Just what did Venezuela do???

Why do we have crippling sanctions on Venezuela?

Here is how it looks from where I sit. When it was realized that Venezuela has huge reserves of oil and minerals, including gold, the energy and mining companies tried to strong arm the Venezuelan government into bad deals. When that didn't work they sent their lobby mobs out.

Now predictably this sent Venezuelans right into the arms of Russia and China. We get what we sow..

Venezuela through Citgo used to supply cut rate heating oil to help with our low income heating assistance programs.. Like the Kurds we stiff our friends and will pay long term for it.

Venezuela has two problems.

Corrupt politicians.
Extreme socialism in action.

This happened after our energy midgets tried strong arming them and virtual attempted theft of their resources. That makes capitalism so appealing, heh?

It actually happened because of socialism giving everything away from free and their politicians robbing the rest.

US doesn't need their resources.

A common joke in some parts of the internet is that the USA is the only country where socialism might work because it's the only country the USA can't sanction for turning socialist.

I would much rather have a socialist friend than an enemy.. Who cares if Venezuela has chosen socialism through free and fair election. It is frankly none of our business..

unfortunately the evil we do is magnified way above any good.

we should have laws on corporate behavour overseas..not reward lobby mobs on sanctions for them

my memories of presidents go back to Dwight..this is the 1st time I was ever embarrassed to let a foreigner know I am American

I'd say the poverty and authoritarianism in Venezuela today, brought on by socialists, makes capitalism appealing.

I would agree that used to be the case...it is just making more poor now..
China is actually doing better at helping their less fortunate.

The sanctions were imposed because the tyrannical dictator Maduro refused to abdicate after the 2018 election. Most countries recognize Juan Guaido as the legitimate president.

That's not a trivial matter. It justified the crippling sanctions.
