Providing health insurance to illegal immigrants could cost up to $23 billion a year, study finds

But with the campaign definitely not over, and a number of frontrunners now backing the policy, more attention is turning to how much it could cost to give millions of illegal immigrants health insurance. On Thursday, the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS), a policy group that advocates for lower levels of immigration overall, published a study finding that the cost could be up to $23 billion a year.

While candidates have not necessarily gone into detail about their plans, CIS cites an Atlanticsurvey that found that Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., Kamala Harris, D-Calif., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.; and former Housing Secretary Julian Castro would all provide “full benefits” to those in the country illegally.

I'm betting the proponents of Open Borders will find that quite reasonable since you only have to print the money to fund it.

Of course there wouldn't be so many of ICE would get off their butts and round them up and send them back where they came from.

amd back then people were more active and did not have the same diet either. Neither of those things has a thing to do with how much it COSTS to see a doctor.

Medical benefits? Why don't they just have the good grace to die without bothering us?

If they are illegally here we owe them nothing.

No, and I'm pretty old.
and people were healthier then !
Or dead. Many diseases weren't curable or treatable back in the good ole days are now, but it costs money.

Which scripture supports that concept? Is that what that whole "Good Samaritan" parable was about?

Right, they should just die gracefully and hopefully out of sight.
Are you suggesting instead that we treat everyone in this world?

We have borders for a REASON the Bible too supported the idea of borders if you come here unlawfully you need to leave. That is not the same thing as letting someone who is here die in pain. If someone has a life threatening issue treat them and send them back. I am not saying a find someone on the street know they are illegal so I just let them bleed out.

Really? What reasons are those, exactly? Once again, scriptural support please!

the Bible too supported the idea of borders if you come here unlawfully you need to leave.

So you'll have no problem providing said support in the form of scripture then, amirite?

Right, send them back to their own country to die in pain/bleed out.

And people wonder why I am not a Christian

...except for the low cost labor provided to US employers with zero healthcare cost (to employers). We all benefited in one way or another. Just ask Mr Trump what great employees they make.

US spends about 3.5 trillion dollars on health care, so 23 billion is 0.6%

I assume there are very, very, very few people in USA that support Open Borders.

There seems to be a large amount of USA folk that would be fine with sick people with treatable illnesses to die outside the hospital walls.

But I reckon it would make more sense to address immigration and illegal crossings rather than to cut off medical treatment for sick people.
People in prison get medical treatment don't they?

Some USA folk are just downright ruthless.

...so, when the average life expectancy was roughly 12 years lower than what it is now and over 45% of the population were smokers?

But, in regards to the original post, $23 billion doesn't sound so bad considering the illegal immigrant estimates are around 11 million people. That's roughly $2k per year, per person.

To put that in perspective, for my private pay policy through my employer, I pay $2700/year, plus I still have co-pays and deductables to meet. I thought government healthcare plans were supposed to be more costly than privatized health insurance??? I'd gladly pay the extra $50 per paycheck in income taxes for single-payer negotiated healthcare if it meant getting that $110 per paycheck deduction off of there for health insurance.

Also, another point of reference, $23 billion is approximately 1/27th of what we spend on the military. I'd much rather have tax money going toward giving healthcare to people rather than using it to blow people up and meddle in foreign affairs 6,000 miles away.
