A contingent of U.S. Special Forces was caught up in Turkish shelling against U.S.-backed Kurdish positions in northern Syria, days after President Donald Trump told his Turkish counterpart he would withdraw U.S. troops from certain positions in the area. A senior Pentagon official said shelling by the Turkish forces was so heavy that the U.S. personnel considered firing back in self-defense.

Exclusive: Turkey attacks US special forces in Syria, apparently by mistake

Nothing to see here..

Anti-impeachment strategy.
I believe it was a campaign promise....getting out of ME wars.....though I believe it to be a big mistake to abandon the Kurds....if indeed they get abandoned.

....what happens when a man, with no working knowledge of the region, makes a ""gut" decision without consulting those who could have warned him of the consequences. From what I understand, the decision was a surprise to our military and other countries in the region such as Israel.

Trump's methods are scary. Obviously, he should consult the military, the intelligence community and allies. Considering that Trump's allies are Turkey and Russia, perhaps that isn't a good idea.

That being said, do we believe that we
1) should we continue supporting Iraq with troops?
2) should we continue supporting the Kabul government with troops?
3) should be side with the Kurds in their war with Turkey?

DISCUSSION
1) I think that it is time to evacuate all our troops from Iraq. Yes, that would mean more influence for Iran. Also, ISIS might rise some in the rural areas. However, enough is enough with regard to US intervention.

2) The Talliban controls much of the country, as does Kabul. We have no reason to continue being in the middle. It is time to evacuate. And yes, this amounts to validating the partition of the country that is the reality on the ground.

3) Personally, I think that the Kurds are worth fighting for. They are allies who have fought at our side for decades. However, the voters are not ready to support another war, so we should evacuate here also. And yes, this means that there will be a resurgence of ISIS in Syria. It is not at all clear whether ISIS is worse than Assad in many areas of Syria. In any case, we need to go.

I am eagerly awaiting our soon to be glorious and victorious wars with Turkey, Iran, North Kores, China, and Russia.

They're all secretly warring with each other after Trump called the Egyptian president his favourite dictator.

I agree our conventional military forces should be withdrawn Iraq and Afghanistan (and Saudi Arabia - where more US troops were sent today...sigh).

In Syria, I understand the US presence is very light - mostly Special Forces there to advise the Kurdish fighters in their fight against ISIS....that is until Trump's decision. I don't see Turkey stopping regardless of the economic threats from D.C. And what happens from here is anyone's guess...the probability of more troops being sent to prevent further escalations in the region just went up considerably, thanks to the President's ill advised decision.

The way the media explains its, yeah, that's a pretty accurate description. Like most media reports though, I believe they are only pointing out what they want and not the entire story....I will with hold judgement for the moment though I disagree with his decision....there may be more than meets the eye.

Now wait a second, it can't be both....

Not sure if you’re serious....but yes it can. ‘Ill advised’ just simply means ‘unwise’...and Trump wrote the book on that...

"....U.S. personnel considered firing back in self-defense."

Too bad they didn't; Turkey is no friend of ours......

Donald says otherwise.

Fair enough. Eventually we'll see who else was consulted.

The shelling by the turks is hardly an act of friendship...

Top Kurdish general to US diplomats.. “You are leaving us to be slaughtered”

(CNN)The commander of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces told a senior US diplomat, "You are leaving us to be slaughtered," demanding to know whether the US is going to do anything to protect Syrian Kurds as Turkey continues its military operation targeting America's Kurdish allies in Syria.

"You have given up on us. You are leaving us to be slaughtered," Gen. Mazloum Kobani Abdi told the Deputy Special Envoy to the Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS, William Roebuck, in a meeting Thursday, according to an internal US government readout that has been obtained exclusively by CNN.

"You are not willing to protect the people, but you do not want another force to come and protect us. You have sold us. This is immoral," Mazloum added.

He insisted the US either help stop the Turkish attack or allow the Syrian Democratic Forces to strike a deal with the Assad regime in Damascus and their Russian backers, allowing Russian warplanes to enforce a no-fly zone over northeast Syria, thereby denying Turkey the ability to carry out airstrikes.

"I need to know if you are capable of protecting my people, of stopping these bombs falling on us or not. I need to know, because if you're not, I need to make a deal with Russia and the regime now and invite their planes to protect this region," Mazloum said.
