I came across these verses, which I are part of the 1st century Jerusalem/Temple discourse/parousia, and found some differences in the wording between the Ninevites [standing up G450]nd Queen of the South [being roused G1453].

Both Matthew and Luke mention this event.
I thought it might be interesting to look more closely at these "end time" verses.

450. anistemi from 303 and 2476;
to stand up (literal or figurative, transitive or intransitive):--arise, lift up, raise up (again), rise (again), stand up(-right).
303. ana a primary preposition and adverb;
properly, up; but (by extension) used (distributively) severally, or (locally) at (etc.)
2476. histemi a prolonged form of a primary stao stah'-o (of the same meaning, and used for it in certain tenses);
to stand (transitively or intransitively),

Matthew 12
34
Offspring of vipers! How can you who are evil speak good things? For from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 A good man from a good treasure brings good things, and an evil man from evil treasure brings evil things. 36 For I say to you that every idle word that people will speak, they will give an answer for it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified and by your words you will be condemned." 38 Then some of the Scribes and Pharisees responded and they were saying to him, "Teacher we wish to see a sign from you." 39 But he answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous generation seeks a sign and a sign will not be given to it except the sign of Jonah the Prophet. 40 For just as Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights, thus The Son of Man will be in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

41 `Men Ninevites shall be standing up<450> in the judging with this generation and they shall be condemning it,
That they repent<3340> into the proclamation of Jonah and behold! more of Jonah here.

Luke 11:
27
And while he was speaking these things, a woman raised her voice from the crowd and she said to him, "Blessing to the womb that carried you and to the breasts that suckled you." 28 He said to her, "Blessings to those who have heard the word of God and keep it."
29 And when the crowds were assembling he began to say, "This wicked generation seeks for a sign and a sign will not be given to it except the sign of Jonah the Prophet." 30 "For just as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites thus also the Son of the Man shall be to this generation."
31 "The Queen of The South shall stand in judgment with the people of this generation, and she shall condemn them, for she came from the far side of the land that she might hear the wisdom of Solomon and behold, he who is greater than Solomon is here."

32 'Men, Ninevites shall be standing-up<450> in the judging with this generation, and shall be condemning<2632 it,
That they repent<3340> at the proclamation of Jonah and behold! greater/more<4119> of Jonah here

Solomon and the Queen of Sheba are mentioned in the OT.

"queen" AND "solomon" occurs 25 times in 10 verses in the NKJV.

1Ki 10
1 Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to test him with hard questions.
13 Now King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired, whatever she asked, besides what Solomon had given her according to the royal generosity. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.

1 Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon, she came to Jerusalem to test Solomon with hard questions, having a very great retinue, camels that bore spices, gold in abundance, and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon, she spoke with him about all that was in her heart.
12 Now King Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all she desired, whatever she asked, much more than she had brought to the king. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.

"THIS GENERATION" in Bible

Matthew 12

so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Matthew 16

Since Jesus mentions the Ninevites and Jonah, I decided to go to the OT and find out more info on Nineveh from both the Bible and historical sources. Fascinating study.

Nimrob is shown as building the City in the land of Assyria.

Nineveh is mentioned in 8 chapters of the OT

Gen 10

8 Cush begot Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one on the earth.
9 He was a mighty hunter before the LORD; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.”
11 From that land he went to Assyria and built Nineveh, Rehoboth Ir, Calah,

Mic 5:6
They shall waste with the sword the land of Assyria, And the land of Nimrod at its entrances;
Thus He shall deliver us from the Assyrian, When he comes into our land And when he treads within our borders.
=================================

Isa 36:1
Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and took them.
Isa 37:37
So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went away, returned home, and remained at Nineveh.

============================
Jonah 3
2 “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you.”
3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD.
Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey[fn] in extent.
4 And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day's walk. Then he cried out and said, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.
6 Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes.
7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water.
===========================
Nah 1:1
The burden against Nineveh
. The book of the vision of Nahum the Elkoshite.
Nah 2:8
Though Nineveh of old was like a pool of water, Now they flee away.
“Halt! Halt!” they cry; But no one turns back.
Nah 3:7
It shall come to pass that all who look upon you Will flee from you, and say,
Nineveh is laid waste! Who will bemoan her?' Where shall I seek comforters for you?”
Zep 2:13
And He will stretch out His hand against the north,
Destroy Assyria, And make Nineveh a desolation, As dry as the wilderness.

Some history on Nineveh:

https://www.bible-history.com/biblestudy/nineveh.html

http://www.public.iastate.edu/~cfford/342worldhistoryearly.html
Ancient Nineveh
Capital of the Assyrian Empire

Nineveh, Assyria

The history of civilization is littered with the ruins of once proud and mighty cities.
Nineveh was situated on the eastern side of the Tigris river just across from modern Mosul, Iraq's second largest city built on the western side of the Tigris.

Nineveh took its turn as one of three cities to be the capital of Assyria, whose rule over Mesopotamia dates back to 2400 BC and was an incredible civilization that rose from humble beginnings into a fearsome empire that ruled much of known world until its fall in 612 BC.

Because we read of the judgments upon Assyria we might tend to look upon them as some demon-possessed frothing people of whom nothing comes but evil. But the truth for Nineveh and the Assyrian Empire is true of every nation on earth. They had many kinds of people, subject to the cultural norms of the time, and doing the best they can to raise their children, survive and prosper. God through Jonah showed great mercy on its people because they repented hearing the word of God. (8th Century BC )

The Assyrians brought many scientific, philosophical and practical advances to humanity including many inventions that we take for granted today. Everyday most of us lock our doors when we leave the house, locks and keys were invented in Assyria.
They also invented a system that kept time and ascribed 360 degrees to a circle. They are given credit for inventing paved roads, the first postal system, the first use of iron, the first libraries, the first plumbing, flush toilets and aqueducts.
They came up with the first governmental administration of dividing of territories ruled by local governors reporting to a central authority.

The military rulers, as in many other nations, could be a brutal breed. They ruled their empire and subdued nations with absolute terror.
=============================
It is mercifully interesting to note that after the fall of Nineveh, the Assyrian people did not disappear, they were simply ruled by others. Assyrians were some of the first converts by the earlier church and they became a thriving Christian community sending missionaries through out the eastern world. Today there is still an Assyrian Church with an amazing history and communities throughout the world.

The Assyrian empire became extremely great and powerful with NINEVEH as its center, all the way until its final destruction by the Chaldeans and the Medes. Nineveh was located in a very desirable place, east of the Tigris River in a very fertile plain. T
oday the ancient ruins are located just opposite of the present day city of Mosul. NINEVEH was also famous in the ancient world because it was a center for the worship of Ishtar (Astarte) the fertility goddess.

The size of NINEVEH is revealed in the Bible, in Jonah 3:3 and 4:11 (A 3 days journey in breadth with over 120,000 people). The classical writers describe NINEVEH as being over 60 miles wide. The city of Nineveh is described in Genesis 10:11 as having been founded by Nimrod, the hunter who built the tower of Babel and led the world into a rebellion against God. The Old Testament also mentions NINEVEH in relation to the prophet Jonah who preached judgment against NINEVEH, and afterward the city repented. The prophet Nahum predicted NINEVEH\'s destruction which came in 612 BC, and the famous city was never rebuilt. In the New Testament Jesus commended the inhabitants of NINEVEH for repenting at the preaching of Jonah, while condemning the Jewish leaders for resisting His own message.

========================
G2920 κρίσις (krisis), occurs 48 times in 47 verses

All these verses appear to concern a certain "generation" and judgment on a "city/cities".

Mat 10:15
“Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!
Mat 11:22
“But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon in the day of judgment than for you.

Mat 23
23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone.
33 “Serpents, brood of vipers! How can you escape the judging of the gehenna fire?

Used in 2 verses of Mark.

The Greek word used for "dust" # 5522 in Mark 6 is used in only 1 other verses in the entire NT.
1st century Jerusalem in Revelation 18!

Mar 6:11

“And whoever[fn] will not receive you nor hear you, when you depart from there, shake off the dust<5522> under your feet as a testimony against them.
Assuredly, I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!”

G5522 χοῦς (chous), occurs 2 times in 2 verses

The Great City/Harlot/Queen Revelation chapts 17-19

Revelation 18:
18 and they cried<2896>, observing the smoke of Her firing<4451>, saying, "What like to the great City?"
19 and they cast dust<5522> upon their heads, and cried<2896>, lamenting<2799>, weeping and mourning<3996> saying,
"Woe! woe! the great City! in which are rich all those having ships<4143> in the sea, out of Her preciousness<5094>,

20 ‘Be making merry<2165> over Her, O heaven, and the Saints, the Apostles and the Prophets,
that the GOD judges the judgment of ye out of Her!’

Technically, when the Queen of the South and the people of Nineveh farm raised they will be raised with EVERY generation. Every generation, INCLUDING those of the first century also.

I understand these are who statements not when statements. They don't tell us the time. They don't tell us when the judgment will occur. They only tell us who will be involved in one specific interchange.

observes that the unsealing of evil in revelation 9. Foreshadows the unsealing of evil after the Millennium in revelation 20.

Soon after Evil is unsealed at the beginning of Revelation 9 soon. The forces of darkness are crossing. The Euphrates, the River of Babylon to attack the Great City. Of first century Jerusalem. Similarly, after the unsealing of evil after the Millennium. The forces of darkness. Soon, a mass against the camp of the Saints. The new Jerusalem after the Millennium.

I should type up my own auto response to this - you use it so often - but my line of thought has been that maybe if I keep rewording my response, at some point, it will maybe eventually make sense to you.
I believe this passage is saying that, basically, the Queen of Sheba and the men of Nineveh were from a whole other culture (they weren't Jewish.....they didn't grow up learning Hebrew Scriptures) but they believed that God is the One and only Lord of Lords - the One True God.

Their testimony of belief - held up against the Jewish UNbelievers of Jesus' day - that lived their lives alongside Him and STILL didn't believe - was what condemned them (and maybe "put them to shame" is a better phrase?). In other words - it was a matter of who was right/who was wrong (who had greater faith because of their background of being non Jews from another culture).

It's not a literal passage. "Rise up" doesn't mean literally dead people coming from the ground. It's their historical testimony that "rose up". And "time of the dead" in Revelation 11 doesn't mean His final return (I don't believe).
Hello mkgal. Thanks for bringing up those verses.

Here are a few exegetical commentaries concerning the Greek used in Matt 12:41 [It is virtually identical with Luke 11:32.......

I will expound more about these in later posts........

Precisely similar is the use of ἐγερθήσεται below (comp. Matthew 11:11, Matthew 24:11). Others (Augustine, Beza, Elsner, Fritzsche) interpret: in vitam redibunt. This is flat and insipid, and inconsistent with ἐν τῇ κρίσει.

μετά] with, not: against. Both parties are supposed to be standing alongside of each other, or opposite each other, in the judgment.

κατακρ.] by their conduct, ὅτι μετενόησαν, etc. “Ex ipsorum comparatione isti merito damnabuntur,” Augustine. Comp. Romans 2:27.

ὧδε] like Matthew 12:6, refers to the person of Jesus, which is a grander phenomenon than Jonah. For πλεῖον, comp. Matthew 12:6.

βασίλισσα νότου] a queen from the South, i.e. from Sheba in Southern Arabia, 1 Kings 10:1 ff.; 2 Chronicles 9:1 ff.

Matthew 12:41
. pplication of the reference in Matthew 12:39. The men of Nineveh are cited in condemnation of the Jewish contemporaries of Jesus. Cf. similar use of historic parallels in Matthew 11:20-24.—πλεῖον Ἰωνᾶ, more than Jonah, cf. Matthew 12:6; refers either to Jesus personally as compared with Jonah, or to His ministry as compared with Jonah’s. In the latter case the meaning is: there is far more in what is now going on around you to shut you up to repentance than in anything Jonah said to the men of Nineveh (so Grotius).

41. in judgment with] More exactly, stand up in the judgment, i. e. in the day of judgment, beside. When on the day of judgment the Ninevites stand side by side with the men of that generation, they will by their penitence condemn the impenitent Jews.

Pulpit Commentary

Verse 41. - Verbally identical with Luke 11:32. [The] men of Nineveh (ἄνδρες Νινευῖται). No article, because the evangelist desired to call attention to the character of the Ninevites. The men of Nineveh, heathen though they were, shall do this. Ἄνδρες (not ἄνθρωποι); hardly because of the approaching mention of a woman (cf. Luke 11:31), but because the men in the city would naturally take the lead, and not the women. So also in the LXX. of Jonah 3:5 (contrast ver. 7, of the population generally). Shall rise in judgment; shall stand up in the judgment (Revised Version); i.e. shall stand up as witnesses (Job 16:8; Mark 14:57) in the final judgment (Luke 10:14). With this generation; i.e. present before the judgment-seat with them, for what purpose is shown by the following words (cf. Winer, § 47, h). And shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas (Jonah 3:5, sqq.). Observe that this was without miracles or signs being wrought. At (εἰς). Marking the direction of their faith (Romans 4:20). And, behold, a greater than - "Gr. more than" (Revised Version margin) - Jonas is here (ver 6, note).

Something I notice is this theme:
one greater than Jonah is here
one greater than Solomon is here
one greater than the Temple is here

For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation.

I believe this is the point being made in Matthew 12 & Luke 11:

"Foreign rulers had recognized God’s sovereign reign in Israel. Was it too much to ask that God’s own people would recognize the one God had appointed to restore His reign on earth in their generation?" ~ Jesus’ most overt kingship claim (Matthew 12:42)

N. T. Wright, Jesus and the Victory of God, (London: SPCK, 1996), 535:

"To claim that Jesus is greater than him [Solomon] is to claim that he is the true Messiah; that he will build the eschatological Temple; that through him the Davidic kingdom will be restored. The context also suggests that this Messiah will be the one to whom the nations will come and bow in obedience: through his kingdom the prophecies of messianic worldwide restoration will be fulfilled."

How is that related to those from Nineveh, and the Queen of the South, if it is not about the future judgment?

Mat 12:41 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.
Mat 12:42 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.
When you say "How is *that* related to those from Nineveh and the Queen of the South" I am guessing you mean "how is the Day of Vengeance related to those from Nineveh and the Queen of the South".....right?

ISTM that you are coming at this passage with a presumed idea that it's about a resurrection of the men of Nineveh and of the Queen of Sheba. I don't believe that's what's meant by the phrase "rise up in judgement" (as I've posted repeatedly). I believe it's the *testimonies* of the Queen of Sheba and the men of Nineveh (and the prophets and saints that were all murdered proclaiming that Jesus was the expected and longed for Messiah) that condemned the unbelievers of Jesus' day (because He is "greater than Solomon....greater than Jonah.....and greater than a Temple" He was God incarnate that lived and breathed and taught alongside them).

Jesus had said all throughout His teaching that certain things would fall on His generation specifically.

Matthew 23:34-36 ~
Because of this, I am sending you prophets and wise men and teachers. Some of them you will kill and crucify, and others you will flog in your synagogues and persecute in town after town. And so
upon you will come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah son of Berekiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation.

.....this had been predicted long before Jesus stated this. It's written about the blood of the martyrs:

Deuteronomy 32:5 ~ They have corrupted themselves; They are not His children, because of their blemish: a perverse and crooked generation”

Deuteronomy 32:20 ~ He said: "I will hide My face from them; I will see what will become of them, for they are a perverse generation- unfaithful children.

Deut 32:28-29 ~“For they are a nation void of counsel, nor is there any understanding in them. Oh, that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end!

Deut 32:43 ~ “Rejoice, O Gentiles, with His people; For He will avenge the blood of His servants, and render vengeance to His adversaries; He will provide atonement for His land and His people

Matthew 17:17 ~ Then Jesus answered and said, “O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Bring him here to Me

Philippians 2:14-15 ~ Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world

Jesus' words make it clear to me *which* generation He was speaking about that would suffer the blood of all the previous righteous saints was the very generation that He was ministering to.

It wasn't just Jesus that was warning those in disbelief. Even after Jesus had been crucified, resurrected, and ascended into heaven, Paul was also warning of the impending destruction (and God was gracious to offer that time for repentance) and was encouraging those enduring persecution that they would soon experience relief from their suffering. Around 52-54 A.D. St. Paul wrote:

1 Thess 2:14-16 ~ For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Judeans, who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they do not please God and are contrary to all men, forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved, so as always to fill up the measure of their sins; but wrath has come upon them to the uttermost
2 Thess 1:4-8 ~ “…[We] ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure, which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer; since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ
