Yes it's very close, her Geneva is 1599.
At the beginning the King James was supposed to water down the very Protestant elements of the Geneva, although now the thoroughgoing Protestants who stick very close to Scripture tend to use the King James.

Lol. A very determined woman there!
She has conviction and the simplest faith of anyone I've ever known. But it's taken me 45 years of marriage to figure out, or I should say to understand, how strong that simple conviction is and simple faith is. You gotta love it ( and her) for that, there is absolutely no complication.

It's wonderful that you were able to figure that out, even if it took 45 years of marriage. Better late than never!

This is more where I fall into the scheme of things to be honest on a daily basis. In school, I didn't do much in the way of studying or note taking. I relied on memory to get me through testing and such. It worked well for me that way.

When it comes to the Bible I am the same way. I am more of a daily reader and devotion kinda guy. I actually get more out of the Bible that way then I do studying it or taking notes. I have tried many times and just got frustrated because I wasn't getting anything out of it.

In that case I would recommend a RSV or ESV Bible. They are both solid choices and easy to read. If you get the RSV-CE (Catholic Edition) it will include the Apocrypha as well. One of my daily choices is the RSV, and that is what they use in my ELCA (Liturgical) Lutheran church for readings.

Believe it or not I have the newest Lutheran Study Bible along with the Apocrypha Lutheran Edition with Notes that was given to me a long time ago by a friend. It is definitely more of a home type book with how heavy it is, but what I have learned about it is that it is more for the more conservative type reader, and while I am both, I do lean more liberal.

Does the ESV have more of a conservative lean?

That is a good choice in study Bible, it will lean more conservative as I believe that is the one by Concordia Press, which is affiliated with the LCMS Lutheran Church, which is more conservative than ELCA or TEC. The ESV in general is not necessarily more conservative, but perhaps in some areas it is. I tend to use the RSV since my church uses it too, that way I can be on the same "page" for the readings they are doing that Sunday. But I also frequently reference the KJV, Artscroll, and ESV for reference.

We had/have a thread on this in the Lutheran Forum, it was more about the EHV but also talks about the rest. Feel encouraged to chime in or start a new thread there if you want to learn more.

Thank you! I'm not sure there is much more that I could add to that thread.

I am curious and I didn't know where to put this at within the mass of forums here.

Do all liturgical type churches read from the apocrypha/deuterocanonical books?

Having read a Catholic bible all these years, I am kinda overwhelmed by all the different versions of the bible. I have read a little from the NIV, I believe it is the 1984 version (was a while ago and can no longer find any copies of it), as well as a NKJV and the NRSV. I don't particularly have a favorite though and only one of those comes with any of the Apocryphal books.

I guess what I am trying to figure out is, if I am joining a liturgical church, do they put much emphasis on the apocrypha/deuterocanonical books or is reading a sixty-six book bible alright as well? If they are, I'm not sure which to choose.

Not a fan of the KJV. I didn't do well when it came to Shakespeare and the language of the KJV reminds me very much of that!

I'm the early years of the Reformation, the Apocrypha was still in most bibles, east, and west.

Martin Luther in some of his writings quoted verses from these books, they still appear in some German Bibles.

As far as my denomination (LCMS) I have never seen/heard them as part of worship, and both study bibles produced by our publishing source (Concordia) do not have these books. Concordia has produced a study version of the Apocrypha though.

We do not consider the Apocrypha as inspired, but many encourage the reading of the Apocrypha since it does contain good things to read.

I have however heard the Apocrypha read in the Episcopal Church, on one, or, two occasions.

The Orthodox fully accept these books as part of the cannon.

A Catholic friend of mine once told me the Apocrypha was considered inspired, but not as inspired as the other 66 Books...?

I believe the Reformed completely disregard them.

If you read the 39 Articles, the Anglican view is close to the Lutheran, but I think they are a little
more highly regarded.

The Oriental Orthodox I believe accept them to some degree, I also believe they have a few additional books in there cannon, particularly in Ethiopia.

Hope that helps.

There is a vote for any mainstream translation for casual reading and devotions.

What do most of you prefer?
I prefer the ESV though the NASB is also a solid choice. There really isn’t a lot of difference between the two. Also if you want read and study the Apocrypha there is an ESV edition from Concordia Publishing House.

Good question. Mine does, not a lot though I do not know about the rest. In Mass we use the NKJV but I like the GNT and the action bible. The Traditional forum here would be a great place for this type of question Traditional Theology

Every Bible on Earth between the 4th Century (when the bishops of the Catholic Church first compiled the Bible under the guidance of the Holy Spirit) and the 15th Century (when Martin Luther removed 7 books that contained truths He wanted to reject) included the original and complete 73 books. "Deuterocanonical" is a term he invented in an attempt to legitimize his destruction of God's Word. In fact, all 73 books are canonical, since they are all included in the original and complete biblical canon. Luther fully intended to trash 3 New Testament books as well, but his followers were near the point of rebellion over trashing the writings of the Apostles, so he had to back down on that part of his plan. If he had his way, Protestants today would have an incomplete Bible of 63 books instead of the incomplete Bible of 66 books they do have, and would be calling 10 books of God's Holy Word "deuterocanonical".

Ok, so, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Assyrian Church of the East Christians all have a larger canon than Protestants.

Our Bibles have anywhere from 73 books (Catholic and EO) to 81 (Ethiopian Orthodox), and none of us would consider those books to be deuterocanonical, but rather, canonical. As they are parts of our canons. I think the Armenian Orthodox even have a book called 3 Corinthians! That's pretty neat.

Do you have any more information on this? I've never heard of it, and it's not listed in the list in Fr. Vazken Movsesian's "The Bible and the Armenian Church" (see the list on the last page in a pdf here). But I don't know very much about the Armenian Apostolic Church.

What do most of you prefer?

On the whole, I prefer the NRSV. That is available in a compact version which includes the apocrypha (which is the Bible I have that can go anywhere in my bag etc).
