The Bible has a lot to say regarding our control of our tongues.

I do not have all of the scriptures handy but,
I looked them up a while back (plenty).

Self control -- seems to be lacking at times.
(one of the fruit's of the spirit).

If anyone has more than 90%
or less than 40%
please leave comment.
All others also invited.

Greetings,

I employ silence as a control mechanism. It is very useful. Most things don’t warrant a response and untoward words should be repressed. Writing and mental distractions are equally good. When all else fails the consequence of its utterance can nip things in the bud.

I have more than 90% because I am naturally introverted and prone to think before I speak.....(not the same as typing and hitting submit which I sometimes do without thinking)

a few good verses to ponder would be these:

"Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."

"And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Most people react to words read and spoken because they arent in control of their own emotions and thoughts.....and therefore allow them to be controlled by what they hear and see.

This is something that I've made an attempt to change...... To view equally good words towards me, the same as the bad... Feeling and reacting the way I desire to, and not the way others desire or intend for me to. The end will be peace that no one understands.......a smile when crying is expected, joy, when hurt and pain is expected. silence when verbal altercation is expected...

less than 40% :/
I swear a lot (at home)
that's how I communicate with my siblings
there's always a swear word at the end of my sentences when I talk to them.

I'm working on it
I believe he is thinking more along the lines of verbal aggression......not using a better choice of words.

oh is this the verse about professing hate and love (for God) with the same tongue?

still, I do lack in self-control in terms of behavior and speech

You're avatar should be a motivator?
I know, I'm also working on it daily.

Anything said that is not edifying.

M

Hard words are often badly needed, though the hearer may disagree. Yet, a loose tongue always thinks its hard words are needed, when it would best keep silent. There's a judgement call to be made, here. I put myself at over 90%, because I consider that much of what I say to be very deliberate. I know that thinking things through before saying them requires a lot of time, after which it's usually too late to say it, but I try to process my thoughts in a hurry, and I'm open to saving an idea for the next time the conversation comes up (at which point the words come quickly, because they're already decided).

However, there are many who hear me who might think that 90% is way too high. I don't blurt expletives. I mean exactly what I say, and while I may temper my thoughts, I don't believe in completely neutering them.

This is an absolute requirement for ministry imo.

Note, that controlling the tongue is most often thought of as not saying something you'll regret... and rightfully so. But it can also sometimes be: being willing to say the hard thing even when you don't want to (always in love of course)

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof." Pro 18:21

"I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment" Matt 12:35. ----Jesus said

"You can be sure of this: when the day of judgment comes, everyone will be held accountable for every careless word he has spoken." TPT

Did a study too. These 2 Scriptures really got to me.

Read this today

"Do everything without murmuring or questioning [the providence of God],"Philippians 2:14

"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart." Heb 4:12

Miuntainbob, wondering if you have been prompted speaking this for the new year beginning at the Jewish New Year in particular?
