video after questions about the accuracy were raised. It happens.

It should have been a pretty easy mistake to correct prior to reporting. If you look at the video? You can see an audience watching. Literally. An audience watching as they fire stuff while holding their flashlights.

Someone there needs a good talking too. How many war zones have an audience watching while holding flashlights?!

They let you go without even a slap on the wrist? In my country you get a penalty regardless.

To me it is less about human mistake and owning up. It's about failing the basics of your profession. I'm an IT consultant and if I don't even know how to do a simple ping command, I shouldn't have any business in IT. It is different than a retiree not knowing how to ping.

So as a news company if you can't verify facts before posting than maybe you shouldn't be in this line of business. Wrong news information can cause massive repercussion.

We must hold the media companies to a higher standard compared to a edgy teenager posting memes on 4chan. Well to be honest I trust edgy memes more than news nowadays LOL :D

Unfortunately today you have can't just read one news source. YOu have to go to multiple ones, and get little pieces of the story, and then put them together yourself. You don't have one source that puts all the pieces together for you anymore.

It's all about the bottom line today. Get a flashy headline, and put parts of the story in there - with the recommended spin of course. Then you see another flashy headline, and you get tidbits of additional information. Then - of course - going to a third to get more information. Then everyone wonders why no one has the whole story, and there are different spins on it gearing towards three different directions.

When you bring in the cash wanted? Higher standards aren't needed.

How strongly the media gets defended is amazing to me.
Are the Turks currently attacking the Kurds? Has this been made possible because of Trumps decision to withdraw US troops? Do you approve of the attacks on the Kurds? Are you aware that the Kurds were of great importance in overcoming the threat of Isis?

In short, do you seriously believe it is more important to attack the media for a faulty news story (regardless of the cause) than to focus on the violence currently being perpetrated by the Turks on the Kurds, and the role of the President in facilitating that violence?

And if the answer to that question is "yes", then how do you sleep at night?

People are able to discuss more than one thing at a time.

In this case sloppy journalism is getting to the point of being the norm, and it can disturb people along with world events.

People shouldn't be prohibited from being concerned over just one topic. What is happening in Turkey/Syria is very serious, and so is lack of proper information on a continuous basis.

Two things can be right at the same time. We want better standards in news media and being informed about current events.

And if the answer to that question is "yes", then how do you sleep at night?

Same can be ask about you on many other issues that are not within your immediate location or interest. World is running out of helium which is used for more than just filling up balloons. Many homeless people will go hungry tonight. A woman is currently being assaulted in a part of the world. You are going to sleep well knowing these facts I gander.
