9 - Health care: About seven-in-ten Americans (69%) said reducing health care costs should be a top priority for the president and Congress this year. This reflects an 8-percentage-point increase from 2011, though is little changed from last year. Majorities in both parties placed priority on health care, though a larger share of Democrats (77%) than Republicans (59%) cited health care costs as a top priority. In the post-midterm survey, Democrats in Congress had a 23-point advantage over Trump in the public’s assessments of who’d have the better approach to health care (51% vs. 28%).

You can't focus on your own health if you can't afford it.

Mental Health Awareness Day was earlier this week & got a lot of attn. People care. I'm not surprised by the Pew Research - from back in Feb bc it was more focused on broader issues. Doesn't mean Americans don't care about stuff not listed.

Greetings,

Perhaps they didn’t make the list because they aren’t a concern for the respondents. I’m doing well in all three and wouldn’t have referenced them either.

~Bella

I'm not terribly concerned about any of them personally. I think the most important problems anyone faces are those in their own lives. Regarding the list of problems in the article I just shake my head. We have much bigger problems facing us; the underlying causes of those listed.

Health care costs are high because people don't focus on their health.

The term healthcare is the antithesis of health. You only seek healthcare when you are sick. Sick people aren't healthy. Therefore "healthcare" is a misnomer. Doctors don't return us to health but to that grey area between healthy and sick.

Caring about a problem and doing something about it are not the same.

Some are unhealthy because they lost the genetic lottery. Some are unhealthy because they got into an accident or met the wrong people in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some are born into abusive households that leave them battered, malnourished, and/or mentally unbalanced. Some cannot afford the basics such as nutritious food, clean water, and proper education because of circumstances beyond their control. Maybe the only jobs available are the dirty jobs rife with pollution.

Not everyone is born with the same cards in life.

They have a duty to themselves and to the country to overcome these problems.

Meanwhile there are people who have worked a heck of a lot harder than you for much less things than you possess because they face challenges you will likely never have to face in your entire life.

Empathy can go a long way in the Christian life.

I wouldn't give everyone a pass because of the few. Tough love has it's place.

Say what you wish. I'm thankful I have Canadian healthcare where I don't have to bankrupt myself for being born with a disability through no fault of my own. Once I find a job, I will gladly pay taxes so others can receive the same blessing God has given me through no merit of my own.

I have always worked and paid taxes. Am I to be criticized for that?

Also you may be projecting your personal trials onto those who are well able to take better care of themselves.

People can't afford to focus on their health because healthcare costs are too high.

That makes no more sense than driving way too fast to get to a gas station before you run out of gas.

No, it makes as much sense as the gas station simply being squarely out of range.
